A tale of two cities: an analogy, by stringer64 on Jun 20, 2012 22:39:04 GMT 1, There's been a lot of talk over on thid side of the pond about the history of Punk and whether it began in London or New York. This has led me to thinking about Urban art as an analogy. Of course, the specifics have to be widened somewhat, but a similar argument can be made. This is a bit of fancy but I was wondering how other members felt about this analogy.
Just like the Godfathers of Punk were the Velvet underground and The Stooges, so the Godfathers of Urban Art could be seen in the Pop Art of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, hence the re-inventing of these ideas by recent British and American artists such as D'Face and Mr Brainwash. Also, as The Sex Pistol's could be seen as the quintessential Punk band, so British artist Banksy could be seen as the premier Urban artist of the movement. However, there is an argument that prior to the Pistols, bands such as The Ramones, The New York Dolls and Television were leading an alternative "Punk" movement in the States prior to the Sex pistols releasing a first single, so artists such as the Faile collective, Ron English, the NY graffiti artists and Shepard Fairey were leading an urban art movement in the US.
i could go on, but was just wondering if my analogy rang home for others on here.
