Original Fake KAWS Companion Cushion, by Happy Shopper on Apr 23, 2012 13:56:01 GMT 1, I like Kaws, but he really needs to do something new, and instead of charging ridiculous money for stuff like Cushions and T-Shirts he should set up an authentication process for his Art Editions. The fakes are getting too good!

Original Fake KAWS Companion Cushion, by brendan1985 on Apr 23, 2012 14:07:35 GMT 1, I Agree. I would like to see some quality abstract prints. Nothing he has released in the past few years has really had me all that interested, It seems like he is at a loss for ideas.

Original Fake KAWS Companion Cushion, by Happy Shopper on Apr 23, 2012 14:12:13 GMT 1, What's weird is that his originals are quite different, and I like his abstract stuff too. I don't know why he doesn't bring some of that to the editions and Toys.
I do like "Partners" though... but I know I'm alone on that !

Original Fake KAWS Companion Cushion, by sal on Apr 23, 2012 14:34:07 GMT 1, I think at some point Kaws separated his work into 2 directions - high end art, gallery/museum snows, and releasing prints/vinyl/whatnot based on his work for some 5 years ago.. until 2-3 years ago, it was all part of the same project, but nowdays distinction gets more and more obvious with every mass release Vs every show... Im guessing it will take another few years before his 1st abstract prints get released (if)...

Original Fake KAWS Companion Cushion, by volvic on Apr 23, 2012 18:49:53 GMT 1, Hes not stupid. I am sure he is aware that if he produced prints of his most famous paintings he would sell a truck load but he does not want to cross his market's over.
His toys and merchandise is just that and his fine art is well, his fine art.

Very Well put, simple and exact. You do not see much business acumen in many artists of this acclaim, unlike other artists for example Shepard who's work has spawned clothing, merchandise etc.. Kaws seems to have a very tight control over what takes place with his work and how it is marketed and distributed. Interesting to see this take place and how successful he has been with creating such a particular structure around his creative en devours.
how many artists know exactly where 80-90% of their work / fine art resides and with whom. Even in secondary market sales he stays inclusive. And although there is always a slough of opinions regarding every release, he does not just release items for the sake of releasing them, some may see many releases as redundant but much thought goes into approving a release be it a vinyl sculpture or cushion and the prices although expensive for some items are very well attributed to seeing a for sure sell out of any release.

KAWS also sells shirts, jackets, belts, bags... you name it. The difference between his stuff and Shep is the price.
Just my impression... Shep produces lots and wants the masses to have access to it. Wants to make money through volume. KAWS wants to cater to the wealthy and sells to the masses only so much that he thinks won't hurt his business with the wealthy.
I think they are slightly different strategies rather than drasticly different.

I think they are slightly different strategies rather than drasticly different. His clothing etc is under a different label that he is a part-owner of. He did that in a very clever way, only having one shop in Tokyo and then a very select number of retailers in certain cities. It's certainly more controlled. The price on most items is due to the quality being far higher than Obey's stuff. Except weirdly, the tees which are pretty poor for the price.

Original Fake KAWS Companion Cushion, by sal on Apr 24, 2012 11:27:57 GMT 1, I totally agree with everything stated here (reg his fine art and toys/merch)... the point of my post was definitely not that Kaws is stupid, quite opposite from that actually.. even if youre not a fan of his toys, merch, OriginalFake stuff, or his fine art, you gotta admit that he's got incredible sense for marketing, business, and PR..

I dont think we will ever see an abstract print release. A big part of the effect in person is the size and brightness of the canvas's which couldnt be re-created with a framed piece of paper, no matter the quality of the printing job.
