Quite possibly the greatest modern painter of portraits, certainly inovative in the way he painted flesh. Always extremely inimate portraits, as he usually only painted family and friends. Heard an interview which said that often he would mix the paint for each stroke, so maticulous. For-runner for painters like Jenny Saville, imo.

I read an interesting extract from Martin Gayford's book about him in which he said he needed glasses but didn't wear them to paint. With the result that his paintings can look photographic at a glance or from a distance (although it could easily due to his skill with a paintbrush). One of those artists who can get you to look at his paintings for ages. May have to sneak along if I go down south at any point. ;D ;D
