What? that they don't like it and they think the only people buying it are doing so to follow the crowd or because they missed out on it? what a load of crap.
All art is personal taste of course, but Mantis is a great artist in a Banksy stencil style IMO. If you don't like it, don't buy it, and for anyone who buys because others are buying it, don't be so stupid, make your own minds up.

Really?
Not me, there's been plenty of 'must have' prints mentioned on this forum, I can make my own mind up and I think it really underestimates other forum members if you think they can't.

FOR SALE: Mantis....All Fall Down, by snakes on Aug 7, 2007 16:44:31 GMT 1, You may be partly right there george, especially when you consider the hype prior to its release; what with the photos miraculously appearing of the original on the old kent rd. Is this a Banksy? No its not. Who is it? Ah, its Mantis, sort of stuff.
I happen to like it like CBL and thankfully everyone does not all have the same tastes otherwise we really would be paying through the bloody nose for stuff on ebay!
I also happen to love the evolution print, but then again what do i know about art. All i like to think is that i have pictures on my wall that enrich my living environment, some that i can releate to, others that may entail a story behind them that i can tell, others that make me smile and so on.
Each to their own and thankfully everyone has differnt tastes and different motivating factors when it comes down to what they like or dislike. If for whatever reason someone gets caught up in the 'i must have one movement' then they are obviously some sort of plum!

you appear so angry sometimes. and a bit naive, imo. art is not pure and the current market, gallery scene, ebay scene, forum scene is far from altruistic.
why would people be buying on the secondary market? because they missed out on it?
why did Banksy pieces sit forever on POW and then all-of-the-sudden start flying off the shelves?
Why did 21st Century Love sit on Eyestorm for quite a while, and became such a target of lust only after it sold out? and because they missed out on it
Why did Denning take off, especially after he has been around for years?
just because someone is following the crowd doesn't mean they don't actually like a piece/an artist and won't develop a real attachment and love for it. It definately does happen. But sometimes one wakes up the next day(or week, month, year) with a tremendous hangover wondering what the hell is on your wall and how much someone will give you to get rid of it.
IMO, there are going to be a lot of 'art hangovers' in the near future.

FOR SALE: Mantis....All Fall Down, by alderevans2007 on Aug 7, 2007 16:47:23 GMT 1, My opinion is that the image looks pretty cool on the street. I don't think it is very technically brilliant or meaningful, but I can totally see why people would like it as a print. I think it would be silly if prices for this print went crazy.
There are tons of prints out their that I just simply like the style of although, they are not very meaningful or well done. I know CBL loves the style of stencilling and so do many others, so when it stikes a chord with people, there is going to be a market.
IMO, manits I doubt Mantis will never command major prices because banksy is the only King. (could be very wrong)

FOR SALE: Mantis....All Fall Down, by danvnuk on Aug 7, 2007 16:56:54 GMT 1, Not entirely sure if AFD had anymore hype and hysteria than anything else that gets released nowadays.
Every release gets a fanfare of publicity on the forum with people falling over themselves to bag one for themselves.....right now its Neate, a fortnight or so ago it was Denning.
Whats interesting is that people are selling highly prized Banksys to get Neates - that's something I haven't seen before.
Personally, I've only ever bought what I like - and I like Mantis AFD, the style reminds me of the early Banksy Stencil stuff - don't care for Evolution though.

Nope - if you re-read the comments by Bongo and Mose it was much more than them not liking the print.
I happen to like this print. It's not my all-time favourite but its a good image and very well produced. That doesn't mean that there haven't been some interesting and very valid points made on this thread.

FOR SALE: Mantis....All Fall Down, by carlito on Aug 7, 2007 17:01:39 GMT 1, the hype for AFD came directly from everyone loving the street piece and Frankie getting the print out there while it was still fresh in our minds
as for the comments about value...i'd hope most ppl understand that value is not necessarily a monetary value alone.....(or sometimes at all)

Yes, I think you've got some good points there.
Personally I haven't been involved in the Micallef, Denning, Neate etc drive, and you're right those that just follow sheep style could wake up with a bad hangover.
There's so much from lots of artists talked about here, only a few really get picked up on, I guess what I'm saying is there must be some quality there otherwise it would happen to all the artists. Personally I really rate Scorn & AMP too, they haven't been much of a hit though.

true, i definitely agree with you(even though I don't believe it to be anywhere near the dominant factor in the current scene). Some artists just resonate with some people and that is a beautiful thing and more power to the person who can connect with a certain piece.
For those that just love art, that feeling of opening a tube/box with a new work from someone that just hits you at the gut level is just amazing. I felt it a few times and it is a unique high that just can't be beat. I must say though, I don't generally get that feeling from prints. The times I've felt it have largely been originals I've purchased(Dolk and Titi Freak) or certain pieces in museums(Cy Twombly at MOMA in NYC being a great example). But damn, what a feeling.
perhaps that explains some of my negativity with the current market, the fact that a huge percentage of it is based on prints, something that i just don't really connect with. Definitely could be. we all have our biases and angles of perspective.
+1 for you man, thank you for making me think.

FOR SALE: Mantis....All Fall Down, by Lieberman on Aug 7, 2007 17:53:20 GMT 1, Just like to add that at the end of the day is the evening! Also, there is no right or wrong in art - if you like a particular artist or artwork and you can afford it, then buy it and enjoy looking at it on your wall.
No one should impose their taste onto you or tell you that you are wrong. Is their dress-sense wrong, is the amount they are renting their flat for wrong etc.?
If you are buying as an investment this may not be the case and watching and reacting to the market is relevant though I do not think that many people will tell you that a particular print is good because when you flip it you can make more money!

FOR SALE: Mantis....All Fall Down, by Harveyn on Aug 7, 2007 19:06:54 GMT 1, Mose - Many of your points are very well made and I must say eloquently put. Most of the sickening feelings of anticipation I have felt whilst waiting for a new piece of art to arrive, a feeling that turns into one of euphoria I associate with the originals I have purchased (DFace, Faile, Borf, Small, Denning, Brookes)
Personally I am with CBL on the AFD. I missed the hype completely yet liked the print enough to buy it on the secondary market. I would have been able to post pictures of it framed this evening accept good old Night Freight smashed the custom acrylic frame I had made for it.

FOR SALE: Mantis....All Fall Down, by mwjm0 on Aug 7, 2007 23:35:01 GMT 1, The composition is what makes the characters look squashed. When you imagine a child, you have a size in mind, the same of a mushroom cloud, as such the cloud distorts the brains natural scaling of the children, remove the cloud and the children would be to scale. Its a nice looking print in the flesh, saw it at found and I liked it. It's definitely one I could not own though (wife alert is well trained these days).
do all the children in greenwich have huge heads and arms down past their knees?

FOR SALE: Mantis....All Fall Down, by nixon451 on Aug 10, 2007 15:30:28 GMT 1, Mose - Many of your points are very well made and I must say eloquently put. Most of the sickening feelings of anticipation I have felt whilst waiting for a new piece of art to arrive, a feeling that turns into one of euphoria I associate with the originals I have purchased (DFace, Faile, Borf, Small, Denning, Brookes) Personally I am with CBL on the AFD. I missed the hype completely yet liked the print enough to buy it on the secondary market. I would have been able to post pictures of it framed this evening accept good old Night Freight smashed the custom acrylic frame I had made for it.
Do you mind if I ask which original Borf you have?
