Invader • Warning • Print, by Shoot Again on Jan 6, 2012 9:34:09 GMT 1, I'm a newbie to the art world and this forum and as previous posters have mentioned, lurking in the background is a great way to learn about a topic that interests you. I dare say a lot of the posters here did the same thing when they started out. With regard to the flippers, it's pretty boring with everyone having a go at them every single time. If someone really wanted an invader print they would have gone to pow. I'm sick of people saying they missed out etc. how many were stood in the cold in the queue missing out? None I expect. The fact is, the prints are released at less than their market value hence the reason there is a flippers margin. I don't have a problem with it myself. If members spent as much time queuing for prints as they did moaning about flippers, you'd all have a sodding invader! Just my thoughts from an outsiders perspective.
Some people have a job and not everybody lives in London !!!

Invader • Warning • Print, by Cedric Mnich on Jan 6, 2012 10:01:28 GMT 1, Flipping is unfortunately a consequence of an unbalance between supply and demand. 50 or 125 prints released are not enough for invader fans. There would be less flipping if the edition sizewas 500 like Shep's. And flipping prices would be more decent. Gallery and especially Artist are responsible for flipping imho. It would be easy to adapt the size of the print and avoid flipping / speculation, especially when the artist has become famous and has a strong reputation. But it serves the artist's interest (art market value) who probably decides the size of the edition, creating hype, rarity and frustration (which is an engine of desire...). Given galleries promote the print launch weeks in advance, it would be easy to make an email pre-subscription during a small period of time and adjust the size of runs in consequence. Handiedan did so last year on facebook, the print size was adapted to actual demand and I bought two prints of which the biggest edition was a 365 prints run. I just sold it, but though it is gorgeous, I had difficulties selling it (sold for 149 USD, which is not a huge amount, though I made a 100 USD profit on it, which was not my initial intention when I bought it but changed my mind as my wife does not want it on our walls :/...). I think it was difficult to sell it because, most people who wanted one, got one initially. Therefore, that prevents from flipping and speculation. Profit can still be made, but in decent proportions.
PS : For those who don't have the info yet, Invader releases the Paris invasion book 1.2 (invaders 500 to 1000) in March.

I'd love to be able to queue for hours (days) to get my hands on the latest POW releases, well some of them, but living in the North of Scotland and the fact that I'm self employed kind of scuppers that... So short of sending someone down to do my dirty work I'm always going to be at the mercy of the internet, flippers and any lotteries that may or may not be run in the future...

Invader • Warning • Print, by Brushstrokes 75 on Jan 6, 2012 10:17:25 GMT 1, What 'big' galleries? and where have they professed it? I would imagine its very much in a galleries interest to create enough hype on an artist to get to the flipping stage. its pretty good marketing, wish i was that clever and motivated ...POW have said in the past they'd rather it didn't happen, I've had conversations with staff at Laz/Outsiders, the Obey site claims they disapprove (doesn't stop their latest prints hitting eBay within 6 minutes or so). Hype is all well and good, it'll always exist around certain artists, but I still feel there's a point at which by being just a little proactive, they could get more art into the hands of legitimate fans
I agree 100% with Manty. It's good business for the galleries.
People tend to forget that they galleries mostly make their money on OGs (or commissions and private dealings we don't know anything about) rather than via print release (even though they score big there as well).
The hype which is generated by the fact that most prints sell out in minutes (if not seconds) is good PR & cheap marketing. Prints sell out in second (they don't use any space in storage/quick turnorver). They get flipped for 2 or 3 times the selling amount which in the end help raises the artist profile/pricing.
For example, Dran's POW shows last year OG were probably around £3/£4K. This year they were probably £10K upward when prints remained around the same mark (mas o menos).
People don't like buying stuff that are lying around for a long time without anyone snapping it (they think something might be wrong with it).
Anyway, it's a virtuous cycle. It also helps the gallery get new artists under management as they are having a lot of successes with other artists in the past selling out.
Better for them to sell at those prices than sell for twice as much and not sell out straight away or at all.

Given you're a newbie, you probably missed the fact that most invader fans live outside London and guess what, they live worldwide as Invader is world famous (now on every continent) ! I tried to buy one online but it was sold out in a second (though I had enough time to see the add to basket button). Flipping in unfortunately part of that silly game and I accept it to a certain extent but won't facilitate it by buying prints at 2,3 or 4 times the launch price 2 weeks later. Flipping works as long as there are buyers.

Invader • Warning • Print, by Deleted on Jan 6, 2012 12:59:24 GMT 1, So how much these invaders going for then? Generally, they're not - not on eBay anyway, hardly any sold and the ones that have sold have gone for peanuts. That's why they're being offered up here for "trade"... A common case of flooding their own market. Yup! A silver finished this morning @ £551
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Warning-Invader-Silver-Limited-Edition-Print-Not-Banksy-/170756249616?pt=UK_art_prints_GL&hash=item27c1dd9810#ht_500wt_1363
Ended at a ridiculous time (7am) which didn't help but it does demonstrate that these just aren't shifting - hardly worth the 15 hours in the queue for the £64 profit once eBay and PayPal take out their fee's...
If anyone has a silver they wanna shift at a SENSIBLE PRICE gimme a shout.
TVM ;D
