Banksy Street Art • Tesco Generation, by spiiiiiike on Mar 3, 2009 11:53:37 GMT 1, I just don't get why someone would want to not only deface a cool piece of street art, let alone deface it with jealous 'turf war' rants and homophobic crap.
For me now graffiti and street art is about making a wall or a bus stop more interesting - not destroying something that makes the world a more colourful or interesting place.
Cut and 10 foot seem the main culprits. I imagine they do the same kind of crap over community murals. They probably go running back to mummy and daddy's gaff in Crouch End when they've finished being all 'ghetto'.

Lazarides Still Closed, by spiiiiiike on Feb 17, 2009 10:12:48 GMT 1, It seems the long periods of closure thing is what the bigger urban galleries do. Guess they don't have to bother putting shows on all the time. This is not what the established fine art galleries do though.

Its a sh1t month , by spiiiiiike on Feb 1, 2009 14:04:40 GMT 1, Both xenz and dale grimshaw shows are pretty cool. The wall piece on curtain road by grimshaw is probably the most impressive thing in shoreditch for ages. There's loads of bargains around too, what's sh1t about that?

Buying from Self-representing artists., by spiiiiiike on Jan 20, 2009 11:33:57 GMT 1, I personally think that unless the gallery has a strong reputation and the ability to further your career that I would self-represent. IMO it is important that an artist early on in his/her career does not jump in and join an average gallery (and there's so many out there) as this will only serve to increase your prices by 30% - 50%, which is the last thing you want to do at a stage when you need to keep prices low and get your art out there (and in doing so build a fan base). Once your profile grows to the extent that your work is in demand, then maybe the time to join a gallery who's willing and able to support you.
I'd be very interested to hear the views of some of the galleries on here...
I agree with the above to a certain extent on this. It really depends on what you want to achieve as an artist. Some artists want to top up their giros/wages a little by flogging their wares on here, while others want to do proper exhibitions with press releases, open nights and hopefully get reviews etc.
All the big names are with galleries and do shows though.

Dale Grimshaw open night and wall piece pics, by spiiiiiike on Jan 12, 2009 21:41:38 GMT 1, Heavyconsumer I think you have a valid point. A lot of artists do stick to a winning formula once they have found it. I think this stuff is more gothic/darker, with a Parla twist. Think I prefer the new stuff all in all.
