Mark Jenkins ๐บ๐ธ Sculpture โข Street Installation, by mmmike on Jan 9, 2012 22:54:40 GMT 1, I bought the hands and IMO they are great. Much nicer in person. That opinion won't change even if he issues 100 colour variations. I can't comment on the head but I think the hands were very well priced. If you see them in person you will see it is a bit more than just a bunch of tape.
I don't think it is a good idea to buy something just because of the edition size. I think artists do variations on pieces all the time.

Mark Jenkins ๐บ๐ธ Sculpture โข Street Installation, by mace on Jan 9, 2012 23:33:08 GMT 1, So much for my original edition of 7.....
Then he should say it upfront so that people can make up their mind.
Reminds me of Grafter doing a white Splash, then blue Splash, red Splash, Splash tryptich, Splash canvases etc. He got a pretty bad beating here for this move.

The difference with the babies is that the tape versions are unlimited, and resin versions are small editions.

Well said. Apologies to anyone who is upset by the release of "Black Head" Mark and I both feel it is a different edition and we aren't trying to be greedy or shady by this offering this.

LOL?
Maybe I should have clarified. Mark isn't making a huge sum of money from his yearly release on this forum. Mark looks at this an opportunity to offer his fans a chance to purchase his work at a VERY reasonable price. Most of his gallery works are larger pieces that can cost $4000-12,000 USD and can be expensive to ship.
I'm really surprised that people are complaining when we are offering editions of 20 or less for less than $500 USD.
In the future, I will make note on all our sales that the artist reserves to right to release additional colorways of any editions he makes.
Best,
Chad

I can't believe all the crying going on here. These were very affordable. What do you expect for a few hundred dollars? If you are really upset about this second edition you really should not buy art.
I hope the complaining isn't going to wreck it for those of us who appreciate the work and the reasonable pricing.

Im not upset Mike, im LOLLING at the attempt to justify enlarging the edition by doing the same thing in another colour and calling it a separate run. Personally i wouldnt buy Marks works but i agree its cheap enough for those who would and like it.

Yes. It's a completely new edition. Not a second edition.
Completely different which doesn't make any sense. I could understand if he brought out another 7 black heads but this isn't the case...
Very confusing and strange.

I agree - I'm confused that the black head edition has become an issue around here. We're all pretty used to artists that we like and talk about, releasing editions of their work in different colorways. From Banksy to Eine to Hirst etc etc

Mark Jenkins ๐บ๐ธ Sculpture โข Street Installation, by Dr Bastard on Jan 11, 2012 15:09:49 GMT 1,
Gestalten is proud to present the first solo show in Germany by the renowned American artist Mark Jenkins, who uses ordinary packing tape to create life-size human or animal forms. Jenkins is best known for his clever installations of these startlingly lifelike tape sculptures in urban and natural spaces as well as indoor environments such as cafeterias, toilets, and art galleries. This expert staging of his work, especially his clothed human figures, provokes variousโoften strongโreactions from passersby and expands his interventions into powerful performances.
โGlazed Paradiseโ will feature new sculptures specifically conceived for this show and made by the artist in Berlin, which will be unveiled at the January 19th opening. These will be complemented by a limited edition of smaller tape sculptures. In addition to Mark Jenkinsโs sculptural work, โGlazed Paradiseโ will include photographs of select installations that reveal how compelling the interaction between his artwork and its environment can be.
To coincide with the show, Gestalten is releasing the artistโs first monograph The Urban Theater: Mark Jenkins. A limited number of signed copies will be available for purchase at Gestalten Space.
Please join us for the opening of โGlazed Paradiseโ on January 19, 2012 at 18:30 and donโt miss the opportunity to hear a talk by Mark Jenkins in which he will give personal insight into the origins of and creative process behind his tape sculptures.
Mark Jenkins, born in 1970, lives and works in Washington, DC. Although select work by the artist has been shown in renowned group exhibitions, including at the Moscow Biennial (2009) or Kunsthalle Wien (2010), and recently graced the stage of Berlinโs Hebbel am Ufer HAUEINS theater, Jenkinsโs art is primarily made for the street. For Jenkins, the interaction between his sculptures, their urban environments, and the people within them are an integral part of the lifecycle of his work and are needed to make it complete.

Mark Jenkins ๐บ๐ธ Sculpture โข Street Installation, by rperry on Jan 11, 2012 17:38:51 GMT 1, Different colorways are part of an edition. Period. Full stop.
I think I look at it from a different perspective. For many years, I have been purchasing works by artists mature in their careers, have a large secondary market track record, and most have catalogue raisonnes. If Mark is fortunate to make it to the level where has a CR, these heads will be listed as an overall edition of 12, with whatever AP's he made as well and gave to friends, etc.
Most of the artists talked about on this forum are very young in their careers and time will tell who makes it, but for those that do and extended the successful editions, the overall edition is watered down. It's a simple fact.
When I purchased it was 7, then a few weeks later it's 5 more. If they had not sold out quickly would he have bothered to make more? Did he make black hands? Did he make black figures?

No. Different colourways could well be considered to be part of a series, but the idea that different colourways are part of a edition is completely up to the artist.
The edition is whatever the artist numbers the artwork out of.
E.g. No Ball Games Green and Grey is a total of 500 prints, but are editions of 250 as this is what the artist decided to do.

It's a whole new colourway! Not another batch of black ones which would be out of order. New edition.
Don't see the problem.

Just to name a few... Banksy does it, Shep does it, Faile does it, KAWS does it, Koons, does it, Hirst does it, Warhol did it (electric chair prints - there are 250+50AP * 10 colours!. No one considers it an edition of 2,500 or 3,000 including his catalogue raisonnes).
I'm not sure which artists you are referring to?

Jenkins did not. He produced more weeks later as an afterthought.
other artists I'm referring to.. well all others (the ones with successful careers)

Mark Jenkins ๐บ๐ธ Sculpture โข Street Installation, by darhart on Jan 12, 2012 14:15:33 GMT 1, I've got the orginal clear tape head and set of hands to go with it and have no problem with another colour way, I see it as as separate edition. If he were to release another larger/cheaper edition I may be a bit dissapointed, but don't see this black one as a problem.

Mark Jenkins ๐บ๐ธ Sculpture โข Street Installation, by Dr Bastard on Jan 12, 2012 20:17:13 GMT 1, I've got the orginal clear tape head and set of hands to go with it and have no problem with another colour way, I see it as as separate edition. If he were to release another larger/cheaper edition I may be a bit dissapointed, but don't see this black one as a problem.
Our thoughts EXACTLY!! Thanks to you and the 95% of our customers who agree with this way of thinking.
