Resin Casting?, by maumau93 on Nov 30, 2011 16:07:23 GMT 1, and the answer seems to be. "Unfortunately a waffle, being organic, would not work in our process so unable to assist" or "Sorry, this would probably burn dark brown or black in process." cheers for all the help but i guess it aint guna be possible, im sure it could be done by maybe putting a coating around it first but i guess they aren't prepared to waste allot of time trying stuff...

Resin Casting?, by des77 on Nov 30, 2011 17:36:07 GMT 1, It would be easy enough to try yourself. From personal experience you need to make 5-6 strengths of resin . Applied thickest first. A pva/water mix should preserve foods. Although you would obviously do test runs first.

yeh i just ment i would like it to have the ilusion of floating e.g. not touching the side on the resin cube it is in. like them old paper weights you used to get with advertising inside but i want a waffle instead

Resin Casting?, by speebe on Nov 30, 2011 19:04:27 GMT 1, A lot depends on the size and depth of the waffle itself but basic the mold does need to be made of an object the approximate size of the waffle, allowing about 10-20mm excess on all sides.
You'll need:
An initial form to cast from eg mdf/acrylic
Silicone mold of the form - approx 2kg
Clear casting resin & catalyst - approx 3kg
Resin will need to be cast in at least 4 layers to avoid overheating as it cures...
Once cast, it'll need to be cut, polished etc...
I'd estimate that it'd use about £65-£85 worth of materials without labour costs and there is a possibility that any air or moisture inside the waffle could result in gases being released, cracking the resin cast over time. That being said it had crossed my mind to try and pick one up on the Sat if they were still making waffles and having a go myself.

You apply layers of resin at different consistencies.....this is how you get the 'floatin' look.
When really it is sitting on a thicker layer of resin.

The sponge of the waffle would soak it up well, but it would look very glossy when set, although I think that the water in the PVA would turn the waffle to mush.
Other options might be to dip the waffle in clear casting resin and raise the waffle while that sets to preserve it.
If you had a deep enough tupperware/polyurethane container you save money and time by casting the resin directly inside, pouring in layers. I'd lay the waffle in there on the second layer/third layer.
The cast can then be removed once the final layer has set... job done but it will take the form of the container.

Resin Casting?, by des77 on Nov 30, 2011 19:25:55 GMT 1, how long would that preserve it for des?
I wouldnt say itd be archival :-) but longer than in pack i guess. Also if u ever went to a crap museum as a kid, the food on display is usually real food varnished to preserve it.
