Frames, by Neate Michael on Dec 15, 2011 10:44:07 GMT 1, A bug bear of mine (and I am sure many others) is how f**king expensive it is to frame prints....
Take this Mau Mau print... 53 x 43 cm... It does not fit into any cheap Ikea frames unless you want a huge border...
The print itself has a huge white border. And then you would have another big border (the mount, which would be approx 10cm wide). It would look s**t.
I am well f**king tempted to trim 3 cm's off it, and then it will fit very nicely into a 50cm x 40cm frame (not got it yet, but from the picture there seems to be a lot of white space on the print).
Same with this Tilt print I just bought. That will cost more than the actual print if I take it to a framers. Especially as I live in Swedenland, where nothing is cheap... So alas I cannot even use Mr Frameman.
I once asked Grafter to do his Eskimo child on a piece of paper the size of an Ikea Frame. He did too... Very nice guy. I just wish more prints were on standard size papers. It would make it easier and cheaper to get the art on the wall, which is where it belongs!

Frames, by klyde on Dec 15, 2011 11:31:32 GMT 1, I hate artists that bring out prints sized 71 x 51 for example.
Just make the damn thing 70x50 so it dosent need a custom frame job.
Ikea have some new white moulded ones that look pretty good.
That said, if its a piece that you love and are planning on keeping, get it done right.

How will it ruin your print over time?
As long as its not in direct sunlight or over a fire it will be fine.

mounts are not acid free so it will discolour the paper.

Don't get me wrong, I have an Adam Neate, a few Bankys, and others in custom frames, that probably cost somewhere between £150 and £200. Those prints hang in the living room in the pride of place.
But what I am on about is the cheap prints (your Mau Mau's, your grafters) prints that you just like, and you know will not appreciate hugely. You bought them cos you like them, not because you think it will make you a millionaire.
Those prints, I hate the thought of spending more on the frame than the print.
The first Mighty Mo print from POW was 50cm x 50cm and sits great in an Ikea frame. It is in my son's bedroom on the wall. Looks ace...
Anyway, it is just a personal opinion, but if more prints were standard size, I think there would be more art on walls instead of in big folders.

Hej Martin... Want to buy some butter? I will swap you some for one of your Erika Badu images that I was loving a few years ago...
If booze is cheap in Swedenland compared to Norway, I dread to think how expensive it is... A (not quite) a pint here costs about £7 and that is in normal bars...

Frames, by klyde on Dec 15, 2011 12:12:22 GMT 1, I have 3 ikea frames up. No of which use the mounts provided so I'm not concerned. None have serious value anyway. (2 invaders and 1 bast, all unsigned). Been up for years now.
If its an awkward size (and generally costs over £80) I get a custom frame made at my local framers. I never buy anything unless I plan to hang it.
I think Londoners get completely ripped off with framing. Definitely way cheaper in Scotland.
Going to post a pic later of my latest Micallef I had framed last week. £140 all in. The same in John Jones would probably cost £500 or something insane.

Frames, by curiousgeorge on Dec 15, 2011 17:48:55 GMT 1, With respect John Jones really is a cut above the rest (no diss to any framers here) You simply get what you pay for, to say it's the exactly the same without knowing the exact materials and methods used is not correct.
I hated it so much I taught myself and became so anal about it all.Now i simple justify costs by the years of enjoyment I will get from said print/frame
If all else fails smuggle butter into Norway to pay for framing

Frames, by iamzero on Dec 15, 2011 20:22:01 GMT 1, I've decided to frame my own stuff. Sourced the UV glass supplier, sourced acid free matt board, sourced conservation tape and frame mouldings. Gonna be much cheaper as I already own a Bosch chopsaw for kitchen pelmet mitring.
Game on. Ask the right questions to the right people and they're are usually pretty helpful. Apart from some knobhead that runs a UK framing forum.

Frames, by I like pictures on Dec 16, 2011 11:03:29 GMT 1, Ive used the same framers for all my framing jobs and now get a good discount. Just had to suck up the full prices to start with but now they're much more reasonable.

Frames, by m00man on Dec 16, 2011 13:16:30 GMT 1, buy the frames premade. then buy the glass (cut to size) and mount/backboard from a framing supplier. then get your local framer to cut the mount boards to size for ya. Costs me about £60 to do a 24"x36" poster with 3mm UV Glass and acid free everything. Biggest cost is the moulding at about £30-40. Glass and board is dirty cheap.
