Contraband 2 - Aug 8th 2014 Hollywood, CA, by djcuthbertson on Aug 10, 2014 7:01:04 GMT 1, The Harland Millers really seem out of place with the rest of these artists. It looks more like his pieces were used like the Banksy piece to give credibility to the show. If he really made these specifically for this show he was sold a bill of goods as this show is not the place for his work. No offense to the other artists but "which of these things does not belong here?"

Contraband 2 - Aug 8th 2014 Hollywood, CA, by skorcher on Aug 10, 2014 14:16:11 GMT 1, That was the price before the show, when you had the option to purchase them framed or unframed, they were all framed with matching color spacers for each, they were $1,250 a pop. Someone did buy the red one quite early. So, of course the price hike wouldn't bother the guy that just added 2 Dot Dot Dot canvases to his collection.
Aren't you a DotDotDot fanboy yourself? I think you've mentioned you have 5 of his prints, all bought $econdary, don't be a hater because I own few originals. I was in release discussion on the drop with you on the Handgun and don't agree on the price hike, but the seller has every right to ask for what he wants. If I feel if it's overpriced, I simply stay away. We all know how hard it is to score on a drop from DotDotDot, that is why you buy his prints exclusively on $econdary Market correct?

Contraband 2 - Aug 8th 2014 Hollywood, CA, by Ottomatik on Aug 10, 2014 15:06:50 GMT 1, I'm not a hater. If anything, somewhat jealous. I am a fanboy.
I'm just saying that I'm rather annoyed that during a Dot Dot Dot drop of 100 prints from PieceofSheet, MANY from the numbered editions are held back and sent to galleries that instantly jack up the price excessively more than the release cost.
That's not secondary, yet they charge 'secondary' prices.POS released the Handgun prints on June 10 for $419. 10 days later, Bad Apple released some of their batch for $650. From June 20-Aug 8, BlackAppleArt raised their price from $650 to $1000.
Knowing that most sold through POS will end up here, ebay, Finn.no, and ExpressoBeans in the hands of flippers, makes me somewhat angry. (Only because I want a Handgun print and refuse to pay the outlandish prices.)
I just think it's a bit much.

Half the problem is all the prices are being set by distributors and those related to the artist ala Micallef.
Just look at the Theft and Scream prices now.

Contraband 2 - Aug 8th 2014 Hollywood, CA, by kultur on Aug 10, 2014 20:26:12 GMT 1, The sad thing Ottomatik is that Black Apple is not a gallery and therefore has no rules.
At best, he is a party planner who has figured out how to support his art habit from people on this board and many other places as well as get art for himself at 50% off retail prices. It is the sad state of this street art/ urban art world is that it is about hype and churning and burning artists - very different from an actual gallery.
He got a free venue (slam it all you want but you can't beat free) Guest List (to make you feel special) Free Alcohol (brings the people) Most likely a free DJ (for her publicity)
Presto you have an event just like that.
No doubt it has taken many hours of work and I do not want to take that away from him, but he was just a fan less than 1 year ago on here with a different screenname that many of you will remember - fondly or not.
Advancing street/ urban art... highly doubtful.
Making money - definitely.
Building his own collection - definitely.

Contraband 2 - Aug 8th 2014 Hollywood, CA, by Deleted on Aug 10, 2014 21:54:43 GMT 1, why isn't he advancing street art? I think the street pieces painted as part of the event are wonderful. he curated the event and got all of those artists over there to paint. My guess is they wouldn't have been over there if it wasn't for the event.
He's also exposing locals to the world of street art and I don't see how that's a bad thing?

Black Apple Art did a great thing here. the venue is liked by some, and hated by others... big deal. its about the art right? I prefer a dirty warehouse space and a chicago house DJ!!! I didn't get a chance to attend, but i did get an opportunity to purchase. I would not have had an the opportunity to support a favorite of artist of mine, or actually pick up an original!!!! if it wasn't for this event.
Many people would NOT have even been exposed to Ben Naz, or ZACH, or mason storm and the many other artists represented there. So i think the show did do something positive for the street art community.
heres a thought.... Whats wrong with someone wanting to build their collection while supporting the artists financial interests as well? just because he doesn't have a gallery space per se, doesn't mean he is any less credible than a brick and motor gallery. Most galleries are whore houses. and charge you extra to finance their expensive gallery space and the high salaries of their operators.

Contraband 2 - Aug 8th 2014 Hollywood, CA, by skorcher on Aug 11, 2014 1:22:22 GMT 1, I'm not a hater. (Only because I want a Handgun print and refuse to pay the outlandish prices.) I agree with you on the outrageous prices on some of Dot's prints, eBay flippers are having hard time selling these Handgun prints, eventually prices will go down like the theft, if they don't sell. Just wait til next year, Dot will come out strong, exclusive prints and canvases will be available. Can't give out details, but I do get first dibs before the general drop on the Dot's. One of the great perks for knowing the right people.

Contraband 2 - Aug 8th 2014 Hollywood, CA, by sommguy on Aug 11, 2014 1:42:53 GMT 1, and a print set from Naz can't decide which i like better. the gold halo or the silver.... so until i decide, i will keep both and give the other to a friend, most likely. the print is nice! the paint is thick, the edges are deckled. i will say that the i heart LA button on the riot cop's chest looks to be printed on the paper, and not a pul through the silkscreen. but i don't know too much, so i am guessing.

Advancing street/ urban art... highly doubtful. Making money - definitely. Building his own collection - definitely. I have to say Kultur that I'm a little surprised by the tone of your post. Some of the best shows I have been to have been those put on by fans wishing to be involved in the art scene or artists themselves putting on group shows. I quite like the concept that someone wants to start a business doing something that they love, rather than have an established gallery pouncing on an urban/street artist and knowing nothing about the background when I visit or read about shows. This is just part of the do-it yourself ethic that thrives in exciting movements, from the people not the establishment if you like. I am just calling it like I see it in this open forum. To compare this event to an event like Fairey just did in Chicago - now would you really like to compare them for what they are? To what Otto was mentioning - holding back stock to raise the price a few months later is shady and should be a warning sign to collectors. Manipulation of markets really is sad to see and for Dot Dot Dot I do recall this being the case at least one other time with his prints (especially just for gallery/artist financial gain as their own flipper). Is it possible that what you are describing as pouncing on artists is what is being done here? - even if he has great passion for these artists
I just gave everyone on here the blueprint for what was done here. Go ahead and do it as a side project as is often done - for those with passion for art or money or both. Give some $$$ to charity is always a good idea and was done here. Only thing left is to contact the artists. I doubt any artists at this show would not answer an email. I know mine have been answered.
I live in LA and did not attend either show. I am not a gallery nor one pretending to be. Even galleries do unethical things ( I have many stories) but I think that for the most part real galleries invested in urban/street art do more for their 50%. 60% if you are POW (OUCH)
Funny that I am getting PM's to say what his old screenname was. Ask him. If he wants to come out and tell you it would add to more transparency. When I buy art I do like to know something about the person I am buying from, what/who they represent and what their history is.

Contraband 2 - Aug 8th 2014 Hollywood, CA, by Drymounted on Aug 12, 2014 6:43:23 GMT 1, I just wanted to give a big congrats to Black Apple. The event was incredible, and I do not regret the drive from Las Vegas to be there. The venue was amazing, the staff was incredible and the Ben Naz print that I picked up is a banger.
Much respect, and I look forward to Contraband 3!
