Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by primetime on Dec 22, 2011 5:37:38 GMT 1, all things being equal (cost and likeability), do you think the Benzyloxylurea (smaller edition, woodcut) or the Lanatoside (larger of the prints, more spots) is the better buy.

That's a difficult question to answer. I spent a day weighing up the two and went for the Lana because it's a larger print and although I originally preferred the colours of Benzi (I wanted a classic Hirst spot print), I thought the colours of the Lana would more closely match the Riley print I have (it is also nearly the size of the Riley whereas the Benzi is smaller). For that reason, along with the fact I missed out on the original price of รยฃ3,300 by one which meant the Benzi would be รยฃ1k more (although I gather the Lana has now moved up by 20% as well) meant that I pulled the trigger on the Lana.
Other things to consider is that Benzi is a smaller edition (55) and is a woodcut (with deckled edges), whereas Lana is a higher edition (100) screen print with 'sharp' edges. I'm not sure whether a screen print is nicer as I haven't seen both in person and although I gather the woodcut's are very nice, I would imagine both are stunning in person.
Either go with your gut instinct, toss a coin or check your bank balance and make a decision. You'll be more than happy with both I'm sure

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by jdwheeler on Dec 22, 2011 11:33:18 GMT 1, I felt the Lana one was the most faithful representation of the original spots (layout and spot size). I think this is what Hlarmy is on about.
I want it to have a clinical look when framed so don't really fancy woodcut or deckled edges. The woodcuts do look superb though!
Last time I checked, Paragon Press still had some 2010 woodcut variations (I think they are more expensive though).
For me, Lana is the spot print I have been waiting for.
You could also consider...
Opium, Valium, LSD - the original Damien Hirst prints on Fuji paper. Lots of fakes about, difficult to prove provenance, issues with fading signatures and I assume the prints sticking to perspex mentioned above alludes to these ones.
Paragon print sponts - considered much better quality, lower edition sizes, but much more expensive.
The Othercriteria.com metallic spot prints (Carvacrol, Proctolin, Lepidine, Histtidyl and whatever the gold ones were called) - very good quality, but not for me.
You could also buy original canvases from the usual auction houses/galleries, but only a few were actually done by him - mucho, mucho deniro.
Othercriteria also do white spot print skateboards (signed and unsigned) which I guess would look cool on the wall.
With regards to were will prices go - I bought this as I always wanted it and the source price will be increased. As with all art at this level, I assume it is a sunk cost. Most importantly enjoy it!

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by jdwheeler on Dec 22, 2011 11:54:26 GMT 1, Which one is that Volvic; I'm hoping it's Lana as I bought one of those as I wanted a classic Hirst spot print. I also think that framing this and the Riley Olympic print together in the same way would look pretty damn nice! Not a fan of the OC framing! Thanks Hlarmy, the thought of hanging Lano with my Bridjet Riley has just cost me 3 grand (No 20)............. ;D
Martin.
Are you saying you have edition 20/100 of Lana?

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by hlarmy on Dec 22, 2011 12:05:13 GMT 1, Good post Jdwheeler... very valid point about the provenance issues with a lot of older, quite similar spot prints. This has made me very wary about buying in the past, and so it's great to know the history is solid and the piece genuine. Also this may also mean that with OC proof of purchase / CoA, these could in the long haul become quite sought after... I would also suggest that although I agree when buying art it's not a bad tactic to consider art as a sunk cost, I'm pretty sure this particular buy won't be a sunk cost
Martinm, apologies for costing you ยฃ3k but I look forward to receiving a PM thanking me in February when the two are framed together and on the wall

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by mace on Dec 22, 2011 12:51:28 GMT 1, Just bought Lana # 23. One more left for 3K, under consideration though (according to Charlotte from OC).
Classic piece of art, I'm happy. Although it hurts a bit that my hard-earned money goes to this d*ckhead.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by Gentle Mental on Dec 22, 2011 13:00:17 GMT 1, i think hirst is reeeeealy milking this...to a point that is almost obscene.
It's a lovely concept, no doubt. Plus it's an awesome status symbol. And it's super wall friendly. As wall friendly as a wallpaper in designer furniture store.
But i've lost count of the permutations out there. multiply that with editions of all sizes.
And those who bought one will be instantly converted to love it fervently and defend it to death as a huge amount has been paid.
Trouble is i'm not sure these will be the last of the series. And i really wonder what is the final edition size of these would be? 10,000? 100,000? Hirst could be going for a record here...
Guess my point is - If you're buying it, buy it like you would with an expensive watch, or a fine luxury bag, there is no edition size, buy it to enjoy the luxury/beauty.
It's definitely not scarce.

Agreed!. I have taken receipt of my Bridget Riley and ordered Lano. It's the perfect spot print for me given the size and at an ( just ) obtainable price...at the moment. Cathy has confirmed they have now price hiked to 3,6k and are still selling fast

I agree!! I bought the original woodcut release earleir this year and was told it was a "One off". I dont think any is a one off with Mr Hirst if it makes him money.
It is a great image though :-)

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by larsson on Dec 22, 2011 13:29:49 GMT 1, Having seen them all in the OC in person I can second that they are wonderful - particularly the woodcuts (favourite being Benzi). Totally agree that Lana makes a great companion to Riley's Rose Rose - and also that Controlled Substances is probably the most interesting of the lot.
Benzi and Lana appear to have moved to second stage pricing (launch + 20%). Does anyone know if Controlled Substances is still at launch price?
Great post jdwheeler. Interesting to know about the woodcut spot prints released by Paragon in 2010 (agreed Hirst + team of assistants + are milking this to death). In terms of investment - value increase - I think it's hard to say. I seems to me if you've got a solid way of reselling to top end buyers you should be fine (i.e. if you bought at launch price I very much doubt it's going to lose any value). But if you've haven't got a reliable way of selling then I'm not sure if / how you'd find the market.
For example - check the price differences on the 2010 Guaiazulene on these two sites:
www.metrogallery.com.au/artists/53/damien-hirst/ web.artprice.com/classifieds/fineart/show/758217?idcurrencyzone=1&l=en
Bear in mind one is in Australian Dollars and the other in Euro's - but still as price comparison. It appears Metro Gallery has sold well and Axel Pop Art is still looking for a buyer. (Perhaps I've helped him find one....)
I have no idea what the original launch price for this print was.
There are lovely. But agree with Gentlemental - that these are luxury, if you can afford one - with certainly no guarantee on a quick price increase. I guess if you're buying - buy to enjoy for a few years with the hope that one day a banker will blow their Christmas bonus on your print at auction.
Either way if you're in the big smoke they're worth popping in to have a look at and appreciate - then afterwards you can pop across the road into Opera, inquire about prices and fall over in shock and amusement...

its a status symbol, just like Banksy work nowdays,. I remember the 50 thread being used almost daily, now its hardly used other than UnHuman, no interest unless potential profit to be made, not all cases of course, Maybe im just a tad jealous and cant afford much more than whats on the 50 thread. Although if i did have a Hirst on my wall id have a party most weeks until everyone i know had seen it, and asked is that hirst ? Id say yeah , course it is i have a huge p***s to you mug. then point at my Banksy in the corner,

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by jdwheeler on Dec 22, 2011 13:52:38 GMT 1, I have no idea what the original launch price for this print was.
Hey mate. I got sent this in 2010 from a gallery exhibiting them when Paragon Press released them...
Spots
Doxyalmine Etching ยฃ9,300 Bromphenol Blue Etching ยฃ9,750 Phenformin Woodcut ยฃ6,150 Methionine Woodcut ยฃ6,750 Norleucine Woodcut ยฃ7,950 Guaizulene Woodcut ยฃ9,375 Bromobenzotrifluoride Woodcut ยฃ9,875 Tryptophan Woodcut ยฃ11,025 Tyloxapol Woodcut ยฃ11,050 Cocarboxylase Woodcut ยฃ12,400
These prices INCLUDED VAT and framing.
You could get them slightly cheaper from various sources. I was offered a Methionine unframed for ยฃ4,250 plus VAT, but you get the idea.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by redfred on Dec 22, 2011 14:08:22 GMT 1, From this are we saying Lana is a good or bad buy from an investment viewpoint, artistically I very much like it and have 20 minutes to make up my mind on the last one at the old price, advice gratefully accepted!

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by jdwheeler on Dec 22, 2011 14:15:11 GMT 1, For me it was like this...
It might be worth more, but most likley it will not appreciate massively (in real terms) in value once exit fees (auction house etc.) are taken into account. I also get the impression it wont be particularly liquid asset (like most art at this level).
However, it may be my only time to get the style I like (big, white background, lots of spots in a portrait rectangle) with decent provenance/excellent quality for ยฃ3k including the VodkaAndTonic.

I went for a Lana as I had always liked Opium and the other series of spot prints. IMHO, it's a nice print, by a known seller and at current purchase price, worth the investment if your into it for that!. Me personally, I would rather pay 3k for a print I have always wanted up on my wall. If it's worth something in 10 years all the sweeter!.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by Martin M on Dec 22, 2011 15:36:29 GMT 1, Thanks Hlarmy, the thought of hanging Lano with my Bridjet Riley has just cost me 3 grand (No 20)............. ;D Martin. Are you saying you have edition 20/100 of Lana?
Hi Jd, i did have the 20th Lana print at ยฃ3000 on reserve (not sure if it was actually numbered 20 though), went up to see it this morning and after half an hour of staring at spots! I declined on the purchase, just didn't do it for me, something about the colours maybe, i liked more the Benzy and N-Methyl for the vibrancy and just seemed to be easier on the eye. Anyhow it means there is still the last Lana available at ยฃ3000 for anyone tempted.
