By flipping you mean buying and selling, that is what galleries do, no? It's called the secondary market!

Two new failes on outerborough, by jboy on Oct 1, 2007 21:51:11 GMT 1, Its just weird how some have no issues buying from galleries, but wont buy off people on ebay when technically its the same thing. I understand if the gallery commissions a piece or the artist does a one off for them, but some of these were released at the last faile release and are already ยฃ300 more.
I think when flippers get referred to you should consider all those galleries as well. Im not mentioning any names, but i think we know the ones.
Places like stolenspace (sell their own artists prints) and POW (print their artists prints) as do SOS are probably the only exception, the rest are flippers IMO.
Just an observation

Seems to me that a lot of the "galleries" are simply individuals with a website...

I agree. I think it is very obvious who the full-time genuine galleries are against those websites which have been cheaply set-up by individuals who have simply bought too much art in the past (typically everything POW was selling) and who need to sell to pay off their credit cards.

Two new failes on outerborough, by endtimes on Oct 2, 2007 3:04:02 GMT 1, If it's a gallery that nurtures new artists and the art scene, and puts on shows and puts blood sweat and tears into it all that's great I don't mind supporting them. If it's agallery that sucks up all the hot new releases and lists them on their site for double the next week, then they're flippers pretending to be a gallery.

Two new failes on outerborough, by jonpud on Oct 2, 2007 11:08:28 GMT 1, Please don't neg me for this but I am struggling with the whole Faile scene! I don't get it, I don't understand why people like it so much! There is obviously a deeper meaning to the work, some historical pedigree that explains the work but if there is I can't find it!? Can anyone help me out here! Whats it all about? Jeeez I feel naive and ignorant!

Interesting that you have yet to receive a reply to this one Jon. I had this conversation with a good friend last night. I respect his opinions on art and wanted to know what it is he liked about Faile, because I too don't get excited by their work. He explained his reasons, but I would be interested to hear some other forum members opinions. You shouldn't be getting neg'd either Jon, you've made a fair point.

Two new failes on outerborough, by Johnston America on Oct 2, 2007 12:53:29 GMT 1, for me a lot of it is just enjoying the imagery hanging on my wall, nothing more than that.. like some kind of dark comic book cover meets playboy..
but even beyond that, aside from this last release you could get a handfinished print (and some of them are so unique they should be originals, with heavy layers of paint, an incredible amount of hand detailing) for a run of 8, or 12, or even 15 - for the same cost as you'd pay for a flat color run of 300 or 500 from other artists.. if you haven't seen one in person, it may be hard to appreciate how "hand done" these are -
just my .02

Two new failes on outerborough, by dave313perry on Oct 2, 2007 13:02:59 GMT 1, I also miss the significance in Faile's work to warrant such prieces - To me they are simply a montage of images, not even created by themselves which they manipulate crudely in photoshop and compile in a rustic fashion.
I appreciate the finished product of their work is quite bold and sometimes looks quite nice and gives a good impact, but i 'faile' (excuse the pun) to see any debth in their method - very limited skill and artistic talent.
I also had this conversation with a few people in the art and design business who agreed. I think i must be missing a trick!!!
Again i view it as - could i replicate it easily - and the answer is yup, i think so

Two new failes on outerborough, by jipsy on Oct 2, 2007 13:04:06 GMT 1, You shouldn't worry about being neg'd just for expressing an opinion Jonpud (I know it happens). I agree, Faile doesn't work for me, the cartoon illustration style just does nothing for me visually or emotionally but it obviously does for thousands of others. It may be the lack of sincerity in their work maybe I should loosen up a bit. No right or wrong here, eh?

Two new failes on outerborough, by stuey09 on Oct 2, 2007 13:09:36 GMT 1, In fairness, I have to say that when I collected a Faile piece for a forum member, I had to appreciate the excellent quality of the work. But on the whole, I couldn't justify the cost against my feelings for their images. I dare say, though, that I have work on my walls that some people (including my wife) think is rubbish. It is simply a matter of diverse opinions.

Maybe you need to see the work in the flesh. The prints are ok, but the canvases are truly hot. I can understand if you don't like em though. But if you get a chance to see one of their shows. You should really get there and then decide.
