Hinging/mounting a Murakami foil print, by sal on Sept 12, 2012 23:55:12 GMT 1, Im planning on float mount framing my Murakami prints these days, and I can't decide which kind of hinging tapes to use for it?! I have Abaca.sa Hinging Tape, Gummed Paper Tape, and Japanese paper with wheat starch, but since these prints are on foil and not "average" paper, Im not sure which of those would work best!? Does anyone have any experience with these?! I tend to believe that Abaca.sa tape could be removed safely and easily from the glossy foil such as that one, but I have nothing to back that up, or to test it.
Any suggestions, tips, ideas are more than welcome..
Thank you!

Hinging/mounting a Murakami foil print, by sal on Sept 13, 2012 12:31:04 GMT 1, got same advice on another board, so will use the same answer I wrote there - I totally understand your point, and if I had a choice, I'd do it.. but, when I asked local frames about their methods and archival methods, they had no idea what Im on about... actually, when I asked about acid free mat boards, they thought Im being anal and making up things... as far as I know, there is NO archival quality framer around here, so I'd rather do my very best than let someone else do even more damage to it...

Hinging/mounting a Murakami foil print, by Rsyok on Sept 13, 2012 14:09:16 GMT 1, Hey Sal, when your refering to the prints as foil the metallic ones are just on paper as the others. The metallic finish isnt on the back is it ? The paper stock will take a hinge to float but unless your really good the piece will 'wave' a bit. I personally think they look good with just a spacer but its up to you...
(from Perrotin show) 'Johhny Royale' has got a round print floated pretty flat but not a diy job.

Hinging/mounting a Murakami foil print, by Deleted on Sept 13, 2012 14:31:53 GMT 1, Hey Sal, it's about time
May 2011 - urbanartassociation.com/index.cgi?board=framing&action=display&thread=67049
As said there and said above, foil is only on the front side, backside is a standard giclee print
So I used Lineco Abaca.sa Paper Hinging Tape (150') as it seems this tape is especially made for giclee print.
"Abaca.sa Self-Adhesive Hinging Tape incorporates the strength and supple nature of Abaca paper (manila hemp), along with a very strong acrylic adhesive that is permanent and non-yellowing. Gummed tapes are risky to use with Giclee inkjet prints because of their water sensitivity. In these cases a self-adhesive tape is a much safer alternative. Abaca.sa is strong enough to hold large digital prints, and supple enough to adhere to the print without distorting. Abaca paper is acid-free, biodegradable, and comes from a self sustainable plant."

Ahaha, same reaction here... And did you ask about insurance ??
One framer told me that nowadays all paper made in UK are made acid free, so they don't bother mentioning it anymore
Good luck !! BTW I am sure you know there are few DIY on EB - forum.Expressobeans/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=62429

Hinging/mounting a Murakami foil print, by sal on Sept 13, 2012 15:28:06 GMT 1, Can you post close up pictures? Do you have the name of the stock these are on?
sorry, but I dont understand what is this message referring to?!..
I know.. it took me ages to get to it.. I even managed to get married in the meantime
did you ask about insurance ?
not sure how things are in Kenya, but Croatia isn't really a country where taking people to the court is an easy option.. the law system is just too slow and inefficient.. plus, I know for sure they dont have any archival materials, so I might as well call my lawyer the moment I leave the print with them
I was also inking Abaca.sa should do the job.. by it's description it sounds like the right thing for the job...
I personally think they look good with just a spacer but its up to you...
yeah, I like em with just a spacer, but Im afraid I'd lose part or most of the number/signature that way.. also, I really dont mind a bit of waving of a paper when float mounted...

Hinging/mounting a Murakami foil print, by sal on Sept 16, 2012 23:47:46 GMT 1, ok.. so I ended up going with double mat instead of float mounting.. just didn't wanna risk it, and I think it turned out pretty good for a DIY job:
thanks for all the tips and help everyone, and sorry about bad light/quality photo.. I should hang these tomorrow and will share proper photos..
