help with this please.., by yeah on May 31, 2012 22:38:38 GMT 1, ...Not jumping to defend anyone as I see all points of view with this but just pointing some things out. And while I'm doing just that I'm wondering how people feel about the Jamie Reid Queen with Swastikas for eyes? Anyone have any problem with that? I don't like that image but if I did would that qualify me for free membership the the Hitler Youth or get me invited to Nick Griffins BBQ.?
ummmm, he, like some punks, was linking the queen to nazism, not supporting it. and given the history of this royal family it wasn;t a totally impossible accusation.
if you travel around India you'll see lots of Swastika's, but let's not go there...

help with this please.., by johnnyh on May 31, 2012 22:41:14 GMT 1, thanks for the info to those that gave it. yes johnny i did bite on the comments made by YEAH mainly because he/she made an assumption of me and my character based on a picture id purchased..ive never viewed a golly as a racial image nor did anyone else until it was made so. i have my own mind and refuse to be told how and why to think and feel by the powers that be and modern press/media..we (alledgedly) live in a free society but it seems to me we are becoming more extreme than the extremists we war with...i wonder how long it will be before something like a gorilla by mighty mo is deemed to have racial slants or something else.. very tiring trying to be politically correct in this free society we live in where everyone it seems is either a racist or is to scared to say they like something incase they get labelled as one
But Artful it is a racist image. As it is used as a stereo typical image. Hence as per my previous post the history of the term WOGS now even in your supposed nievatiity you cannot fail to make the connection. I also notice you call it a Golly well actually it is not a golly it is a gollywog dropping the wog to try and make the concept more acceptable actually does not work. If you post what are regarded as racist images what type of assumptions do you expect regardless of whether they are right or wrong. I also think we have been pretty polite with you over this image.
As per the comment by someone on the picture on the jam jar from their youth. Very fair comment but you might want to consider why it no longer appears on your jam jar. Same company still makes jam.
People do collect these images as per Boatty's point but they are usually historical images where this looks to me and could be wrong a modern print and so has no historical value at all. Hence my point in the original mail you do not know the artist or the intention on this piece which is worrying. I know you were enquiring here but bit weird you bought a modern image of this type. As say it looks quite modern to me I could be wrong on that

help with this please.., by yeah on May 31, 2012 22:48:08 GMT 1, thats an assumption... as for viewing you as a scapegoat?/ good grief..you are the only one who has made an assumption (as indicated) of my character, the other comments have been reasoned and whilst i may not agree with them, i respect them. as for the minus 43 thing? i did think that was a bad thing until i saw a couple of other members with over 200 minus, so guess thats just a playground name calling kind of deal that no one really gives a monkeys about anyway.. i think i did give you a minus by the way
you conveniently bypass my first sentence, namely "it was a fair statement that deserved more than a silly flippant answer". If had simply been a bit more humble at the start none of this debate would have happened.
I still think that you are burying your head in the sand and STILL defending yourself too much. you started the thread so don;t come crying that you've been misunderstood. You also let it lie for several days but then you seemed to have some urge to come back on here and start it all again. unwise. kep on digging and you might reach Australia. Many of us may not like the +/- system, but -46 is NOT to be sniffed at, and is very disrespectful to the people who vote you down to just suggest they are misguided. it IS an indication of how people feel and should not be brushed off as some sort of badge of honour. We already have politicians to do that for us.

help with this please.., by iamzero on May 31, 2012 23:58:16 GMT 1, Well Johnnyh I have stopped to consider why the Gollywog is now banned once more like I did when they actually made a big deal about banning it and I believe it is because of over zealous self rightous people trying to appear like their actually doing something worthwhile.
You or nobody else can take away my happy childhood memories no matter how politically incorrect you may see them. Maybe people with these type of views would do better trying to ban the use of the 'N' word in rap music which I find disgraceful and in poor taste.
I think we are overlooking one important point here... does the fella in the image have a valid license or permit for that fishing rod?

Well you enquired about a piece of art?? I question your validating this as a piece of art this is disputable. However your problem is that you did not Like the responses but the point being you posted the image and got a response however your complaint is that you did not get the response you wanted. Sorry mate that's just tough and as mentioned may be you should consider the views.

If your happy childhood is based upon golliwog images on jam jars you might want to see someone about it. I would assume a happy childhood would be based upon more than this. You quote golliwog is banned I am not sure it actually is more a case that everyone agreed it was not a good image to be associated with so it actually was dropped by companies and most of the public due to its connotations. Eg there are much better images and more positive things o show our children than this stereo typical image.
Odd you find the N word a disgrace and yet the use of the image and the WOG term fine and a part of your happy childhood. The use of the N word in rap is adifferent subject and a seperated discussion. But even using your analogy two wrongs do not make a right.
You can call it a jam jar logo, a cuddly toy a piece of art etc etc etc but it still is what it is

help with this please.., by rottenredrooster on Jun 1, 2012 1:11:59 GMT 1, At the time these repulsive dolls/drawings were around racism was rampant. Images like this are used to put other races down. You might be familiar with the supremacist magazine Punch, they liked to use stereotypical drawings, like the ones on this thread, to deliberately encapsulate the differences they preplanned to convince people that one race was less worthy than another (mainly so they could gain more wealth).
Zealous? I would say those who feel the need to have these images for only the purpose of reliving a happy childhood are the only ones in pursuit of an objective.
The original poster said they like the image... Why?
Did you buy the image to protest and ridicule the tasteless way in which caricatures were used to promote European dominance?

help with this please.., by iamzero on Jun 1, 2012 7:40:43 GMT 1, I'm beginning to get bored of your racist fingerpointing witch hunt and think it is in itself is more offensive than the age you are pullin to pieces. I'm quite disappointed to find that a few well respected members with beautiful art collections can spout such lame rubbish. It never cease to amaze me when people that appear so knowledgable can become so high and mighty and dare I say in patronising when it comes to forcing their opinion on others in a condescending manner.
It has now been suggested that the image owner is now supporting the negative European charactuers degrading black people which is very serious accusation. If you make and accusation of racism in the workplace you better be ready for the storm that follows as that is a dangerous can of worms to open.
Funny how one of the features that the artists used to degrade the slaves was a very large p***s which these days is a stereotype many people of black race are happy to celebrate?
I would ask why there has to be hidden dark reasons why someone likes an image like the rubbish Freudian idea that men like porn because they want to sleep with their mothers? Why can't I simply like an image because I like the image and not what it might represent in some iffy therapy session? Sometimes I like the colours or the composition and sometimes yes the message but if you think this particular image has a racist one then the problem lies solely at your door.
Explain to me how can a four year old kid that likes the smiley Golliwog character have any idea of the history of guilt you are forcing upon him? He sees nothing more than a smiley dude until you point out that because he likes that little man with an unlicensed piece of hunting equipment that he support the enslavery of an entire race of people and likes to inflict harm and suffering upon innocent free swimming creatures.
Completely losing faith with people on here. I will agree some will find this image offensive but surely you can see that not everyone that may like this image is a racist.
Mr silkie please lock this thread it is tiresome.

If you had read my post further up I did say that it is clear that those who own them are not necessarily racist.
I find it odd why you feel the need to cling to something like this. Just let go.
Where do I suggest the OP is a racist. I am just pointing out why it can be viewed as racist and what it stands for. Read more closely.
I'm beginning to get bored of your racist fingerpointing witch hunt and think it is in itself is more offensive than the age you are pullin to pieces. I am just pointing out why it can be viewed as racist and what it stands for. help with this please.., by yeah on Jun 2, 2012 3:43:11 GMT 1, you conveniently bypass my first sentence, namely "it was a fair statement that deserved more than a silly flippant answer". We already have politicians to do that for us. first sentence wasnt in my opinion, rude, so didnt require a response. not got head in the sand as iam not defending the print, just my character. not crying ive been misunderstood, objecting to your assumptions. sorry.. been 1788 miles away until yesterday and had no internet access or desire to find any..another assumption? neg. pos. thing goes over my head to be honest, as has no substance that i can see. thats my opinion, not an assumption by the way. a bit of a disjointed reply but you raised a number of points i wished to address singularly. think thats it...?
if you didn;t think your first ever reply on this topic was flippant and that peoples opinions on here mean nothing, then it's not worth discussing to be honest. some people in life have no sensitivities or care for others. simple. we've found one.

you obviously have no respect for peoples' opinions so why bother staying on here?
are you really suggesting that people have no opinion of their own? or that if someone genuinely agrees with someone else that they have no mind of their own?
if so, then you have a very low opinion of the humna race and very low opinion of people on this forum.

yeah..
NO!!
The OP wanted info on the print he had bought.
Thats all.
No one, yourself included, has offered a shred of helpfulness regarding the print.
Create a thread if you want to turn the OP's presumably sincere query into all things paki, wog, nigga yid, gypo, mong cripple, bender, or chink.
OF COURSE you are welcome to an opinion regarding the ugly wordings you brought up...but wtf has that got to do with the guys question about some info on the print?
He didn't ask for opinions...he asked for info.
I grew up with servants in my house.
Does that make me racist( in your opinion of course...)?

help with this please.., by iamzero on Jun 2, 2012 8:46:16 GMT 1, Didn't wanna post anymore on this thread but he does have a point. No one has helped regarding the artist or the run of this print. For all we know the artist could be of black origin with a hatred for course fishing and is being ironic like Jamie Reid's Swastika Eyes.
Maybe we've all made assumption and have ended up looking a little foolish?
Wow you had slaves in your house, if I'd have know that when I visited the gold coast I could've borrowed on to point out all those jellyfish you had on that pesky beach of yours.
Over and out.

It never cease to amaze me when people that appear so knowledgable can become so high and mighty and dare I say in patronising when it comes to forcing their opinion on others in a condescending manner.
Iamzero no one as far as I have read has accused anyone of being a racist. Just the symbolism and connotations of the print. Likewise Mr X
Symbolism and the context is important and many people on here seem to be missing the point. No ones being high and mighty etc. Seen no great justification of this as a piece of art either by the way.
However I have been to a lot of football matches and in the bad old days as it were I regularly heard monkey chants etc and often saw fruit thrown at back players. Co incidently never an apple, never an orange nor a plum only a banana.
Now there is nothing racist about a piece of fruit is there? It's just a harmless banana. In which case why not throw the plum, cheaper more mess when they hit etc but it misses the symbolism and connotation.
May be the symbolism of images/actions and their connotation is something worth teaching the 4 year old you mention. Kids raise their hands at school nothing wrong with that. When a nation raised its hand to Hitler it meant something completely different
So may be instead of slagging us off you might want to spend some time seeing why these pictures or symbols gain this reaction. Anyone of you or artful may then actually be able to find out who did it and why. As mentioned it does not look old so no historical value.

help with this please.., by boatyyy on Jun 2, 2012 9:48:05 GMT 1, @op - nothing wrong with using some of these historic images in "art"- have seen klu klux klan images used in current day for example and was very impactful in the way executed, in my humble opinion; but feedback, this poster just didn't hit home and the image wasn't used in an interesting creative way; but did make me think of frame of mind of the creator... but frankly, had it not been for this forum, this image would not get an iota of attention from me, personally... (really do hope that is not too harsh of feedback... not the intent) misterx - quite interesting you jumped from this image to bringing up servants...

No, but the implication that we all equate the word "servant" with black people probably does..

I think all members of the humna race should be deported to Amercia.

help with this please.., by misterx on Jun 2, 2012 10:56:06 GMT 1, The servants were indeed black....but they could just as easily have been white!
Nuart, I disagree, as the definition is " One who is privately employed to perform domestic services."
Anyone, of ANY colour can be described as a servant...it knows no colour boundaries .
Does HRH and the rest of 'em not employ servants? Does that make them racist ?
Of course not.
