Glow under UV lighting ???, by Deleted on Jul 5, 2012 8:14:34 GMT 1, Bought something that glows under UV...
So I would like to know if any of you are using "UV blue light" (the one used in disco/bars/pubs, the safest one as per standard; not the one that kills bacteria or do CSI magic stuff).
It sound ridiculous, but I want to have a UV light on a framed print that automatically goes on when it's dark (I have the electrical circuit schema here with sensor or could use a timer-switch).
My question is:
Will blue-UV lighting fade my print in no time if you consider print will be under blue-UV lighting for 6 to 10 hours a day ?
Any idea ?

Glow under UV lighting ???, by nealmason1986 on Jul 5, 2012 8:36:46 GMT 1, You must be able to get glass or Perspex which will stop the harmful uv bleaching the photo.
UV rays are the rays which tab our skin or burn us so I would have thought those rays would deffinately damage a picture.
I know clubs use what they call black lights. I don't know if there is a difference between a UV light and a black light which they use in clubs but it would be worth googling.
Sorry I havnt produced any facts but that's just my ten sense worth :-p

Glow under UV lighting ???, by johnnyh on Jul 5, 2012 8:50:23 GMT 1, UV blacklight has a bleaching effect on inks etc so yes it will. However fluorescent inks are designed for blacklight so not a massive issue However if the print uses fluorescent paints either on there own or mixed with normal paints this is usual. The flourescent paint fades in normal sun light anyway and the more sun light it receives the quicker it fades. Normal paints fade under blacklight so in effect it is a dyeing print but they all are.
Ideally for what you want use as low as power and output as possible and ideally the led ones are best. Technically better if not in the frame as this reduces the exposure but will, look cool so may be worth it.
No idea how long it will last not sure there is a measure as this will depend on the paints and how reflective they are and the outputs both from the UV and from sunlight. There has been one or two shown on her in either latest buy prints thread or something
UV glass etc as high a protection as possible obviously with both sources as mentioned above

Glow under UV lighting ???, by confused2 on Jul 5, 2012 8:53:23 GMT 1, Good question...
I've just bought a piece by Carl Cashman on wood that's going up on the wall this weekend. Going to get myself a strip black light above the piece but it's only going to be turned on when I want it. The space I've got looked out is not the most accessible so I'm going to have to get it right first time!
Interested to see what advice you get regarding the print and light.

Glow under UV lighting ???, by jonti on Jul 5, 2012 9:37:25 GMT 1, Flouro lights emit very little uv, certainly less than the sun.
The glass on the "black" light acts as a filter which only allows a certain light wavelength to pass. That wavelength then reacts with the flourescent dye added to the ink in the picture.
I think !

Glow under UV lighting ???, by Deleted on Jul 5, 2012 9:44:10 GMT 1, @confused - I bought Cashman print from Ltd !
@nealmanson - Perspex too ? are you sure of that ? Googling... oh yes, just a bit "It filters ultraviolet (UV) light at wavelengths below about 300 nm (similar to ordinary window glass).
johnnyh - I thought exactly the same, would go 100% LED with low voltage or a bug zapper (wavelenght between 400 – 300 nm)
@nealmanson - Yep, real black light and light used in clubs are different. Real black light may be harmful to health and used for CSI stuff... light in clubs are more like bug-zapper and called fluorescent light but may work well too.
Thx

Glow under UV lighting ???, by johnnyh on Jul 5, 2012 13:01:35 GMT 1, Anyway you'll be bored of it and have replaced it before it fades. So make it look spanking and enjoy it
