Good time to buy?, by Cocteau 101 on Oct 4, 2007 9:45:16 GMT 1, Has anyone evaluated if the numbers of prints released has risen in proportion to the number of people on this forum, because I think there are more and more people coming into the market for this type of artwork. The popularisation of these artists will only lead to increased demand. From a monetary view the killer would be cheap posters/prints in large numbers of old classsics being made available; from a hanging on your wall view, if the image is the most important thing then would most of the people who are into this stuff begrudge people owning the image they wanted. Being totally honest and maybe a little cynical, I think the original hardcore of Banksy fans would be pissed off. Much like finding a great band and then 3 years later everyones into them and taliking through the gig - maybe a little elitist but another view.

Good time to buy?, by finsburyparkranger on Oct 4, 2007 10:08:37 GMT 1, People keep talking about a crash? We've had it. Its evident all over ebay. Our whole art market has speculated a massive a crash and has adjusted prices accordingly amazingly quickly. Thats the power of the internet i guess. Look at the price drop CBL quoted for a turin scam( price halved in three months). The Irony huh. But seriously, things might get worse or they might get better but we've just had an up to 50 % adjustment to prices.
After micallef the market will learn to ask more questions before it pays thousands for a print like ... a) Do I love this print b) Can i trust the artist or their agent will not saturate the market after I buy the print c) How will i feel if this print goes down in price? I think this will cause an interesting price disparity as the really good art will do very well from this low point where as the stuff no one really likes but bought for speculation will do worse.
Actually it could be a very healthy time for our art scene. No longer can people churn out s**te and expect it to be sold. There will be a return to print houses bringing out smaller editions, cheaper prints and more beautiful and thoughtful art out of necessity. LAZ and Micallef cashed in this year but not necessarily at everyone else's expense.

Good time to buy?, by Curley on Oct 4, 2007 10:42:19 GMT 1, can i put forward a different theory? I dont whole heartedly buy into this but i believe that prices might not recover to their past highs. This last 4 months has seen an absolute flood of prints by top artists, and its not going to stop, there will maybe be another neate print tomorrow night, there will certainly be 3 or so more POW micallef prints (each show is like an album release and the prints are the singles!) and of course now banksy looks to be back from his extended break and is able to sign the editions, i would imagine trolly hunters will not be the last banksy before christmas. The market for prints is big, but not huge and when all of these prints flood the market it reaches saturation point. A few months ago i had the start of an awesome print collection, but there was no way i could hang them all, so i decided to offload half of them. It was a tough decision, but they were in folders under my bed doing nothing. Its all very well and good owning 13 neate prints, but can you really put them all on your wall without sacrificing other works hanging space? I think what is happening now is a combination of people selling to clear debt, people selling to clear room, the usual flippers who always buy to sell and maybe a small effect of the supposed econemy slowdown, which only happens because the news says people will stop spending, so everyone thinks 's**t, i better stop spending'! It will be interesting to see what happens to the market after this banksy release, with it being such a popular print. Also if they charge £1000 each for the signed and £500 for unsigned and take another £600,000 or so out of the market it will do more harm to the secondary market. Especially as people who really want a signed trollys offload a few prints to get one early while ebay is flooded with them. Anyway, sorry for the rambling, i guess the point i was making was in short, 4 months ago there were 325 neate prints in existance, now there are 1000 of them. The amount trebled over night and whilst indevidual prints like the 2 portraits are popular there are still 3 times as many neate prints around so they are easier to find. There are now 2600 more micallef prints which has more than doubled his total prints in circulation. Its bound to drag the prices down and probably permenantly. Because every time they start to recover there will be another mass printing and sale. Artists have learned that its an amazing way to make money so they will keep printing them.
well said that man ;D

Good time to buy?, by Chuck D on Oct 4, 2007 16:04:16 GMT 1, I understand the artist wanting to get his work on as many walls as possible but these large print runs are killing me. I say they should just make a limited edition poster instead.
Primarily I'm drawn to an image, but I must say I am a snob when it comes to how rare a print is as well. I would much rather pay more money for a smaller edition any day of the week. I think BLK/MRKT did it best with their release of the Ian Francis prints. And although the Micallef ed of 50 was quite pricey, the quality was there to back it up.

Hmmm, interesting. I think I'm the opposite - whilst I would always buy signed over unsigned given the choice and exclusivity is always nice, I like the art hanging on my walls due to the image and if it is more easily available available due to print releases of 1000, then good work I say.

Good time to buy?, by Run Pig Run on Oct 4, 2007 19:28:41 GMT 1, PW- I wouldn't describe Micallef as 'relatively unknown' or his decision to release a print edition of 1000 as a mistake. he IS relatively unknown. theres a big world outside this forum where hes completely unknown, like most of the other artists discussed on here.
he IS known to almost everyone who is into this buying prints thing. and they are the ones who are buying these expensive prints. it doesn't make any difference whether your mum has heard of him or not.

Good time to buy?, by Chuck D on Oct 4, 2007 19:47:25 GMT 1, That's the beauty of collecting art, Bert. To each their own. For some reason, it makes me feel better knowing that there is only a small amount of them in the world and hense usually more sought after. Like the Banksy Kates or AM's GIRD...I would do practically anything to get my hands on one.
