Adam Neate The bigger picture, by RBK on Aug 7, 2007 17:50:18 GMT 1, Because it like comparing apples to oranges. Just because Banksy isn't technically a great artist - it doesn't take away from his genius. You can appreciate the skill and still not like the art. I doubt there are many that can't appeciate Logan Hick's skill - but when it comes down to people liking it, most people either really do or don't (I do btw).
Go check out the show and I'd be interested to hear your review. No shame if it just doesn't speak to you. I appreciate the craft/skill behind many artists but would never purchase a piece of their work.

Yeah, think you are right, need to see this in the flesh. Bit like the Found show, didn't like 'Turin Scam' much seeing images on pc but in real life it was stunning. Piece of the show for me though was a Nick Walker on zinc, but never thought abought buying one before!!

I'm like that with films - I hated Pulp Fiction & Lost In Translation... I think the more you're told how good something is the harder it is to like it.

Adam Neate The bigger picture, by numusic on Aug 7, 2007 18:18:00 GMT 1, Not that anyone will be interested but I have looked and looked at Neates work and i don't like it! I really want to like it but, sadly, I just don't! It must look a million times better in the flesh for so many people to be raving about it? Feel like I am missing out on something here!!!! Thank God - one less person to have to bid against He obviously just doesn't speak to you - the beauty of art - different strokes for different folks. I on the other hand think in years time he will have blown both Banksy & Micallef out of the water (and I love me some Banksy!)
Can someone maybe say something about why they like a particular Neate piece ? and why that same person likes any and all of them. Some speak to me, others not. Queens is excellent, portraits ?!? I'd find all the hype a tad more believable if someone at least mentioned the content and intentions rather than the "image"... anyone ? everyone ?

Nu could you give me some artsy language i could use to explain how I like them..as I'm not versed in art speak so i may not meet your criteria...
in laymans terms I like them as they are beautiful to look it, have meaning I understand on both a basic level and on further contemplation much deeper levels, for example the rich colours and brush strokes show broad sweeping movements and figures in action...and many with an inherent sadness (that being an 80's Smiths fan I find appealing ) ...have i mentioned how gorgeous they look?
Very few fine artists have any appeal to me, but Adam's work has opened the door to me and i enjoy it in an almost emotional way...not sure if this was what you were looking for..but its a little of my take on his work without actually examining each piece

I think alot of those piece are just a means to an end. He doesn't seem like the person to fret over what people see. He just expresses himself, paints what he feels and some of those ideas develop into really nice pieces. It's probably him just experimenting with composition, colour...etc. Could be talking crap!

Perfect mate, the comparison with the Smiths is probably spot on "heaven knows I'm miserable now", I get the same feeling from a few of them, kind of f**k it, happily depressed .Quite an odd shift.. we have these overtly cute Faile & Aiko rabbits, bright explosions of colour from Mcattee, Micallef's disturbingly grown up "loss of innocence" kids, irony loaded social commentary from Banksy.. and these depressingly "wallowing in it" portraits from Neate.
I'd say a combination of Neate and Banksy epitomised the Britain of today. Floods, Foot and Mouth, Celebrity, and Manufactured pap culture. Brilliant that art has stepped in to fill the void that corporate culture and celebrity politics created. Never thought I'd see the day !

Adam Neate The bigger picture, by tomhills1 on Aug 7, 2007 19:23:11 GMT 1, right, seems how we're using music analagies to try and describe adam neate's work here's my stab. for me there is a parrallel to someone like the coral (any other underrated technically superb band will do - doves perhaps). on first appearences they both seem appealing, yet it's their simplicity that first gets you. on closer inspection and with more time and effort put in getting to know them, they make you love them truly with their depth and attention to detail, that's what seperates the men from the boys.
i also believe that is the key to them getting such levels of devotionand loyalty, you have to work to get to know them but once you do, you feel like you've discovered them by yourself for yourself. now, if any of that makes sense i'll be amazed!

Gave me great idea, make an Adam Neate picture and add one of those little sound cards.. stick it under the cardboard and program it to moan different things, " I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour..".. ha ha..
Anyone wanna lend me their original ?
