Good time to buy?, by sausageboonwee on Oct 3, 2007 23:33:37 GMT 1, An unsigned Morons went last night for £560 on ebay. There's a Grim Reaper currently for £3800, a Deep End for under £1500 and people offering up some good priced Micallefs. A good time to buy or is the market about to collapse on it's arsene?

Good time to buy?, by Zippy on Oct 3, 2007 23:35:16 GMT 1, definately a good time to buy. many CC's are maxed out due to releases by Micallef, Neate and soon Banksy. Not many people have spare cash or room on CC so some bargains to be had. I've bought a lot in the last 2 weeks. Enjoy. Z

Good time to buy?, by Cocteau 101 on Oct 3, 2007 23:39:56 GMT 1, Good time to buy mate I reckon.
Interest rates will probably move downwards next, the summer lull will eventually be over, people will start to go mad at Christmas, more people will get into this art as recognition grows. Admittedly some people will find it harder but I think there are still a lot of people on the sidelines who will eventually come in.
Banksy is now an established artist, the Warhol of the 2000's, I honestly believe this.
Neate is breaking new ground and is pushing himself out there.
D Face still massively underated, Francis about to go mega and so on.
Some fantastic stuff coming up, I just wish I had more cash.

Good time to buy?, by pw on Oct 3, 2007 23:52:51 GMT 1, i would have said its definately a good time to buy. in fact the best time might be gone already. theres gonna be alot of buzz around banksy with all of the auctions coming up and the release of trollies.
most importantly, dont forget that his self-imposed 1 year hiatus is now over and we've started to see some new street pieces pop up. I'm expecting him to become much more active and high profile in the coming months.

Depends on how you look at things. For Americans, this is a terrible time to buy due to the current strength of the US dollar. If anything, prices are just adjusting to that.

Good time to buy?, by corisma on Oct 4, 2007 2:36:25 GMT 1, I agree it's a good time to buy
With more & more prints finding good homes (as they're not worth flippers buying) they'll only become scarcer & scarcer in the next year or so & Banksy , Neate etc. are here to stay
Think Micaleff's caused a bit of a shake up though & not really done himself any favours

Good time to buy?, by verbalkint on Oct 4, 2007 3:27:15 GMT 1, can i put forward a different theory? I dont whole heartedly buy into this but i believe that prices might not recover to their past highs. This last 4 months has seen an absolute flood of prints by top artists, and its not going to stop, there will maybe be another neate print tomorrow night, there will certainly be 3 or so more POW micallef prints (each show is like an album release and the prints are the singles!) and of course now banksy looks to be back from his extended break and is able to sign the editions, i would imagine trolly hunters will not be the last banksy before christmas. The market for prints is big, but not huge and when all of these prints flood the market it reaches saturation point.
A few months ago i had the start of an awesome print collection, but there was no way i could hang them all, so i decided to offload half of them. It was a tough decision, but they were in folders under my bed doing nothing. Its all very well and good owning 13 neate prints, but can you really put them all on your wall without sacrificing other works hanging space?
I think what is happening now is a combination of people selling to clear debt, people selling to clear room, the usual flippers who always buy to sell and maybe a small effect of the supposed econemy slowdown, which only happens because the news says people will stop spending, so everyone thinks 'shit, i better stop spending'!
It will be interesting to see what happens to the market after this banksy release, with it being such a popular print. Also if they charge £1000 each for the signed and £500 for unsigned and take another £600,000 or so out of the market it will do more harm to the secondary market. Especially as people who really want a signed trollys offload a few prints to get one early while ebay is flooded with them.
Anyway, sorry for the rambling, i guess the point i was making was in short, 4 months ago there were 325 neate prints in existance, now there are 1000 of them. The amount trebled over night and whilst indevidual prints like the 2 portraits are popular there are still 3 times as many neate prints around so they are easier to find. There are now 2600 more micallef prints which has more than doubled his total prints in circulation. Its bound to drag the prices down and probably permenantly. Because every time they start to recover there will be another mass printing and sale. Artists have learned that its an amazing way to make money so they will keep printing them.

Good time to buy?, by snelj8 on Oct 4, 2007 4:23:45 GMT 1, think verbalkint hit it spot on... regardless of difference in new prints coming out, the main point is the quantity of prints available heads north in a hurry, and great artists will only mean great prints... eventually there will be plenty of nice new prints out there for everyone to enjoy, and no need for such high prices for existing prints...
that being said, there will always be a select few prints that will always hold their value, those that stand out above the rest ... so have a good eye and your work will keep its value, but essentially you should only purchase what you love..
the last alternative would be to just buy the originals, 1/1 all the way

Which is dictating my current ideas around buying. Fewer pieces but relative to prints their value is often pretty good.

Good time to buy?, by Chuck D on Oct 4, 2007 7:35:11 GMT 1, It will be very interesting to see what happens in the coming years. I am staying optomistic that we are part of a new progressive art movement that has just begun. There are many great oportunites out there right now to get amazing pieces by inspired artists for a rather fair price. Banksy, AM and Neate are going to be around for a long time. Now is a great time to get involved.

Good time to buy?, by pezlow on Oct 4, 2007 8:43:02 GMT 1, I agree with Verbal. The market has reached saturation point with the successive releases. In august it was Neate. In September Faile and Micallef. In October it is the turn of banksy. Existing collectors either can't afford to buy the new stuff or alternatively simply don't have any more wall space. New collectors entering the scene don't need to buy the old prints at inflated prices on the secondary market because there is plenty of new stuff to keep their interest up.
p.s. Verbal - I see you are selling your turin scam original mate. You must be sorry to see it go..

Good time to buy?, by Pattycakes on Oct 4, 2007 9:17:19 GMT 1, We've all read in the various art press that the market is braced for a crash, in my opinion it will happen - in some form or another, the main issue is what will be affected. When it happened in the late 80's everything was hit, and whilst by the late 90's the market had started to recover many artists were effectively left behind. There are some artists from that time - important artists, whose market was permanently crippled by the market crash. Not that I am saying this will Happen to Banksy etc. but it makes you wonder, taste is such a fickle thing. I feel places like Sotheby's are in some respects dangerous to an artists career, they are increasingly being seen as the dictators of style and the prices their auctions make set the benchmark that others aspire to - as soon as things start to go wrong they change focus and the art that was championed in their sales is dropped - you only need to see an artists pictures BI and few times and people start to say it's all over for X, and it doesn't take long for people to start listening to them!

I agree with this, I know there is a demand to be satisfied, but to saturate that demand is bad for him... Going from editions of 95 and 50 to 400 and 1000 is a big jump and I think in the long run prints from these editions will suffer, which will have a slight knock on effect on the others.
The same with Adam Neate releasing 9 prints at his last show...
Hopefully for their sake the people managing these artist's careers will see this and put a stop to it before it's too late. But that depends what is important to people like Mr Lazrides, the artist's career or his pocket... and there is only one man who can truthfully answer that...

Good time to buy?, by BME on Oct 4, 2007 9:35:20 GMT 1, PW- I wouldn't describe Micallef as 'relatively unknown' or his decision to release a print edition of 1000 as a mistake.
POW made it clear that the release was an attempt to provide a large number of people with access to Micallef's work- it did that very effectively. As for its long term impact, I doubt that it will have much effect- the GIWIWB prints are already going for two to three times what they were sold for and given that the standard price for other Micallef prints is 2k plus I think that they will probably continue to increase in value. Either way, with originals going for well over 40k I think that he'll pull through
