old tin locksmiths sign with a rat on it, by bricky on Sept 25, 2007 17:45:17 GMT 1, hello, I'm new to this site; is there somewhere that sells/buys pieces of graffiti removed from the streets. Its just that I was doing a shop fit in an old locksmiths in Clerkenwell central London and the old tin A board sign was found in the back, which had a Banksy rat sprayed on it. The rat is hanging from the U in 'keys cut' it has a parachute on its back. 'Banksy' is sprayed at the top where it says 'this way for..' except someone has drawn a c**k and balls over the 'Banksy', its all pretty rusty. Is it collectable?
since trying to get used to this site I have removed most of the phallic marker pen, with some thinners.... though it worn away the 'Banksy' bit. I have no idea how to post photos, even though I read the instructions.[/img]

old tin locksmiths sign with a rat on it, by CR on Sept 25, 2007 18:22:41 GMT 1, i hereby rescind my offer of £50.
i'll give you £55!
seriously though, I don't think you are looking at big money for that. You cant get authntication for street pieces, which is ultimatly what this is regardless of where it was.
you my get lucky and get a few hundred from someone, but if I were you I would get framed and put it on the wall!

old tin locksmiths sign with a rat on it, by CR on Sept 25, 2007 18:36:14 GMT 1, I would keep hold of it if I were you dont go letting anyone buy it off you for a few hundred, coz you might find it on ebay again in six months for ten times as much
It might be on ebay silky but do you really think it would sell.
I am not saying anything about this piece, but we all know how easy it would be do make your own one on an old sign or on a battered old door!
with no provenance this sign isn't going to be making mega bucks!

Agreed you can't get authentication, but it hasn't stopped things like the What? news-stand, and the Blur door going for mega-money (over 200k each).
I know they're not anywhere in the same league as this guy's Keys Cut Rat, but I'm just pointing out that some street pieces have done alright for themselves without provenance.
There's a mildly comparable streetpiece to this guy's in the upcomming Sotheby's auction. It's listed at £20,000-£30,000 but how would anyone have got authentication for that either???

old tin locksmiths sign with a rat on it, by bricky on Sept 25, 2007 20:31:00 GMT 1, well its tough I went out on a call and came back to find the girl I'm staying with had thrown it out with the bin bags on the street and its not with the bin bags any more....she thought it was trash. Well easy come easy go, I'm so glad I spent half an hour gently removing that lovely cock and balls...
