How high should you hang art?, by Cardiff on Feb 18, 2012 18:20:43 GMT 1, Being a bit OCD, I'm wondering if there are any design "rules" or "standards" relative to how high you hang art on the wall. For instance, should the height of artwork vary based on the height of the individuals living w/the art or is there a formula that takes into consideration ceiling height, size of the artwork, etc.? Another situation I sometimes face is if I have 2 pieces on the same wall...I tend to align the height of the center of the artworks (rather than the top of the artwork/frame).
Anyway, I realize that it all comes down to personal taste and there are tons of variables relative to other home/room characteristics...just curious if anyone applies any design principles or science to it?

I have some familiarity w/the rule of thirds and the Golden Ratio...just curious how to apply them into "how high should I hang this picture?".

How high should you hang art?, by Rolex on Feb 18, 2012 20:07:48 GMT 1, Don't quote me on this, but I built a house for a very well respected interior designer, she told me that all mirrors should be 1650mm from the floor to the centre of the mirror, this then covers 90% of people looking in it. This is the standard for hotels apparently. Anyway I used this same format for my artwork & feel it works very well, my only changes were for my kitchen which has a ceiling height of 2.8m, I pushed this figure up to 1700mm, & my attic which has a ceiling height of 2.25m I bought this figure down to 1600mm, I would say 1650mm to the middle of picture, is probable correct based on average ceiling height of 2.4mm. Hope this helps.

How high should you hang art?, by Warm Gun on Feb 18, 2012 21:16:41 GMT 1, I got this of wiki answers.....
"... rule of thumb is to hang all pictures at 57" on center. This is "gallery height" and roughly the average human eye level.
To do this you measure up 57" from the floor (mark here). You want your picture's center - whatever size - over this point, so measure your picture - top to bottom, divide it in half, ...
subtract whatever distance there is between wire and top of frame and then add that number to your 57". That is where you put the pin / nail in.

It's a funny one, but I position the centre of any picture across the top third line made from a reference point on the wall i.e. window reveal, other artwork. If there is a shelf on the wall the shelf will be in line of the top third line made on an artwork positioned next to said shelf.
I hope you can understand this!?
As you can tell, I am very weird, and try not to be 57" of "average human"!!

All four people in our house are different heights.... ;D
As you can see I have ignored that particular rule.

Funny that, I have to have them in line with the Door frame, however if hanging a lot of different sizes together then the bottom of the frame has to be level rather than the tops.

How high should you hang art?, by johnnyh on Feb 25, 2012 8:28:24 GMT 1, Centre at about my eye level. Their my pics. I bought them and want wherever possible it to be spot on for me.
But does vary depending on the wall and the piece.
But put it wherever you want it. At the height you want it

How high should you hang art?, by mayhem on Feb 25, 2012 10:31:14 GMT 1, Well what you need is: Pencil or 5,1 X tape measure,1 X ruler and 1X bubble level. Measure the walls width and height. Then measure your frames the same, depending on how many frames divide by the distance. draw some dots, measure half the frames width out left and right of the dots and that's the outside lines. Apply again working from floor level up to ceiling. Pencil marks are easily removed, cross them out completely if you have marked it wrong,or a nail will end up in the wrong place(tried and tested). All markings can be over painted once the hooks are up in the correct position while having the frames re-glazed. Or asking for advice on this forum about how to remove your own blood from one of your favorite Rene Gagnon prints.(Again, Tried and tested) If you have 4 frames the same size, this is quite simple. But its only a bit of maths if you are as anally retentive as I am about how they are spaced. Good luck with whatever you choose

How high should you hang art?, by balibob on Feb 25, 2012 11:44:47 GMT 1, I started off just banging in a hook where I thought it should be then just hanging it up. Now I'm out with the tape making sure each picture is exactly the same distance apart etc. Sad really isn't it.
