Great city as others say.
Some good galleries too- White Walls and Shooting Gallery down off Geary St
What's left of the Banksy's - the one in Chinatown is perspexed over, has had paint poured sown it and virtually incorporated into a big Chinese dragon mural but stil there.
The 'Airstrike' piece is also still there and looking great - well it was in Late October.
If you drink real beer (craft beer they would say) - the Toronado is just about the best dive bar I know. It's all about the beer but they have Alaskan Smoked Porter and Russian River's Pliny on draft. Two of the best beers in the world. See 'Beer Advocate' for confirmation of that - not just my view.
If you like music then amoeba is essential - and you'll be in Haight Ashbury if you're there. So Magnolia brewery is just up the road. You can stand and state at the Grateful Dead's house for a whole of so inclined. And have a walk in Golden Gate Park and visit the Japanese Tea Garden.
I live in London...but I like SF a lot...

What to see/do in San Francisco?, by soam24 on Dec 5, 2013 15:37:33 GMT 1, SF is sweet. if you are going to do alcatraz look into booking NOW as there is a long wait.
Just walking down by the docks and piers there are alot of shops, seafood etc.
awesome city.
golden gate park is a must, also there is something north of the city that has a spectacular view of the city, forgot the name of it. maybe head over to expresso beans and ask over there.

What to see/do in San Francisco?, by randomname on Dec 5, 2013 17:10:20 GMT 1, I lived there for a few years. One of my favorite things to do was Golden Gate Park. It has museums, an aquarium and Japanese garden. You might not get the best weather this time of year, but it's still worth going.
For Alcatraz, I'd suggest buying tickets ahead of time. They were sold out when my parents came to visit. So they missed out.
Haight Ashbury is worth an afternoon. It's mostly shopping and coffee shops. A lot of thrift shops and vintage clothing if you're into that. People selling art on the street. If you're lucky, you might find something good.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is one of the best modern art museums in the world. I just checked their site to see what showing and unfortunately they're closed. But they have exhibits up around town that would be worth checking out.
There are a lot of galleries on Geary Street. Most were a little pricey as I remember. But worth a look.

What to see/do in San Francisco?, by pcant on Dec 5, 2013 20:44:06 GMT 1, And if you have time and feel like exploring a bit, head across the bridge into Oakland and Berkeley. Oakland has a solid street art scene, some of it in dodgy areas, as well as a thriving food and beer resurgence. Check the Temescal/Uptown/Piedmont areas for good restaurants and bars, plus the first Friday of every month is a big street/art/music festival on Telegraph Ave. called First Friday. Come early, the shootings usually start later (I'm kidding, I live a few blocks away, it's fine...)

Oakland has some very bad parts and muggins happening all the time.

Obviously I am Bias, but I have traveled a ton in the US and SF IS the best City in the states. Have fun, just walk/bike/bus around, the penn is only 7 miles wide.

Fair point, but muggings happen everywhere (even Shoreditch, dare I suggest it) and there is a lot more of the world to see if you don't start by assuming it's scary. And while I'm at it, SF has a pretty high crime rate in some areas as well.

What to see/do in San Francisco?, by randomname on Dec 5, 2013 22:23:59 GMT 1, I never went to Oakland. But I had a friend who did. Haven't seen him since.
As far as good views go, there's a park at the top of Bernal Heights. I lived half a block away. Amazing panoramic views of the entire city and hardly anyone knows to go there, so it's never that crowded.

What to see/do in San Francisco?, by genejo on Dec 5, 2013 23:13:31 GMT 1, Definitely check out White Walls, Shooting Gallery, 1AM - plenty of other galleries, too.
Ben Eine just finished a new mural off Market & Octavia, and also has a big mural at Hayes & Octavia.
Check out the alleys in the Mission for some awesome graffiti and murals, especially Clarion Alley.
Berwick Place (alley) in SoMa also has some great murals. Well, there's art all over the city!
+1 for Toronado - buy some sausage at Rosamunde next door and bring it into Toronado. For the best burritos you'll ever have in your life, go to El Farolito on 24th & Mission.
I live in SF and would be down to walk around town and check out some murals and street art if anyone visits town and wants to spend an afternoon exploring and shooting pics. Just shoot me a DM!

What to see/do in San Francisco?, by pcant on Dec 6, 2013 1:09:03 GMT 1, I never went to Oakland. But I had a friend who did. Haven't seen him since. Really? That's terribly tragic. Or almost unbelievable.
Seriously, SF denizens like to cap on Oakland, until the Twitter-inflated rents push them across the bridge and they discover it's nowhere near as dangerous as they have been led to believe. And they can afford to rent a house with a yard instead of living in a broom closet, the weather is always just about perfect and the whole food/beer resurgence is fantastic. On second thought, yeah, stay away from Oakland....

What to see/do in San Francisco?, by pcant on Dec 6, 2013 2:24:16 GMT 1, OK, that's fair. But if anyone wants specific tips for the East Bay (art/food/drink) I would be happy to help. Also we have the best taco trucks (SF has the burritos, no doubt, but Oakland has the tacos).

Now, to be fair, yes, some of these are in dodgy parts of the city, but if you go during the daytime and keep your wits about you, you'll be fine. That sounds more ominous than it should, I've spent many afternoons on International with friends hopping from truck to truck and we've never had a problem.
This link is a good compendium of East Bay trucks, I would single out Tacos Sinaloa as fantastic (they have two trucks in the same parking lot, one does fish, one does meats, and also tables under a canopy) and a few blocks further down International, in the Goodwill parking lot at 29th and International, are two trucks from Mi Grullense, same deal with one doing seafood and one doing meats. The carnitas at Sinaloa is stunning, and the cabeza at Mi Grullense is equally fantastic.
