Ian Francis '10,000 years from now', by Deleted on Apr 24, 2012 14:11:51 GMT 1, Has this been mentioned? I've found Ian hit and miss, but the skill and the image on occassion is unmistakably right, the new show looks to have a few pieces I'm won over by.

Love an empty red coat..looks beautiful and please could someone take pictures at the show so I can really see it? Also Guardsman really stands out as an intimate little picture, with some feeling to it (I sometimes find this lacking in his porn/movie star themed pieces - but thats as much about what I want from a picture as Ian displays)
It would appear Ian Francis has well and truly fallen off the radar of the urban stick forum

Can see why he also goes down well in the states but not really sure he is an Urban artist in my book. Thats not to knock his work as just do not really think his work is urban which I think why he is not so popular on this type of forumn. But he sure can paint lovely stuff in the show not sure of the names

My favourite large piece is "a flock of birds.." it is stunning especially the image of the girl with the birds around her. Empty red coat is very well executed, although its not an image that does it for me. Guardsman is not up in the gallery, but looks like it will be very nice, the three black and white pieces on paper were all great

Ian Francis '10,000 years from now', by johnnyh on Apr 25, 2012 7:47:22 GMT 1, Think people who like him will laud him as doing so myself. But not sure your point on the timing and being lauded on here. As nothing implies to me he ever was an urban artist / street artist unless comming from Bristol defines that. But see no connection with him and urban enviroments. So may be a group of old members loved him and they have gone whatever but as I say like his stuff hence viewing the thread
Just I can understand why the pieces that come up for sale on here do not seem to sell that well as it is an uncomfortable fit as not really urbam. Same could be said of Adam Neate, Parla etc All of whom are great artists but more gallery based. Quite a lot came from the urban /street scene and used it came through it whatever but have moved on as it has.
All those mentioned still lauded on here but by a few
Think lots of people on here who like contempoary work as well as street/Urbanwill like him but I do not think he is an urban artist regardless of when he was or wasn't lauded on here.

Ian Francis '10,000 years from now', by Deleted on Apr 25, 2012 7:53:14 GMT 1, wow you really wanted to use the word lauded as I said times change (whether that's got anything to do with urban or not is debatable, as I'd say this place has a lot less to do with any of those definitions than ever before and alot more to do with money and simplicity but that's a debate for another time and place)

Ian Francis '10,000 years from now', by johnnyh on Apr 25, 2012 8:47:03 GMT 1, He still is Biggie hence he is on here.
But think thats the point Laz etc threw prints around thats why he was discussed on here through their Banksy links. Thats the connection not that he was urban or a street artist.
To many prints for the UK but not for the states where he does so well as he suits that market and a lot of his work is based on that market.
Difference is he is no longer really promoted by Laz to this market as they have taken him else where. |Looks like a nice show as mentioned I quite like his stuff so this is not knocking him in anyway. Remember he has only been around for a few years and gone along way so he has moved quickly through

Ian Francis '10,000 years from now', by johnnyh on Apr 25, 2012 9:20:09 GMT 1, No Laz did not release the prints but they I think were managing or being the house for his OG since around 2006 so they do influence when and where the prints come out and go to.
Think they have also set his direction etc as his gallery
Could be wrong on the timings and do not know his earliest prints etc

Opening tomorrow night.
I've seen a preview and some of the work is brilliant. A nice contrast to Conor Harrington's.

Laz did not start representing him in the UK till 2008. By then, the 'damage' was done by BLK MRKT releasing too many prints of one show in too little time and the credit crunch finished him off as the print market goes.

Ian Francis '10,000 years from now', by johnnyh on Apr 25, 2012 9:49:04 GMT 1, I'm not quite sure what you mean johnny? Laz did not release prints but told them where to release them? Francis work was available at deforges, black market, red prop as well as others, they released too many prints!
Sorry mate I thought and as I say could be wrong but that he was managed by Laz I could be completely off but thats what I thought. Now as mentioned do not know dates of first prints etc as not a great follower of his but thought he joined Laz in 2006/7 so they would have been involved in what was going on with his career as it were. Thats my point but sounds like I am off so will bow to your better and correct knowledge. (not meant in a funny way)!!

Ian Francis '10,000 years from now', by RolexDave on Apr 25, 2012 10:02:44 GMT 1, No need, we all do appreciate your posts.
Though Laz has released one print in the US in 2010/11. A small edition of 30. To my knowledge, it is still available.
