Prints and smoking, by zzz on Jan 23, 2012 20:09:28 GMT 1, Hi all,
I am looking for some sort of answer on hanging prints (framed) when someone in the house smokes. I have a tiny house with very limited wall space. I have only one print up on the walls. It is Banksy NBG, it is hanging in the kitchen as this is the room where my wife spends barely anytime (weird, I know but there is a reason). She is the smoker. Does not smoke a whole lot maybe at most five a day. All in the living room. I just got Dolk's Grenade Lovers, Tilt's Sex and Violence and two from Zach Johnsen framed and a little worried of hanging any of them in the living room. Any help would be much appreiciated.

Prints and smoking, by Phear Loathing on Jan 23, 2012 20:16:50 GMT 1, The kitchen is the one place I don't hang art because I don't want the smoke from any cooking to damage the works. I have one cheap piece in there and the glass is caked with a layer or greese looking stuff from cooking in the room.
Re: smoking and art, I would be curious to hear this too. For the longest time I didn't even hang art next to my patio door where I go outside to smoke (with the door shut mind you) for fear of damaging the work. However, with wall space getting limited I do have stuff by the door now...

Prints and smoking, by Deleted on Jan 23, 2012 20:35:04 GMT 1, As others have said, you need to get it out of the kitchen due to the grease, moisture etc in the atmosphere. The kitchen is generally the messiest room in the house and over time your print will reflect this.
If you're not fussed about any potential resale, then don't worry about it.
The same goes for smoking. You won't notice a deterioration, but it will happen. Combined with an odour.

Prints and smoking, by johnnyh on Jan 23, 2012 20:37:59 GMT 1, It's your picture and art. Smoke will affect as weather etc etc does.
Hang it in the living room and enjoy it. Far too much talk on perfection for prints. Look at auctions and how old some of the prints are.
But if you cannot enjoy it what's the point buy some shares etc.
Put it on the wall you and your wife enjoy it...

Prints and smoking, by Phear Loathing on Jan 23, 2012 20:38:58 GMT 1, glad to hear I am not just obsessive compulsive about my art hanging and I actually was doing the right thing....
What about hanging a framed piece next to a patio door where one smokes outside, door shut, like myself? I know when I come in I probably bring with me some smoke and residue into the air....

Prints and smoking, by manty on Jan 23, 2012 20:39:31 GMT 1, Seriously
Just so you all know
you cannot hang pictures
near smoke near heat near sunshine near water near kids near speakers near plasmas (LEDS are fine) near windows near radiators Near the ground Near to lighting near to cooking near to urine
the best place to put your art is in a portfolio, heated to a constant 14 degrees, in a vacuum sealed bubble type environment

It all depends on the music being played.

Its the velocity standing waves, if too close it can loosen the ink on the print, which will over time, fall off

Make sure the bass is turned down to avoid this.

Its the velocity standing waves, if too close it can loosen the ink on the print, which will over time, fall off This is only applicable in rooms in excess of 50 feet long as it is the bass sound wave that causes the trouble and afully formed bass wave is 50 feet, so all those that live in teeny weeny houses need not worry too much.

Prints and smoking, by loucastel on Jan 23, 2012 21:30:42 GMT 1, Some people really do have OCD when it come to prints etc, as Johnny said makes you wonder how some of the art has survived hundreds of years with open fires etc, for normal smoking to actually damage a print would take many many years, so don't be overly protective of these things, just hang them and enjoy, otherwise what's the point.
