Two new failes on outerborough, by scavos on Oct 2, 2007 13:30:49 GMT 1, I'm not a huge Faile fan either but really do like the two Captivating and Bunny Girl prints that were really cheap and up on POW for ages (gone now though). They're clean and simple images with the contrast of the snarling Faile dog and beautiful woman with butterfly in one and the odd erotica (could just be me) of the girl with pink bunny. (Yeah - just me on that one ;D). The expression on the bunny's face cracks me up. I have to admit that many of the other images I've seen just look like comic covers and I was never really that into comics. I admire their skills in illustration though. [- just read Dave's comment - I didn't know they just completely lifted other images ] I actually much prefer Aiko's new solo work ... banksyforum.proboards82.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=1191279580

Two new failes on outerborough, by jon0 on Oct 2, 2007 14:27:00 GMT 1, i've also never understood the Faile hoo-haa.. but as someone above rightly said- its about personal taste. I really loved the Bunny girl up on the street in Shoreditch a year or so back-- but i don't go for the prints myself.
but then I like Obey- which others roast so each to their own i guess.

Two new failes on outerborough, by bobbymeachamjr on Oct 2, 2007 14:29:26 GMT 1, I am just responding to the "could i replicate easily" comment - are you not a banksy fan either then because he's the easiest to do of them all?
I also miss the significance in Faile's work to warrant such prieces - To me they are simply a montage of images, not even created by themselves which they manipulate crudely in photoshop and compile in a rustic fashion. I appreciate the finished product of their work is quite bold and sometimes looks quite nice and gives a good impact, but i 'faile' (excuse the pun) to see any debth in their method - very limited skill and artistic talent. I also had this conversation with a few people in the art and design business who agreed. I think i must be missing a trick!!! Again i view it as - could i replicate it easily - and the answer is yup, i think so

The content of Banksy's images are political - thought provocative - sprayed in very specific areas on some occasions - all adding to the genious, and although some of his images are adopted and borrowed he changes the meanings of the images, where as i feel Faile just 'cut and paste'...dont you think???

Two new failes on outerborough, by jonpud on Oct 2, 2007 14:46:19 GMT 1, Wow, this is what it's all about, objective opinion by people who care and have individual interpretation on art! Also apreciate that members have realized that I asked a genuine question and that I was in no way slagging off the artist or individuals taste in art!
I feel I aught to address each of your opinions in turn!

Two new failes on outerborough, by jonpud on Oct 2, 2007 14:51:40 GMT 1, for me a lot of it is just enjoying the imagery hanging on my wall, nothing more than that.. like some kind of dark comic book cover meets playboy.. but even beyond that, aside from this last release you could get a handfinished print (and some of them are so unique they should be originals, with heavy layers of paint, an incredible amount of hand detailing) for a run of 8, or 12, or even 15 - for the same cost as you'd pay for a flat color run of 300 or 500 from other artists.. if you haven't seen one in person, it may be hard to appreciate how "hand done" these are - just my .02 I accept your opinion that they are very individual (almost unique) and for that reason alone they could be worth owning!? BUT surely art has to please the eye or change your mood or emotion, this does neither to me! I feel your comment that dark comic book cover meets playboy is a great description of this type of art! Nice one!

Two new failes on outerborough, by jonpud on Oct 2, 2007 14:59:36 GMT 1, Please don't neg me for this but I am struggling with the whole Faile scene! I don't get it, I don't understand why people like it so much! There is obviously a deeper meaning to the work, some historical pedigree that explains the work but if there is I can't find it!? Can anyone help me out here! Whats it all about? Jeeez I feel naive and ignorant! If you don't like something or don't understand why do you care??? Don't force yourself... just because other do??? Just my 2p. Motor, If I didn't care I wouldn't spend time on here, I would be doing something else that I cared more about!! I am not forcing myself to like it, either you do or you don't in the art world, I would not buy something just becauase others do and to be part of the 'scene' It is because I care about art and the way it affects people that I am asking the question, I do not understand the reason's behind the art and I would like to further my own knowledge and understanding through the opinions of others! Hope this helps to explain why I asked the question in the first place!

Two new failes on outerborough, by jonpud on Oct 2, 2007 15:02:58 GMT 1, Faile's street work is magic, and one of the reasons street art has made it into galleries and our homes is because of the work these guys have done over the past 10 years. Not seen much of the street work, but again, whats it trying to say or is it simply decoration!?

GWB or CWSB for example, what again does Faile mean!?

Two new failes on outerborough, by motor on Oct 2, 2007 15:11:54 GMT 1, Hey Jonpud, understand and I respect what you saying... It's just sometimes I am puzzled by some questions posted here... As of Faile it is like page from the book telling you a part of the story surrounded with big mystery around it. Thus it makes you wonder what's happening and it's leaving the interpretation up to you. Using contrast of beauty and the beast most of the time. No political massage, just a poetic story. Not to mention the great craftsmanship going into their work. Love it

The prints are ok, but the canvases are truly hot. I can understand if you don't like em though. But if you get a chance to see one of their shows. You should really get there and then decide.
Thanks endtimes for the link, yeah all very pretty, skilled workmanship, BUT, so is the front cover of a Spiderman comic! Sorry mate but just don't get it!!

Instead of talking about it here in the ebay section, I started a thread on the Faile forum about it if you'd like to browse or join in. Cheers J, good idea, will take a look mate! Lots of Faile fans on here as well so just thought I would ask!
Just to add though, I didn't become a member of the Faile forum because before now it has never inspired me to look at the work in any depth! Also after joining the Micallef forum I found that more was talked about on here than on there, Banksy is only a common factor on here, truth is we all love all types of art, if it was Banksy and Banksy only I beleive we would be on here for all the wrong reasons!!!!

Two new failes on outerborough, by slowmo on Oct 2, 2007 15:38:05 GMT 1, Faile stuff is cool, one of it's major messages appears to be of loss and the insecurity that comes from the loneliness that follows. There are also themes that love is painful and not always what you might hope it to be. Also that loneliness can be as a result of other people influencing your life.
The way it is presented enables you to very quickly get a grip on these emotions, the comic book presentation can easily make you think the work is shallow, but in fact there is often a lot more depth to the work than you would think.
They don't stop there though,so much more to them, I find it amazing how many themes are covered when they use and juxtapose so many of the same images, but get completely different feelings from them on different pieces of work.
Brian Sewell esque evaluation over, they look awesome in the flesh, really pleasing on the eye

Two new failes on outerborough, by gozgoz on Oct 2, 2007 17:34:56 GMT 1, I think you guys who dont like faile should take a hold of one to have a look at. its brilliant how almost every print is different because they are all customised by hand, like david choe's prints. So it feels very original.
Also, come to the faile board, there's a whole section dedicated to their works and theres a lot of pics up there. maybe that will help.
maybe we can start a thread on BAST too because ive no idea what he's banging on about. (even though evil J just convinced me and twisted and put a gun to my head to buy a print of his and I did fearing for my life. )
What does it for me also is the fact that Faile just arent very in-your-face with a political message/agenda, and i think motor really hit the nail by talking abt loneliness and alienation. i think a lot of that comes through in their work AND its very subtle. Thats the reason why i dont like Micallef. its too IN -YOUR-FACE-IM ANTI CAPITALIST ANTI WAR ANTI GUNS LOOK AT ALL MY CORPORATE BIG COMPANY LOGOS style art. I like things subtle.
I also think that they are one of the few artist who have actually have been able to translate the STREET feel onto paper. You know how you walk along the streets and see wheatpasted adverts layered over one another and how after wear and tear they form images of their own? Well, Faile latched onto that idea and have incorporated that by mixing and matching a lot of their images, coming up with very ingenious new creations (Savage Encounters being a good example), by well positioned "tears".

Two new failes on outerborough, by mainartery on Oct 3, 2007 1:22:35 GMT 1, The Faile work is a social comment, it always has lots of reference points and symbolism - you could easily post rationalize a faile print but i bet the context is there from the beginning. The most recent print i've bought is by an exciting new artist called Hush (Opus Underground) is selling his new work at the minute, he also seems to come from the Faile idealism and at first the image seems to be just a image but you look at the symbols and can tell that the artists comment has been well thought of, very nice work.
Just my opinion boys - new to this collecting lark but am liking it.

Two new failes on outerborough, by skanky on Oct 3, 2007 13:23:25 GMT 1, Good discussion, pesonally I dont think art has to have a meaning pushed in your face . I am a huge Faile fan and love the images used in their work, sometimes its good to have work that just pleases the eye. As for lifting and re working images being a problem I dont think that ever affected Warhol. I like the torn effect and agree with the comment that they do like to work with beauty and the beast. They do have some deep and political pieces one of my favourites is this PDX , you cant see from the picture but it is newspaper cuttings regarding the troubles in Israel , Palestine and the Lebanon. The usual message that appears with the Butterfly Girl is will I ever find love. Total class !

Two new failes on outerborough, by motor on Oct 3, 2007 13:29:58 GMT 1, Skunky love it! + That is one of my most wanted pieces and I still regret not buying it. Yes, Faile can be political sometimes/big time-just look at the last year Baltic Show/ however I don't think that's the main thing for them-and that is one of the reasons why I like them that much. ;D

Two new failes on outerborough, by mp on Oct 3, 2007 16:25:39 GMT 1, I love Faile and always have since I first saw their work. One of the main things that appeals to me about them is that they truly feel like one of the strong artistic voices of my generation here in the US. The images they create and ones they use in their work are iconic and stand out to me as significant moments I remember growing up. Even in using the year 1986 on all of their work is a statement, as it really is one of those years that influenced my generation so greatly I will never forget it for the rest of my life.
On top of that, their craftsmanship is amazing. After purchasing my first work of theirs earlier this year, I haven't been able to stop since. I feel the same way about David Choe. The minute I saw his work in the flesh, I was blown away and have been doing everything I can to get my hands on more of it.
So, to any Faile fans out there or anyone that purchased from the recent release and doesn't like what they bought, I already posted this on the Faile board, but if you have a Heartbreak in Brooklyn (preferably green), Rampage, Master of Love and Fate (colorful edition) or Savage Encounters that you're interested in parting with then let's talk.
