People can then at least make an informed decision whether they want to be part of a community where making bigoted or prejudiced statements is acceptable.

JonOne ๐บ๐ธ Graffiti โข New Print Release โข Art For Sale, by Feral Things on Oct 30, 2016 15:38:52 GMT 1, [...] its brutal that he hasnt done a show in his hometown NYC. Shows in France,Germany and Switzerland but nothing in NYC [...] Jonone has a new show called 'Crossing Over' opening at Galeries Bartoux in New York on 30 November. Unfortunately, the gallery's neighbour is a pretty unsavory character (the gallery is next to Trump Tower) but I'm sure his homecoming show will be pretty special anyway.
Also, his book 'Chronicles' is being released for the first time in English and there will be a book signing at the gallery. For anyone who hasn't seen the now-soldout French edition of the book, it's hardbound, 352 pages and covers his whole career from painting trains in Harlem back in the '80s to his current practice in Paris. Photo by Gwen Le Bras.

Visit PARIS ๐ซ๐ท France Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Feral Things on Oct 28, 2016 19:34:35 GMT 1, Thanks for the positive comments. Here's some photos of New York legend T-Kid170 painting the boards at Les Halles last week.
And it hasn't quite got T-Kid170's style from back in the day but everyone loves a runner, right? This was on Line 14 on Friday.
Unfortunately, I've lost my photos of all the other shows and events from last week but it's worth checking out Zevs' take-over of Chรขteau de Vincennes and, although I don't have photos from the great group show that Galerie Itinerrance had on, this taster video from them is worth a watch:

Alรซxone related news, by Feral Things on Oct 24, 2016 19:16:25 GMT 1, As mentioned above, I've lost most of my photos of the other artists' works from the 'En Vie' show so most of these are from Emporium-S and you can see more of their photos here.
Mr Jago
Sebastien Preschoux
Julien Colombier
Jonone, Mambo, Supakitch and Zepha (unfortunately these photos from Audrey and Anatole's IG are about the only photos of these artists' pieces I can find online)

Alรซxone related news, by Feral Things on Oct 24, 2016 17:29:44 GMT 1, Here's the first half of my photos of Alรซxone's pieces from the 'En Vie' exhibition at the weekend. I've been to a lot of shows over the years but this was one of the very best. Alรซxone's pieces were rich and textured, full of energy and rhythm and it was a genuine pleasure to be in their presence. The works are crammed with little details that were full of love, tranquility, fury and jubilation - it felt a bit like having life injecting into your blood stream. Really beautiful stuff!
Unfortunately, all my photos that I took of the other artists' work has inexplicably vanished, which is very frustrating because it wasn't just Alรซxone's work which was exceptional. In the flesh, one of Mr Jago's canvases was the finest that I've seen in the 15 years I've been following his work. There was a massive piece by Jonone which appeared from a distance to be made up of his abstract tags but was actually made up of hundreds of the used felt nibs which he has used to create his canvases over the last few years. Plus large canvases by Zepha, a large installation by Sebastien Preschoux which sat in what used to be the chancel (the venue used to be a church) and works by old favourites like Mambo.

Visit TOKYO ๐ฏ๐ต Japan Street Art, Galleries, Events, by Feral Things on Oct 23, 2016 17:15:06 GMT 1, I was lucky enough to be in Japan this time last year and the food, people, gardens and sumo were just incredible. You're in for a treat!
Josรฉ Parlรก has a show on at Yuka Tsuruno called 'Small Golden Suns'. I got the book that accompanies the show a couple of weeks ago and the work is as beautiful as you'd expect from Parlรก but there's no substitute for seeing his work in the flesh. There is only a relatively limited graffiti/street art scene in Japan but the best neighbourhoods to head to are Harajuku (where the London Police lad below is) and Shibuya (where the Invader is located).

I just donโt get it at all , by Feral Things on Oct 23, 2016 14:10:12 GMT 1, [...] would really love to hear concrete examples of why they love KA WS specifically - what all of this work is trying to say? [...] As South Bound has mentioned above, the basis of Kaws' work lies in Pop Art; questioning what is fine art, what is mass media culture and whether there's actually a difference between the two. Kaws' toys ask the question 'what is product and what is art?' and to a certain extent he is just applying a 21st century aesthetic to what Klaus Oldenberg did several generations earlier. But this was just Kaws' jumping off point because what his work is really about is communication.
Globalisation has made the cartoons of Peanuts and The Simpsons universally known and understood in a way which just doesn't apply to other areas of society like politics or science. They cut across not just economic and racial divides but they are also known all around the world and to this extent they are like a global language. Kaws' work is saying that these cartoons and facets of popular culture which are often dismissed as inconsequential or disposable are actually the things which bind us together in the world and act as the real form of communication which can break down barriers between people because they are globally understood. As CREAM mentioned, even when the image is highly-abstracted you can still readily identify elements of Sponge Bob in pieces like 'You Should Know I Knowโ.
It is this slightly cold, academic meaning to his work which probably appeals to the museums and institutions that show his work. However, I suspect that many of the collectors of his toys are also drawn to the far more basic and human qualities of his sculptures, namely the relatability of the shy, dejected or introverted figures covering their faces or comforting one another. I think a certain amount of his popularity also just comes down to the same basic consumerism which fuels brands like Supreme.
In the same way that Warhol previously worked in advertising and later did commercial work for Absolut, Kaws was a background animation painter for a Disney-subsidiary and has done work for the likes of Marc Jacobs. So unlike the Subvertising billboards of the 1990s, the Ad Disruption work from the same period (sorry, I don't know who to credit for the photo below) shouldn't be read as a criticism of corporations, but instead it embraces consumerism and this is a thread that has run through his whole career.

Stohead

Stohead, by Feral Things on Oct 14, 2016 16:59:35 GMT 1, Stohead has a new two-man show alongside Heiko Zahlmann called 'Karamnolage Zwo'. Stohead has been pushing his typography further and further towards abstraction over recent years and these works show a literal crossing of a line where even the abstraction begins to dissolve into something entirely different still. I think the 'Wow' show a few years ago at Galerie le Feuvre was a big step forward and it's great to see the work continue to develop. The show is at Galerie Zimmerling & Jungfleisch in Saarbrรผcken, Germany and runs until 29 October.

Art podcast?, by Feral Things on Oct 13, 2016 17:46:08 GMT 1, Here's a few more podcasts that are worth a listen:
- Vantagepoint have just posted a new episode with Borondo which was recorded while he was painting the big wall in Berlin that caused a fuss earlier this year.
- Roger Gastman talks to Rebel Radio about how artists should develop their practice and their careers; well worth a listen given that he's such a knowledgeable guy.
- Henry Chalfont did an hour long discussion which is well worth a listen and concentrates on NY Golden Age graffiti.
- This American Life did nice little piece about the Vandal Squad's pursuit of Revs; skip ahead to 49 minutes in for the Revs bit.

Blu ๐ฎ๐น Bologna Street Art โข Print Release โข Art For Sale, by Feral Things on Oct 13, 2016 17:28:41 GMT 1, Blu has painted two new walls in Bergamo; the one below is called 'Un tetto per tutti (A roof for all)'. It's painted on the side of one of 200 municipal housing blocks which are empty in the city and highlights the problem of people waiting needlessly long to get public housing. As always, the details are fantastic; pensioners, anthropomorphic-fruit, protestors, crocodiles and kids all uniting together under one roof and resisting an eviction from wind-up toy police figures.
These photos are from the Bergamo Post and there's lots more worth checking out here.

Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Oct 5, 2016 21:37:40 GMT 1, [...]are they in French? Or is each magazine printed in both French and English? Yarn Bombing, by Feral Things on Oct 5, 2016 20:00:01 GMT 1, There's a day of talks at the ICA in London called 'Art on the Streets' on 10 October.ย I wasn't sure where to post this but as Magda Sayeg is one of the speakers this seemed like as good a place as any. The talks are about 'diversity of creative responses to our changing urban environment'. It's a bit on the academic side but the full programme is available here.

Originators and Pioneers, by Feral Things on Oct 5, 2016 19:34:04 GMT 1, There's an excellent documentary called 'Rubble Kings' currently available on the BBC iPlayer (if you're not in the UK you can rent if on Vimeo here). The film documents the 1960s and 1970s gang culture of the Bronx and how hip hop evolved out of that environment, or at least the three elements of hop hop other than graffiti. The documentary includes lots of first hand interviews including with Afrika Bambaataa and DJ Kool Herc, as well as many of the gang members themselves. The documentary is available here and there's a trailer below:

Swoon related news, by Feral Things on Oct 4, 2016 21:02:11 GMT 1, I'm sure most people have already seen elsewhere but, if not, Swoon has a new show called 'The Light After' opening this weekend at Library Street Collective in Detroit.ย She has also just installed a new piece in the Detroit Institute of Arts if anyone's in town for the show and wants to check it out.ย
I posted who some of the people in Swoon's piece are here but here's some more info about the imagery that wasn't in the MIMA exhibition...
Left: Edline is a young girl who lives in Cormiers in Haiti where Swoon has been working on the Konbit Project since the earthquake in 2010.ย In addition to helping the rebuilding work, Swoon organised puppet theatre for the kids of the village based around her love of Indonesian shadow puppets and Edline's character was the sun which is now the centre of this piece.ย Middle: This is a portrait of the artist Monica Canilao who Swoon has collaborated with several times over the years including at Black Rat Projects in 2007, in Djerba in Tunisia in 2014 and at their joint โWitch Womenโ show in San Fransisco last year.ย Right: Swoon lived in Cairo for two months in early 2009 and this is a portrait of a young women she saw just the once who was adjusting her hijab in the street one Sunday.
Left: Rosemary is a young girl who was at the 160 Girls project in Kenya when Swoon visited; the project cares for and seeks justice for girls who are the victim of sexual abuse and there's a short film about their work here.ย Middle: Sylvia Elena Morales was a 17 year old victim of the ongoing femicide in Cuidad Juarez which has seen thousands of women murdered since 1993; there's a short film worth watching here.ย Right: Kamayura is named after the indigenous tribe living in the Amazonian rainforest who have been fighting the construction of the Belo Monte Dam which threatens both the ecosystem they live in and their traditional way of life.

I'm sure most people have already seen elsewhere but, if not, Sw oon has a new show called ' The Light After' opening this weekend at Library Street Collective in Detroit.ย She has also just installed a new piece in the Detroit Institute of Arts if anyone's in town for the show and wants to check it out.ย I posted who some of the people in S woon's piece are here but here's some more info about the imagery that wasn't in the MIMA exhibition... Recommended Art Books, by Feral Things on Oct 4, 2016 18:25:07 GMT 1, I know this might be a little off topics, but I was looking for another Street Art magazine and wanted to see if anyone had a suggestion? Juxtapoz is excellent and if you subscribe you get a different cover to the regular newsstand version (if you're into that sort of thing). Hi-Fructose has more of a lean towards pop-surrealism/lowbrow art.
I would also recommend Graffiti Art Magazine which is run by the guys from Galerie Openspace and covers a lot of the European scene that doesn't get much of a mention here. They also publish an annual guide that is half way between a book and a magazine and provides a good overview of some of the artists that have been active recently.

Conor Harrington, by Feral Things on Oct 1, 2016 15:50:10 GMT 1, [...] The real shame is the foul presumptuous posts people like you make because you've been on here a long time. [...] I couldn't agree less. Coach's contributions are overwhelmingly positive and welcoming and I only wish that everyone had his love for the art itself, rather than its perceived financial value.
