Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by Poppy Sunshine on Dec 29, 2008 21:35:41 GMT 1, Thanks for updating me on the current situation loucastel. I reckon Eyestorm can be officially labelled a***holes if they won't or can't distinguish between genuine and fakes of their own releases. In the last 2 years they've gone from stating that they will no longer have anything to do with secondary market Hirst prints to being the only people who can sell them on the secondary market with full authentication. On top of that they've massively raised the price they sell them at. Looks like OC are favourite for any of my future Hirst orders. Winter, that love love love is an absolute beauty.

If you think about it they have a bit of a monopoly going on, if you cant tell the good fakes apart from the real deal, and they sell it for you what better provinance can you get, if there was a way to tell them apart (which they say they can) why havent they made the information public, as that would surely stop a lot of this. and round up the fakes still out there. Whilst the rest in circulation could then be registered.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by zammo on Dec 29, 2008 22:39:12 GMT 1, well i must say i do love the spot prints at first i wasnt impressed but now i would say they are probably my fave prints, valium and lsd are stunning in the flesh, and also a considerable purchase, the only thing stopping me at the min is the mrs threating to cut off my swingers if i go near them as she knows i am too weak to resist temptation

hi wizbang, the main difference is that: 1. These are silkscreens 2. They are screend onto decent somerset stock where as the older eyestorm prints are on a glossy lamda print (which may fade in the future) 3. These are correctly signed v the Eyestorm one's that were signed in pen of which many have faded. 4. These will come with correct paperwork ie invoice/receipt from the primary source which will hopefully avoid future 'issues'.
I must also add that Loucastle's one looks fantastic!

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by pezlow on Dec 30, 2008 11:18:11 GMT 1, Good thread this with lots of interesting information. Loucastel - I love that framed spot print - truly awesome. Bet it looks 20 times better in the flesh.
I had no idea about the extent of the problems with the fake eyestorm prints. Given the number of fakes around I take the view that it behoves the gallery to offer an authentification service (even if they charge for it). To refuse to do so is irresponsible and could have a seriously adverse effect on the market for these prints.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by curiousgeorge on Dec 30, 2008 11:21:53 GMT 1, If i remember correctly Eyestorm had previously said yes to a print that turned out to be fake (could be mistaken). If so this might be the reason of the stance they now take regarding giving COA's???

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by pezlow on Dec 30, 2008 11:25:58 GMT 1, If that is right and the publisher themselves cannot authenticate these pieces then I would be inclined to steer clear of them full stop. Even if you know that your print is genuine who is to say that 20 years down the line when you or your children want to sell it they will be able to prove that.
Presumably this also means that Eyestorm did not keep a database of the buyers of the prints so that provenance could be traced. Extremely unwise in hindsight.

Absoultely spot on. I'd love a Hirst Spot print (as I very much doubt a painting will ever be in reach!) and the idea of buying any of the early editions from Eyestorm is a non started now. All Eyestorm are ensuring is that future Hirst buyers (with any sense) will run a mile from them. I cannot believe that they have been so wholly naive with all of this. Nice to see that Hirst himself has let it run, and yet to publically do anything to resolve!

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by Poppy Sunshine on Dec 30, 2008 14:25:05 GMT 1, Just a quick note in addition to supermans post the spot prints can be ordered framed and the framing is expected to be about ยฃ400 for white aluminium and plexiglass with conservation mount etc. Also, the butterfly etchings coming out will be 41 x 44cm with an image size of 25 x 30. There will be 6 types and they will be in editions of 75 each. Cost being ยฃ4,000 plus the dreaded. This makes the spots look a hell of a lot more appealing to me personally and bearing in mind the cost of previous editions I reckon it's an opportunity not to be missed if you want one. Good luck all.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by Poppy Sunshine on Dec 30, 2008 14:40:49 GMT 1, No sorry not seen them in the flesh so apologies if I sounded a bit more in the know than I actually am. I know there are a lot of fans and a lot of bashers of Hirst but there's no denying the iconic status of these pieces. They have to be a sound investment at this price if that's the angle anyone is looking at and bearing in mind the fact that no one seems to know a real one from a fake from previous editions then this has to be a real good opportunity to bag the genuine article with no strings or worries attached. They're certainly not being greedy at these prices. A limited piece from an edition of 150 from the most famous and successful artist on the planet at the same price as a flipped Banksy. Surely not a lot to ponder on.

Damien Hirst Spot Prints, by Poppy Sunshine on Dec 30, 2008 15:00:31 GMT 1, It's another of those strange things with Hirsts stuff. Some love it and some hate it. I have pieces of art which people absolutely hate but it shows it's down to my personal taste and a well worn out subject on lots of threads previously. You might say "seen one spot print you've seen them all", but they really are quite captivating when you stand in front of one and it's difficult to know why. Similarly with Parla you can stand and stare and not know what it's pulling you in whereas another person might view it as a childish scribble. Perhaps this indicates the brilliance of them. Or have we found the 21st centuries version of the emperors new clothes?
