Politics, by kunstrasen on Dec 9, 2011 11:26:51 GMT 1, Following the events around the Euro crisis and especially the behaviour of the Current German government under Angela Merkel I'm a bit worried and really would like to have some input on how it is seen abroad by other forum members.
Over here it seems like she is more interested in taking control rather than finding solutions, probably down to the nearing elections and her big loss of support in the past due to ever changing opinions really always down to whatever seems to suite to the majority of electors. A lot of people over here really see that she is a radical without a concept but in desperate need to increase here power but on the other hand she's got parts of the media behind her and there is again a growing number of people who would vote for here again also due to a lack of alternatives. The political landscape is highly retarded these day over here, mainly without concepts but instead all actions down to the political campaign to win the next election. I'm very worried that the perception of this abroad puts a bad light on Germany and even more worried that the results of this sort of 'politics' will have terrifying results on the future of the political landscape worldwide.
How is the perception of the current German government abroad? What importance is being put on current event? Please give some feedback if you can!

The U.S. media seems to harp on the financial and political instability of Greece & Italy the most. The German chancellor and the French President are perceived by the media as strong leaders that the European Union takes guidance from. They mainstream media always seems to insinuate that the British want nothing to do with the EU.

Politics, by balibob on Dec 9, 2011 15:22:58 GMT 1, The perception in the UK varies depending which news source you read/watch. Germany & France are seen in the main to be trying to ensure most of Europe dance to their collective tunes in return for using their county's taxes to TRY and stabilise the single currency and bail out the county's most likely to crash. Fair enough is my view because if we were doing it I'm sure we'd do the same, but what is getting a lot of press now is that Germany/France are trying to drag the UK even further into the bail out package for a currency we didn't sign up for in the first place.
The Right and middle press say Germany and France are trying to bully the UK, the left are saying agree with everything just to stay in the EU.
The truth of the matter is when/if we hold a referendum on our continuing membership of the EU, the overwelming answer will be 'adios' Europe, then fcuk knows what will happen.

Very reluctant to stereotype the Germans and French, keen to push an agenda of a united europe and Britain marginalising itself.
des77 thanks for Iceland article, illuminating.

Politics, by johnnyh on Dec 12, 2011 14:15:33 GMT 1, What people do not realize is that this is a very strong political move for Germany especially followed by France to control Europe. The big problem here is the bond market and they are mantaining the same status. The only countries in the really forseable future who will be able to borrow money will be Germany and France. The lender of last resort is European Central Bank ... Who controls followed by the IMF got to be a player there or do big political deals. Why are bonds important??
When a country needs more finance it borrows in the form of bonds. If it cannot pay them back it prints more money. This can and always does cause currency devaluation. However currency devaluation is good for exports and printing more money etc gets over the bad time.
However with the euro you cannot print more money therefore to lend the interest rate goes up and you have what is happening to Italy etc they must pay really high rates to lend money. Germany would struggle to pay these rates. Germany lends at about 0.6% these troubled countries are being charged upto 7% in the crisis.
Because they do not control the currency they are f#€ked to use that old economic expression.
Germany and France do not want to change the system so to do anything these countries will have to do political deals to go forward. Which basically means any power deals that Germany and France want will be supported or you cannot have any money. That's not to say they weren't pretty stupid in the first place. Of the two Germany has a massive advantage over France so as David Bowie once said "I will be king and you, you will be my Queen"
Centralized Europe is likely to be a done deal over the next few years. These countries must do what their told or we will not give you any money !!!!!
