The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by fingerz on Jul 20, 2012 14:44:42 GMT 1, mental
A gunman reportedly wearing a gas mask and body armour has opened fire at a midnight showing of the new Batman film in Denver, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens of others.
The trailers had just finished at the packed screening of The Dark Knight Rises when the attack happened at the Century Aurora 16 Movie Theatre in a mall in the suburb of Aurora, according to reports. Earlier, police had said at least 14 people were killed.
Police have said a suspect - named in US media reports as 24-year-old James Holmes - is in custody.
A six-year-old child is reportedly among the dead, while it is thought a three-month-old baby was injured.
Brenda Stuart, from 850 KOA Radio, told Sky News: "This started with a midnight showing of the new Dark Knight movie and the theatres were packed that were showing this movie.
"People inside tell us they thought it was part of the movie. They heard what they thought were firecrackers, loud bangs and all of a sudden they saw the bullets flying.
"Police officers are carting the injured to the hospital in their own cars, not waiting for the ambulances."
According to witnesses, the gunman also set off a smoke or tear gas bomb.
Paul Otermat was in the cinema with his girlfriend when the shooting started. He said he walked calmly into the cinema, threw a gas canister and began firing without saying anything.
He told Sky News: "A man walked through an emergency exit. I thought it was some sort of publicity stunt for a second there and then he threw tear gas into the crowd.
"He started firing shots into the crowd. We ducked down me and my girlfriend and dragged out of the theatre to a point where we were out of the view of the shooter. We ran through the lobby and we heard more shots and ran into the parking lot and got into our car and drove off."
One Twitter user claimed her sister was inside the cinema when the shooting began.
Fuey Saechao tweeted: "People were arguing and a Mazed was thrown, the room got Smokey and she heard like 15 gunshots. She thought it was a joke when she seen a guy with a gun until people started screaming in pain. She got down for 20 seconds and he was gone. Everyone started running out."
The gunman was armed with one rifle and two handguns, the Denver Post has reported. Some of those injured were in an adjacent cinema and the bullets are believed to have travelled through an intervening wall.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by Deleted on Jul 20, 2012 15:43:02 GMT 1, indeed, very sad, I was completely shocked by hearing this. In a cinema? Why?
Being in the States now for a while and talking to people about this brings another sad topic. I'll try to explain it, but please don't feel attacked, keep in mind I'm not a native speaker and I don't want to insult, or judge, anyone.
Ok here we go: Talking about this massacre to people around here was surprising. Of course, everyone is horrified by what happened. In the train to work this morning I saw a lady talking about this with her kids, in tears. But, on the other hand, there seems to be some kind of acceptation or understanding as in "sadly, these things happen here". I'm surprised that is the underlying emotion in stead of, for instance, what can we do about things like this?
I don't want to debate or anything about this, it's just an observation I made this morning that I'd wanted to share as I don't understand it. Maybe I've just come across the wrong people and is the group I spoke today not representative at all.
I probably choose the wrong words in acceptation and understanding, but I can't come up with anything better at the moment.
If anyone wants me to remove this message, feel free to pm me.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by gwhit on Jul 20, 2012 16:08:07 GMT 1, Its only an opinion mate, nothing wrong with that.
Sadly living with guns you dont make things easy , acceptance i guess is due to partly the fact that people realise there are crazies out there with fairly easy access to guns, what is going to happen? Look at the previous President for instance . another loon with huge weapons

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by mmmike on Jul 20, 2012 18:26:14 GMT 1, There are a lot of crazy people out there. You have to be crazy to think guns have any place in a civilized society.
And on a side note who brings a 6 year old to see batman?

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by kultur on Jul 20, 2012 18:43:51 GMT 1, Speaking as an American... guns don't kill people... people kill people. The right to bear arms is in our Constitution - and before you think I am a NRA member, I do not have any guns.
The movie is PG-13 so it isnt that strange to bring a 6 year old... I am not sure I personally would but who knows. It could be one of those kids that wouldn't stop hounding you. Now a 6 year old seeing a 3 hour movie starting at midnight - that is something to question.

Schools, Cinames,... What a sick world! You'll find this sick people all over the world, but it's way to easy to get a gun in the US and come on, i really love your constitution but the times where you have to defend your Democracy with weapons are over.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by kultur on Jul 20, 2012 19:25:18 GMT 1, These people are smart - and crazy. Apparently this guy has booby trapped his entire apartment. What are you going to do... ban everything... such as household items that can be used to build bombs? There is no end when you start making rules for the general public based on a few crazy people. You can kill people with bows and arrows or crossbows or knives - so lets ban them all. Putting things so simplistic - as just getting rid of guns - it just isn't so simple and hopefully will never happen.
Get rid of the politicians first... and then we can talk!

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by djcuthbertson on Jul 20, 2012 19:51:39 GMT 1, I doubt he could have shot 60 people with a crossbow or a bow. I think he would have had a hard time stabbing that number with a knife also. There are crazy people everywhere and this happens all over the world, but in the U.S. it happens a lot more frequently. The problem is the kind of guns that are available and how easy it is to obtain one. Having a shotgun or rifle for hunting is one thing, but nobody needs an assualt rifle or a pistol with a 20 round magazine. When the constitution was written they used muskets. It is a living document that has changed with the time so to say gun control is unconstitutional is idiotic. By the way. I am an American and I own a gun but I am for more gun control.

That guns don't kill people bull is one of many mindless slogan that are so popular in the US. The same stupid argument could be made for land mines. If guns were not manufactured and outlawed there would be fewer people killed.
As for the constitution, get over it. It is an amendment to a document that is quite dated. The section was added to ensure the states right to have well armed militias as a check on the federal government not to protect gun nuts and manufacturers.
One could make a compelling argument that one persons right to arms directly conflicts with the preamble of the constitution as it hinders others ability to live safely.

Guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people is probably more apt.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by Wearology on Jul 20, 2012 21:34:45 GMT 1, As an American I feel that way too many people have guns. Whenever a massacre like this happens no one ever talks about where and why a 24 year old guy was able to get 3 guns a bullet proof vest a gas mask and enough explosives to blow up a city block. No one also asks why someone would bring a 9 month old infant to a violent 12:01 AM movie either.

I havent read the whole thread, so apolgies if this p[oint has been made before. I appreciate that the US constitution gives the right to arms. But that is a historical document. It mayhave been right then, but it isnt now. Just like the monarchy here used to be able to veto bills of parliament. That right technically still exists but no monarch would ever dare - it would cause a constitutional crisis, that would result in the right being removed from the monarchy. I cant understand why a similar attitude cannot be taken to the right to arms in the US constitution - that its historic only. If guns are readily available, they will be used. One only has to look at the shootings per capita in the UK and compare it with the US. Ban guns - simple. And watch Moore's Bowling for Columbine. Finally, RIP those that have died in this tragedy.

I think I would want a gun for protection. When push comes to shove I can hardly think of someone that wouldn't want a gun for protection.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by Deleted on Jul 20, 2012 22:24:54 GMT 1, Kultur, your way of arguing annoys me. mmmike and coach come up with clear examples and points of view, you completely ignore those in your replies, but put their words in to extremes in which they are clearly not intended, as you probably understand as well.
Do I understand that you are willing to accept the presence of semi-automatic guns in our daily lives for protection? I grew up in the Netherlands, and the only gun I have ever seen were from policemen. This probably goes for 90% of people in western europe. Therefore, no one feels the need to protect themselves with the use of guns.
Do you think you would be as scared of the world as you are now when you would know the chance that someone would attack you with a gun is nihil as you are now? Indeed, I assume you are scared as that is the only logical explanation I can come up with. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I truly hope you won't. I believe the United States are a great country, but the anxiety for things that are new and progressive in some people is mindblowing.
Kultur, your way of arguing annoys me. mmmike and coach come up with clear examples and points of view, you completely ignore those in your replies, but put their words in to extremes in which they are clearly not intended, as you probably understand as well.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by mmmike on Jul 20, 2012 22:43:14 GMT 1, Eliminating alcohol will save lives too! What is your point? Ban cars too... they kill more people than anything I think I would want a gun for protection. When push comes to shove I can hardly think of someone that wouldn't want a gun for protection. To add to Love's point... Banning guns will not stop all killing but it is a start and you are a fool if you think eliminating guns won't save lives. That being the case why would anyone want to guns in our society in this day n age?
The difference between guns and the examples you gave is there is value in the others.
Protection? You wouldn't need guns to protect you if no one had them. Even in a world with guns there have been study after study that show people with guns are less safe and more likely to use them on themselves, family and friends. You are giving yourself a false sense of security if you think a gun or guns make you safer.

Kultur, to put it bluntly you're an idiot. I don't need or want a gun for protection - I do just fine without one but then again I don't live in a state of perpetual fear and I guess that is where the problem lies nicely packaged up as your constitutional right ready to be put forward as a reason to have one.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by kultur on Jul 20, 2012 22:51:20 GMT 1, Why don't you read again for anything that isnt clear.
To me banning guns is as extreme as what I suggested. To say the Constitution is old and irrelevant is simply beyond stupid.
If you were in a life threatening situation and had the choice of a gun or no gun to save your life. Say someone is about to hit you or threatened your family for some reason- everyone around the world I am sure has dealt with a threatening situation at some time. I doubt anyone would say no guns... I am glad there are no guns ... let my family die because guns kill people.
BTW I would also say that all of the guns I have seen were by policemen also. Maybe a little cultural relativism thinking would help - all american kids are not given guns to play with in their crib. Where the hell do people see guns all the time in the US?
I am scared... scared of people with your thinking that assume I am scared in daily life and see guns all day long. And as for your comment that Americans are afraid of new things... well that is just the tip of the comedy iceberg for me.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by eschiff on Jul 20, 2012 23:18:27 GMT 1, i'm american, though have been living in the UK for the last 5 years (and about to get my dual citizenship!) and i have to say, the right to bear arms has absolutely no logical application in today's world.
as other's have mentioned, shotguns/rifles for hunting/skeet shooting/etc is fine, but the fact that american can buy assault rifles and handguns is just fucking wrong and stupid.
yes there is plenty of knife crime here in the UK, and we all know the unfortunate situation in Norway that happened recently, but when there's shooting in other countries it's an outlier, in the US it's just fucking Tuesday.
And kultur, you sound like you're hoping someone attacks your family so you can blow them away. it's sad.

I certainly would not want or need a gun for protection, but there lies the difference between the rights to have guns in the US and the lack of the same rights in the UK. The constitutional right to bare arms in America, only leads those who wouldn't otherwise need a gun, to have one to protect themselves against others who also have the right. I understand that you may want to protect your rights, but personally I prefer to live in a country which does not give me and more importantly to me others that right. It may be a case of protecting the constitution of rights, but when protecting that right may take away somebody else's ultimate right to life, maybe it is a time to look which is the more important right.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by kultur on Jul 20, 2012 23:31:53 GMT 1, How many times do I have to tell people to read.
I do not have/ own a gun.
This is the kind of mentality where people think that all Muslims are terrorists (can you believe it?) You can buy guns in Norway - even after what happened. Go talk to them.
Given a possible situation where my life or my families well-being was threatened... by whatever means for whatever reason... I would wish i had a gun for protection. I think most people would in that moment.
I am sorry for the senseless loss of life in this tragedy which could happen anywhere in the world - yes even where you live as wherever you live I bet you can buy a gun given enough money and determination.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by eschiff on Jul 20, 2012 23:52:50 GMT 1, of course, but in the states you need a drivers license and that's it...pretty significant difference i would say.
and sure, if my life or families was threatened i'd want to protect it. the difference, as someone mentioned, is only in america would that happen with a gun.
there's just absolutely no defense for semi-automatic/automatic guns and handguns. none.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by Wearology on Jul 21, 2012 1:24:58 GMT 1, I just saw on TV that the killer graduated top of his class from a very prestigious school University of California majoring in Neuroscience. He was from a upper middle class family in San Diego and purchased all 3 gins legally over the past year. He was going for his PHD until Last month when something must have made him snap. The authorities can't even get into his apartment because the whole place is booby trapped and he also left his apartment with his radio on full blast with techno music on a Continuous real. He dyed his hair red and when he was arrested the cop asked him his name and he said he was the Joker. He bought a ticket and reserved a front row seat. He than propped open the exit door went ro his car and got out a AK 47 assault rifle and another rifle he waited until the movie started and than went on the stage and threw tear gas into the crowd he got 50 shots off and than when he was out of bullets he went to his seat and got a hand gun that he tape to the bottom of the seat and continued to shoot people.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by Wearology on Jul 21, 2012 1:33:17 GMT 1, He had on a full body armor suit from head to toe with a gas mask and a bullet proof vest. He was prepared for war. All the journalists in America seemed to really like the movie but one popular movie critic said it wasn't very good and that critic has received death threats from multiple individuals. There is also the negative political tone of this movie because the main bad guy coincidentally is named Bain which is the name of the company Obama's political rival used to run. People news to learn to separate fantasy from reality.

The Dark Knight Rises massacre, by Happy Shopper on Jul 21, 2012 10:00:58 GMT 1, It would probably be near impossible to make guns illegal in the US. Just too many of them out there now! But you'd think they'd have some kind of register of who owns what, and if someone buys 4 powerful guns and 6000 rounds of ammunition something would flag it up !! Seems there's no regulation at all. At least in Europe when someone goes nuts they have to go to a special effort to cause mayhem. In the US it's made far to easy! And on the subject of guns as personal defense; how many Americans carry guns on them at all times ? I have a feeling it's not even legal (!?), so how often is it ever a useful law !?

Seriously how can anyone defend the right to gun ownership after an atrocity like this, surely the facts speak for themselves?!
RIP to all those in Colorado.
