Stop the flippers?, by rustyb on Oct 3, 2007 14:07:33 GMT 1, Ha, I can see it now, we should all set up another eBay account, and bid up every Banksy and Micallef that comes on sale, if we don't think its a genuine sale

Stop the flippers?, by Deleted on Oct 3, 2007 14:33:48 GMT 1, i dont know how many if any of the recent micallef auctions have been wrecked, but i am guessing that the majoity of people who did this missed out on a print. why not just spend your time f5ing in the hope that some cancelled orders pop up instead?. it is frustrating having to pay over the odds on stuff, but without the secondary market i wouldnt have any of the stuff i have currently on my walls. There is so much cool art out there, original canvases going for less than the costs of some mass produced prints, spend your life looking for those instead of wrecking auctions.

Stop the flippers?, by sputnikeye on Oct 3, 2007 14:36:31 GMT 1, I went looking for Dzama prints and found a place that would sell for $700 a print from the Dracula series. It felt good after finding that...

Stop the flippers?, by paradoxia on Oct 3, 2007 17:20:29 GMT 1, Yes that is a strategy but you will kill off auctions for the normal people who can't f5 f5 f5 all day and actually HAVE to use eBay for items they missed etc.... as all the flippers will do is just put the items on BIN (Buy It Now) with immediate payment required as people do with all the mobile phone auctions now because of foreign bidders trying to scam people.

Stop the flippers?, by Daniel Silk on Oct 3, 2007 17:56:04 GMT 1, Ha, I can see it now, we should all set up another eBay account, and bid up every Banksy and Micallef that comes on sale, if we don't think its a genuine sale
You could then actually be doing them a favour coz you could bid it up to a much higher price than it would have been and they then sell it to the second bidder
I really dont think its good for anyone if people started messing up auctions on mass could upset the whole art market very bad idea

yeah, it'd be a laugh though.

Stop the flippers?, by paradoxia on Oct 3, 2007 18:01:20 GMT 1, I would rather take my chances with an auction and win it at say low £500-£600 mark than everyone moving onto BIN's of £800+

Stop the flippers?, by lesbianwednesdays on Oct 3, 2007 18:40:53 GMT 1,
that article is hardly relevant, afterall they're talking about tickets for scheduled events that are valid for a finite period up until commencement of said event.
i don't see how that can translate to the art market or even what purpose it serves? i totally begrudge flippers inflating the secondary market after already having prevented one genuine buyer an opportunity. there does need to be resale to keep things alive so we don't want to kill it off. sadly i think all we can do is avoid the BIN auctions and bid to what we feel is a fair price.
it's fundamentally the panic buyers that are giving the flippers a market and perpetuating the whole cycle, maybe if people were stronger and a bit more cute if they do decide to go to ebay after they miss out then the situation wouldn't be anywhere near as bad.

Stop the flippers?, by Dead Elvis on Oct 4, 2007 0:42:48 GMT 1, I posted a comment similar to this as a joke...didn't think it was actually happening. If you don't want to see inflated prices, then don't bid. Simple as that. I don't have the luxury of sitting around on a computer all day, but I also have enough sense not to pay 6K USD for a screen print or 15K for a silly litho...

Stop the flippers?, by endtimes on Oct 4, 2007 23:32:06 GMT 1, Word! That's what I always said. Flippers wouldn't exist if there weren't tons of idiots who were willing to pay stupid prices for the "hottest" new prints. Nobody is forcing anyone to buy these "flipped" prints. It's going to be painful for the flippers and the people who paid top dollar to the flippers when this stuff goes out of high fashion. We're starting to see it now, saw some guy who got burnt on his Mantis print. Faile and Insect prints are also hard to flip for mega profits anymore unless it's the most sought after images. Neate too. Micallef... I think prices on his stuff is going tobe shifting around too.
Although I will admit. When Trolleys hits ebay... there's going to be tons of idiots paying stupid prices for that print
