JOSEPH KONY 2012, by eschiff on Mar 8, 2012 15:49:13 GMT 1, i think it is a good cause, but it may not be the right way to support it...i like at the article it says let's focus on Joseph Kony, not Kony 2012.
they've done a good job, every forum/fb/twitter is buzzing with this...that's step one. Stopping the problem may not mean giving money to an organisation that only gives 32% of its 8 million it raised to the cause.

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by hunter007 on Mar 8, 2012 15:53:51 GMT 1, the biggest thing we need to do is to make him famous. put him in the spot light, put uganda in the spotlight. tweet facebook viral the mutha like it's the second comin' money giving is ok, but ripples are what we need make to cause a tidal wave. even if the whole thing also serves some political or personal motives, stopping kony and preventing more children from harm would be worth the mouse clicks...
AGREED
Thats all i'm saying thank fuck for that

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by hunter007 on Mar 8, 2012 15:57:35 GMT 1, the rest is used for videos isnt it ?
Surely the video being discussed will hopefully have a bigger affect thanjust sending money to the Governemt? I like the idea of everyone getting out on the streets 20th April to raise Kony profile

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by sakyamuni on Mar 8, 2012 16:00:57 GMT 1, actually for most people in this area, this operation, launched by the US government without much preparation and coordination with local governments, is about oil. Recent discovery in Albert lake (oil production) pushes Uganda, backed by the US, to secure this area. The atrocities by LRA are not new, don't affect Uganda anymore (more in DRC and Central africa now), and won't stop if he is arrested (armed groups are everywhere in these areas, and one chase the other). What makes me dubious about this Kony campaign is the will to simplify a complex conflict, involving several countries, many armed groups, many contradicting interest, ... This is conflict resolution, not advertising... Arresting Kony won't change much for the affected populations in DRC, CAR and Sudan. And he is indicted by the ICC for Uganda only, not for the other crimes. And ugandan civil society had requested in 2005 to suspend the arrest warrant to allow peace talks. kony and the LRA, like Darfur before (who remember about them?) cannot be treated as coca cola advertisement campaign... American kids might like it this way, but this is not how things work in reality...

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by mayhem on Mar 9, 2012 10:55:24 GMT 1, With all the cynics, critics and anyone with a point of view slandering the film makers for self promotion etc. Was it not mentioned at the beginning of the film: This is an experiment? Cost me $50 for this experiment, so I hope it does some good.
Thank you sakyamuni for some inside knowledge. I Hope whatever happens in the future, its a better way of life.

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by BorntoKiln on Mar 9, 2012 11:42:26 GMT 1, I see the cynical side of human nature has raised its lazy head. I too, am an old lazy cynical bastad but then I thought sod it, the message and cause are worth supporting.
Yes, the charity will take more than its fair share of the pie. 31% going directly to the cause is not so bad. I'm not saying its good, but seems to be common practice within most leading organisations.
I volunteered for a leading mental health charity for many years and know that out of every pound donated or spent in their shops - 20p would go to the actual cause. 31% is better than a kick in the balls IMO.
Our governments are doing sweet FA regarding atrocities around the world. Never have and never will. We have to make them. Oil is there agenda. This campaign has given the people a chance to try and change that agenda.
If this works. Think how many other causes could be sorted using this method. A new world order - Curtis Mayfield RIP.

If people really wanted to be cynical, they would be looking at the Ugandan oil deal which went through less than a month ago
EDIT: sorry misterx, didnt see your comment

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by sakyamuni on Mar 9, 2012 14:57:25 GMT 1, In the news today: Daily Monitor: Kony resumes attacks in DRC
The Lord’s Resistance Army rebels have resumed attacks against civilians in the Democratic Republic of Congo, leaving thousands displaced. The new wave of attacks came after a lull of six months in DR Congo and Central African Republic where the rebels are currently operating. At least 10 people have been abducted and 3,000 displaced in 20 attacks in Orientale Province, north-eastern DR Congo this year, said the UN refugee agency UNHCR The overall commander of UPDF operations in Central African Republic and South Sudan, Col. Joseph Balikudembe, confirmed the attacks, saying they are occurring regularly. The new spate of rebel attacks have increased after UPDF withdrew from DR Congo in November last year, leaving a security vacuum. “The attacks by LRA in DR Congo are almost on a daily basis. UPDF left DR Congo early November 2011. FARDC [Military of the Republic of the Congo] are handling them. We only monitor these activities along the border with DRC, where we have deployments,” Col. Balikudembe said. Pressure to withdraw According to military sources, UPDF withdrew from the vast central African country after the opposition politicians in Kinshasha called for the withdrawal of the Ugandan army from their territory. UPDF had deployed troops in Dungu and Orientale province, where LRA was massacring and abducting people. This lack of cooperation may hamper the operations against the LRA and its leader Joseph Kony, who has been indicted by the International Criminal Court. The UPDF fighting squads are deployed at the DR Congo and Central African Republic border. When asked whether it was the LRA second in command, Okot Odhiambo, commanding the attacks, Col. Balikudembe said, Odhiambo is not in DR Congo. “Odhiambo is not in DRC, I can’t tell which LRA commander is behind the recent spate of attacks,” he said. Mounoubai Madnodje, a spokesman for the UN’s Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was quoted by agencies, saying there are only about 200 LRA fighters left. They work in small groups of five or six, raiding villages for food and forcing one or two people to work as porters.

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by sal on Mar 9, 2012 16:04:26 GMT 1, I wanted to write my thought on this, but Im so split on this subject, I really don't know what to think/say about it..
on one end I totally support stopping someone like Kony, but on the other hand, I can't help but noticing how trendy, MTVish, simplified, black/white this entire campaign is... I also understand that IS the right way to present things to youth of today, cause as soon as you start mentioning facts, numbers, true complexity of the problem, people will turn their heads...
in sakyamuni's words:
kony and the LRA, like Darfur before (who remember about them?) cannot be treated as coca cola advertisement campaign... American kids might like it this way, but this is not how things work in reality...
I sincerely hope Im gonna be ashamed of my cynical post here quite soon, that this campaign is gonna be successful, and become a historic, breakthrough way of solving similar issues worldwide..

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by They call me Stephen on Mar 9, 2012 16:07:12 GMT 1, I thought WarChild’s response was telling
“Whilst Joseph Kony is a good figurehead for a publicity campaign, capturing him is not a magic bullet that will solve the region's problems. The root causes of the conflict lie in poverty and inequality. The solutions are complex and must come from Ugandan people themselves.
We don't support Invisible Children's solution of putting American 'advisors' (troops) on the ground in Uganda. Partly because the LRA aren't in Uganda anymore, but also because it's not a solution advocated for by people living there. It's only right that people should scrutinise American or British motives in sending a military presence to an area that has just discovered reserves of oil.”
www.warchild.org.uk/news/kony-2012-our-response
I would be very keen in seeing who helped finance such a polished video and whether they had any higher connections or ulterior motives.

Yep, the proper way to raise awareness of child poverty in Africa is to brand images of em with LV logo's, stick em on prints or a canvas, turn em into luxury commodities and sell em in a West End Gallery to the people who cause the problem in the first place. Same but different
They don't say it will solve anything and you don't have to buy shit. They say it "may" help.. good enough for me. Didn't exactly break the bank, and hey, it "might" help.

This thing is a con...$30 for a " kit"? Rich oil reserves and the US keen on gaining a bigger foothold on the Dark Continent where it can begin to compete with China( for the minerals? Nothing to do with Kony... Everything to do with US expansionism... Crazy? Maybe, but remember my words as you increasingly see Africa being demonized on the news... Yep, the proper way to raise awareness of child poverty in Africa is to brand images of em with LV logo's, stick em on prints or a canvas, turn em into luxury commodities and sell em in a West End Gallery to the people who cause the problem in the first place. Same but different They don't say it will solve anything and you don't have to buy s**t. They say it "may" help.. good enough for me. Didn't exactly break the bank, and hey, it "might" help.
Totally agree !

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by eschiff on Mar 9, 2012 17:35:56 GMT 1, AGREED ,Its nice to see that im not the only who believes this will help, also done the box, now all sold out i see +1 mate. Video made me tear up when Jakob cried. Saved a mint on therapy. I'm not a sociopath after all.
nice to see that you're emotionally fragile! I mean seriously, the stated aim of the video is to create an 'emotional appeal and take advantage of that'...not to help the situation! That doesn't piss you off?
it doesn't piss you off that it took a slick video to make you aware of this? It doesn't make you mad that what they're fighting for (kony out of Uganda) has already happened?
there's so much wrong with this on so many levels. I'm glad it's making some people feel good about themselves, i'm sure the ugandans are happy that you feel like you're making a difference.

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by eschiff on Mar 9, 2012 17:38:12 GMT 1, from the huffington post: --- But critics here said the video glosses over a complicated history that made it possible for Kony to rise to the notoriety he has today. They also lamented that the video does not inform viewers that Kony originally was waging war against Uganda's army, whose human rights record has been condemned as brutal by independent observers.
"There is no historical context. It's more like a fashion thing," said Timothy Kalyegira, a well-known social critic in Uganda who once published a newsletter called The Uganda Record.
Ogenga Latigo, a politician from northern Uganda who previously led the opposition in Uganda's Parliament, said Invisible Children's perspective was too narrow to be allowed to define the popular understanding of an insurgency that displaced millions and in which thousands were killed or abducted.
"Theirs is a narrow perspective," he said of Invisible Children's work.

Nah, I like slick video's, usually white hipsters putting up bad wheatpastes to hip hop soundtracks, these also make me cry. At least there were black people in this one.

JOSEPH KONY 2012, by sal on Mar 9, 2012 17:54:06 GMT 1, “Whilst Joseph Kony is a good figurehead for a publicity campaign, capturing him is not a magic bullet that will solve the region's problems. The root causes of the conflict lie in poverty and inequality. The solutions are complex and must come from Ugandan people themselves.”
living in a country that experienced war and all the shitstorm that comes afterwards (Croatia), I often experienced this "Western idea" that arresting bad guys solves the problem.. I understand that for someone living in a more or less well organized western society, that does seem like end of all problems, but when you're looking things from a perspective where police, army, jurisdictional system, and governments are corrupted, that is not a solution.. it is something, far from that, but it's NOT a solution..
I dont know anything about history of Uganda, but Im quite sure the root of the problem has something to do with world's leading countries (colonizers), and common sense tells me this is where the solution might be..
btw, if you wanna be informed about ways to help, and places/actions that need support, Avaaz.org is one of the places to follow.. sadly, there are more than enough causes to make you cry, but also, make you feel good about yourself when you take part...
