WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by sfinks on Feb 17, 2012 11:14:42 GMT 1, Banksy - Girl with balloon Dolk - Girl with teddy
I liked the loneliness, the loss of something, the sadness, the darkness of these images. Street or print, same deal.
Girl With Balloon - You can slowly see something you Love drifting away, while you are a helpless child. GWT - You are attached to something that you dont want to, or is not of your choice.
When seeing these two on my first show, i stood watching them for a long long time. I can relate to them. Have GWT on y wall now, but as i refuse to hang fake stuff i am missing Girl With Balloon

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by cra66 on Feb 17, 2012 11:31:15 GMT 1, This image by Shepard Fairey got me hooked onto street art. It looked great, was cheap and accessible. This was my first "street art" purchase. 40 bucks!

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by pouke on Feb 17, 2012 11:36:05 GMT 1, I remember as it was yesterday, i bought my first "cassette tape" album of the beastie boys when i was 7, and i already loved the graffiti that i saw while taking a train.
Some of the artists: CES, DELTA, MICKEY, ARSEN, CONDOM (RIP).... and so on.
And while taking city trips to london, paris, barcelona...and so on, i found some The London Police, Invader, Lastpak and others.

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by pouke on Feb 17, 2012 11:40:24 GMT 1, What does it mean to me?
For me it's more than one reason, i don't like to follow the mainstream like a bunch of sheep that have to look, dress, and act like the latest trends.
Also the fact that an artist can express himself in everyway he want, and not be constricted to a piece of canvas.
But don't get me wrong, i can enjoy a good canvas too

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by sanchorockin78 on Feb 17, 2012 11:41:38 GMT 1, Style Wars!, Seen and the graf kings that rocked the subways and walls and seeing it filter over to the UK. The Chrome Angelzs ( anyone remember them?), and their wild pieces and the eventual evolution to Blek / Bansky and 'Street Art'. It was watching Style Wars when it premiรจred on TV when I was a mere puppy that blew me away and made me seek out more forms of this art...never knowing it would suddenly blow up to be a multi million business.

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by confused2 on Feb 17, 2012 11:45:52 GMT 1, When I was studying Higher Art (A Level) at school many moons ago, I wanted to draw everything in black and white. Whether it was pencil, black pen or an etching, I wanted everything to be simple and as lifelike as possible. I didn't like painting, but could copy a picture pretty well and my teacher told me I'd never do well in an exam scenario using a technique that displayed no expression. I stuck 2 fingers up at them when it came to exam time, and did the whole thing in black and white using pen and pencil using various images layered on top of each other - I was marked down for lack of expression. What amazed me, was that anyone could say what was or wasn't expressive. I preferred black and white drawing that verged on graphics, whereas most others painted and were lauded for their efforts. When I discovered street art, it really struck a chord with me, as it was individual interpretation and artists used whatever subject and medium they saw fit. There can as much expression in the simplest of stencils as there is in a complex collage of colours - amazingly, the majority of the art on my walls is simple and there's a lot of black and white!

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by misterx on Feb 17, 2012 11:50:12 GMT 1, I holidayed in London 2.5 years ago and bought two tshirts in Camden with a Shep Fairey print on the front and a Banksy print on the other...when I asked the man running the stall who it was and why etc. he looked at me as if I was from the moon and said "Its f#ckin Banksy mate...dont you know him??" I said No and he raised his brow with mocking distain....
That was the start of my addiction which I love more than anything except my wife and kids... Sadly, unlike you lot in the UK which for me is the epicentre, I don't know one person here on the Gold Coast who can even vaguely identify...my friends think I am mad, as do my colleagues at work...
when I see some For Sale threads for framed Street Art which I could never afford to ship framed I get really envious.....sigh.

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by Pistol on Feb 17, 2012 12:01:22 GMT 1, Being a massive fan of The Sex Pistols I used to go around various shows and galleries to view Jamie Reids work, as well as having a huge collection of his Pistols work. Whilst in (what used to be) The Tom Tom Galllery one day viewing some of Jamies work, I noticed a large oil painting behind the counter that had been painted over, with a small bird holding a grenade. I asked who this was by and I was told it was by someone called Banksy (who I had never heard of) I think if my memory serves me right it was up for sale at about ยฃ2-3k. I told the guy that although I appreciated the humour and liked the piece alot I was not prepared (or, even able to) pay that sort of money! Hindsight is a wonderful thing!! The rest is history. I now spend hours and hours cutting stencils all because I bought Never Mind the B*llocks in 1977

So one could say it was the counter-culture aspect that got you hooked.. do you not think that street art has now been consumed by mainstream culture... Opinions

Again here, one can assume you bought into the pistols because of Punks anti authoritarian ethic... and one can see the attraction to street art because in many ways Street art is the visual manifestation of Punk... as it shares similar DIY ethic... and maybe the same anti-establishment and anti-materialistic attitude

I do believe "style wars" and "subway art" hold great significance in the exporting graffiti culture internationally.
May be "hip-hop" culture... is Americas greatest export...

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by pouke on Feb 17, 2012 12:27:17 GMT 1, Yes, i think it is.
To sell products, they need something shocking to remember the advert, or commercial, and that works.
For me personally, i think it's shame that it gets so hyped, but it's also good for the artist.
On the other hand, it's also creating a lot of copy artist who want to join in, and make a few extra bucks.
But i do love that some new artist are creating their own style.
For me, i love the art that sticks it up society's ass.... pardon my french.
But also a artist like Gaudi, who was far ahead of his time, in the time he was living.
We could discuss like this for hours on

Henry Chalfant and Martha Coopers documentation of the NY Graff scene and Style Wars, following it into the galleries of New York where for the first time the pieces were being transferred to canvas and other mediums. I have hundreds of photos of graff from 80's London and you can see the evolution in style and technique.

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by Dellboyy on Feb 17, 2012 12:58:57 GMT 1, For me, about the same time as i bought my first place, a couple of guys at work were buying Banksy's from pow. Since i wanted something to fill my empty walls i checked out pow, completely ignored all the banksy's that were then for sale as i wasn't keen & bought a butterfly girl from Faile's website instead. Which i've still got framed on my wall!

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by boatyyy on Feb 17, 2012 12:59:42 GMT 1, fearlessness, intelligence and art combined attracted me back when...
sometimes innocent people get caught up in things/politics etc. they have little to do with and i like when the environment confronts them, some street artist warriors, empower themselves and use their talent to effect change and beautify the street (they don't take 'no' for an answer) - that's heart, i dig that!... thank goodness they have guns (paint?), little fear and passion!... and most are so good, they say, God, please forgive me if i hurt anyone (building) - so sorry... it was that attitude that did it for me... society can look at some of these artists as something other and less than what they really are - they don't understand.... i look at some of these vids and interviews of street artists on here and learn or am reminded of so much - most are so intelligent... they're not the idiots some think they are!

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by Trevorm on Feb 17, 2012 13:32:21 GMT 1, It was probably about the time my daughter came home, one evening, from 'Kings' in London and was describing and wondering why the big BANKSIDE she walked past had been changed - as if by magic - overnight to BANKSY
I'd been intrigued before but that episode kind of changed my point of interest in art toward the urban

Very romantic view and very well written but no! The fact that I liked punk did not lead me onto Street Art for the same reasons. It was purely a link, in that, whilst viewing Jamie Reids work I was introduced to Bankys work, which I liked, and in turn this got me interested and, I myself turned my hand to painting 'Street Art' You could maybe say it is in my personality, but I am no vegetarian, dog on a rope type anarchist!
You would make a great ghost writer if ever I bring out an autobiography

WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO STREET ART, by Dellboyy on Feb 17, 2012 13:41:04 GMT 1, Out of interest, I would like to know what was it that first attracted you to street art....? Which artists and why...? Lots of people talking about prints, when the question was about Street Art
Thing is it was the prints that introduced me to the whole street art world, that was the entry point for me. There's certainly not much around the streets where i live, unlike London at the time, so i discovered the whole world through buying that first couple of prints and wanting to know more.
