David Hockney vs Damien Hirst: the Queen's chosen one puts king of the YBAs on the spot
A day after his New Year honour, Yorkshire's finest attacks artist for failing to make his own work
A row is threatening to break out between two of Britain's most celebrated artists after David Hockney criticised Damien Hirst for the "insulting" use of assistants to create his works.
Hockney, whose new exhibition opens later this month, has taken a swing at his fellow artists, saying they should create their own work.

David Hockney vs Damien Hirst, by johnnyh on Jan 3, 2012 20:26:41 GMT 1, He is right though and everyone including Hirst etc know it but he is like Warhol and does not give a toss as he believes the concept is more important. Mmmmmmm I love Hirsts stuff though.

David Hockney vs Damien Hirst, by curiousgeorge on Jan 3, 2012 20:53:41 GMT 1, All good PR as per....
"Hirst said that he only painted five spot paintings himself because, "I couldn't be fucking arsed doing it"; he described his efforts as "shite"—"They're shit compared to ... the best person who ever painted spots for me was Rachel. She's brilliant. Absolutely fucking brilliant. The best spot painting you can have by me is one painted by Rachel."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damien_Hirst
Apples and oranges IMO

David Hockney vs Damien Hirst, by Brushstrokes 75 on Jan 6, 2012 12:11:30 GMT 1, The thing is there is a huge difference between having assistant helping you with you works (especially the large sized one) and having assistants doing your work for you....
The article gives example that are misexplained. It was normal for an artist to have assistants but it was how knowledge was passed at the time (It's not like at the time of michelangelo there was art school). Artists were making apprenticeship and went on on their own (like becoming a tatoo artist nowadays).
Duchamp and dadaism was about the concept more than the context but he did most of his work himself.
Everything always come back to Warhol who changed the game (for the worst IMO). Again, Warhol had assistants and were supervising every step of the way of the creative process.
As much appealing as I find some of Hirt's works, I'm not really sure he is 100% involved in every step of the way lol
Hirst is even worse IMO as many of his ideas were stolen (or reused depends on what side you're sitting on) from other artists.. Not your idea and not your execution?

David Hockney vs Damien Hirst, by richskara on Jan 6, 2012 13:08:22 GMT 1, Some of Hockney's stuff is shite though to be fair.
E.g. the pool at the Roosevelt everyone was raving cos it was painted by Hockney, just a load of squiggly lines to me, load of knackers.

David Hockney vs Damien Hirst, by sneakerfreak on Jan 6, 2012 13:49:47 GMT 1, Hockney for me all the way as well ... used to go to his Saltaire gallery and once, when I was looking at something became aware of a bloke standing next to me, head up, peering down his glasses, hand clasped behind his back - looked and it was him him - he smiled and he wandered off and did exactly the same to the next and next person - to this day I cant determine whether he was doing it to see the appreciation of his work (as I know he was fiercely proud of being part of the regeneration there) or taking the p**s - either way looking back on it it was funny.
Some of his new stuff that looks to be going into the Royal Academy show is massive - really looking forward to going hopefully later this month.

David Hockney vs Damien Hirst, by johnnyh on Jan 6, 2012 15:02:04 GMT 1, Think they are both terrific artists but from slightly different times with different approaches.
Hockey's body of work shows his status as does Hirsts. There is always the assistants argument but he creates the real pieces and concepts etc.
Think they are both terrific have some Hirst's but no Hockney so I must be that side of the fence but I do love Much of Hockneys work and do hope to get one some time.
But Balibob that comment was spot on.

David Hockney vs Damien Hirst, by curiousgeorge on Jan 6, 2012 15:03:56 GMT 1, Shame he didn't feel this way when a struggling artist poured over 8 years into one work.
If memory serves he defined it as 'that fcuking photograph'
Worth searching the net for the movie 'waiting for Hockney'
