Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by Gentle Mental on Oct 21, 2013 15:09:58 GMT 1, There are only 2 accounts: mine - gentlemental (the one i've been using for years.. ) and hf - that's the one the group use (cw+lynda+mike+zhao+joey etc) to avoid multiple account confusion etc the gang decided to share one account and workload.
The opinions posted on this thread are all from genuine forummers. Neither hf nor myself made them up.
And that includes johnnyh's.

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by mchang5 on Oct 26, 2013 5:43:26 GMT 1, I sort of like the idea but they seem poorly executed. Why can't zhao just add a couple of coats of paint so it doesn't seem like he was running out of paint or silkscreen over a painted canvas? e.g. paint the canvas white and then silk screen over it or paint on it or do whatever he's does... so it doesn't look so cheesy and cheap.
I'd probably buy it if the finish didn't seem so amateurish.

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by highly framable on Oct 26, 2013 10:01:27 GMT 1, there's a lot of paint! and other stuff on the canvases.
he makes his own taped filled screens on wobbly hand made frames, and used industrial paint instead of fine art ones.
he does a lot to the poor canvas and stops when he thinks it's done.
they're not refined at all. and neither is zhao...
apologies for the poor photos, the colours/textures are not obvious. the whites on pink on reds are all there. and yellows on white are clear in the photos...
will send closer shots if anyone wants some. email or pm!
BTW, "Unhappiness (on a nice day)" is now sold. thanks for the kind support!
thanks.

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by johnnyh on Dec 3, 2013 19:44:59 GMT 1, No ones interested as you just take the head from Yue Mins work screen it on to canvas and then put some paint on top badly if I may say. It's a bit like a kids colouring book except they colour in better.
They really are awful.

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by misterx on Dec 4, 2013 5:07:56 GMT 1, With johnny's ongoing bitterness I suspect this has nothing to do with him changing his mind...i think he's trying to change everybody else's minds regarding these pieces. Vendetta? johnny, I think the decent thing to do here would be to bow out gracefully rather than flogging your dead horse that is HF. Be nice. Think it, don't repeatedly keep saying it! You don't like 'em..fine. get over it and move on. Its what adults do.

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by johnnyh on Dec 4, 2013 5:54:30 GMT 1, Mister X you may love Gental sorry Zhao but I don't however that has nothing to do with these pieces. You can go back through all the Highly Frameable threads and take a look. Although I thought a lot of the releases not good I did not comment on them. Gental sorry Zhoa ha ha has obviously ran out of ideas so he has resorted to stealing other artists work. It is a forum for art I thought not copies and theft which seems to be happening more and more on the forum. So like WCP I have taken a bit of a stand against it and will continue to do so.
I am more than happy for Gental sorry Zhao to explain his artistic input into these but it is a Yue min head screen printed on to canvas and he colours on top sorry but that's it. Bit like screening the top of flying Copper and painting the face a diff colour and calling it original based on the fact you turned the smile upside down. So he is just putting paint on someone else's work. He posts it on the forum for comment and sales
re your adults remark think that might be better if you focused your derogatory comments on people who steal other peoples artistic work. Meanwhile if you do not want to read my comments don't
maybe more people should be worried about the amount of fakes and dodgy deals happening on the forum.

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Dec 4, 2013 7:56:07 GMT 1, Johny always like your posts and I can see where you're coming from, I think the WCP prints are shite house also. I am a big fan of yue minjins work also after seeing a few if his massive og's at te HK ar fair. Although... Zhoa hasn't copied the image completely, he's 'doctored' the image (the mouth is upside down) so not an exact copy, don't know what his mission is but I bought one of the early ones as I liked the image also, will I frame I don't know.
Take it easy fella more things to worry about in life.

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by johnnyh on Dec 4, 2013 8:45:12 GMT 1, Amended in that he turned the mouth upside down but this is acceptable because not many people see or know Yue Mins work in general. Where as I said if you did it with A Banksy what would the reaction be eg Happy Choppers with the bow upside dow and a red and white wash over it. People would say its crap which is the same really if you know Yue Mins work. Only if you know Yue Mins work can you actually notice the mouth is upside down. Not exactly original is it.
But as said on WCP I have no issue with people buying fakes, copies or tributes but they really should not be touted on here. People are welcome to buy what they like.
they should just do something original if they can but suspect that's they problem.
If you go back to his last release the hand grenade thing it was poor but I made no comment at all but lots of others did
cheers jeez us no worries

Banksy with Warhol, or all street art with Warhol for that matter. Not saying this is the same, but there is a long history and valid argument for artists commandeering other artists works and commenting through them. Turning the smile upside down in this case would seem to be valid, I'd imagine it's targeted at those who do in fact know Yue Mins work, which for a while was all pervasive.

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by johnnyh on Dec 4, 2013 8:59:51 GMT 1, Not sure what I am seeing should be regarded in that company at all. Banksy used the image of Kate Moss with munroe type hair. Eg he made his own Image and created his own piece. Yes done as a complete play on the Warhol Image but that's not the same as taking warhols marilyn or Mao turning the lips upside down and putting a colour wash over it. So think the two are quite different

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by Deleted on Dec 4, 2013 9:04:57 GMT 1, But you can see that Yue Mins super positive fake nervous smiling characters represent a fearful populace, maybe forced to smile.. and yet, he's become a celebrity off the back of it. So turning the smile upside down, is a valid way to question his motive for continuing with these characters... that now, maybe, they really are laughing, all the way to the bank.
Not saying that's the case, but would seem to be the reason for painting it upside down.

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by johnnyh on Dec 4, 2013 9:11:01 GMT 1, Yes but you can use that excuse with anything.
Eg I release Banksy a Flying Copper with the smiley face smile upside down saying not the same as before as people not as happy now due to poorer E's and a worse economy.
Rats tail turned down to signify people's unhappiness. Etc etc etc
Ps the Chinese populace is much happier now than when this was done

Not saying that's the case, but would seem to be the reason for painting it upside down. OMG Nuart you took the words right out of zhao's mouth!
here's his statement on the series:
zhao: "Yue's smile is a political one. A โๆ ๅฅโkind of smile ๏ผ produced from one's lack of options in life. As in China, there are forces way beyond, above and over one's head. And his smiles broke grounds. Created a genre, placed Chinese art onto the world stage. Also, they broke sales record time and again. Raking in millions from the very people who corrupt and oppress, the very people that forced that smile on Yue's face. Yet, Yue, and his contempoaries carry on - his nervous smile, the formula now, as it is with most contemporary Chinese art, feels inveresed. Looking at the price tags, their pop star lifestyles, their political affliation, their willingness to tow the party's line - their smiles now feels genuinely, greedily happy. And the unhappiness (the forced smiles, the sad eyes of zhang xiaogang, the masks of zhen fangzhi etc), the once masked and hidden, and powerfully political, seem fake. As these are."
thanks Nuart! Great observation!

Rats tail turned down to signify people's unhappiness. Etc etc etc Ps the Chinese populace is much happier now than when this was done It's an interesting and important debate I think. Rats tails don't signify happiness and Flying Copper isn't an all pervasive image in our culture, but yeah, that idea of yours would work. Flying copper does pretty much the same as the Zhao already. This culture was originally built on this idea of Detournement, a Situationist concept of turning powerful capitalist icons against themselves, it's been common since the 50's and in art I guess since Duchamp added a mustache to the Mona Lisa. I think we've kinda got lost in all the print flipping nonsense and pretty pictures the last years. If Zhao's imagery, and I'm not saying it's good or bad..generates debate and makes anyone check out Situationism or the link below, or question Art/Politics in China (in general) then job done no ?
and all for ยฃ75 !
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C3%A9tournement
PS : The real action starts when the Zhao's start going for big bucks.. lol

Zhao ๐ธ๐ฌ Print Release โข Show News โข Art For Sale, by johnnyh on Dec 4, 2013 9:50:31 GMT 1, I very much doubt it and your detournament argument just does not cut it really it's just being an excuse for stealing some one else's work in this case. It's not in relevant or in anyway reflect art / politics in China.
Just a load of copy written bull to justify the copying of some ones work. Sounds the same as an advert for cigarettes we know it's crap but still sells the health benefit pswonder which agency wrote Gental sorry Zhao's justification
