Selim Varol Collection, by yapsey on Jul 18, 2014 11:23:05 GMT 1, Sorry if this has been posted before, but I stumbled across this earlier. The collection is absolutely astonishing. Never really seen anything quite this extensive and well displayed.
Photos pulled from this article from Arrested Motion (8/4/13)
"Get excited if youโre in Spain at the moment as Turkish-born German collector Selim Varol has taken his impressive collection to the Contemporary Art Center of Malaga. Traveling from Dusseldorf (covered) to Malaga, At Home Iโm A Tourist is a massive exhibition of over 15,000 works highlighting many of the artists featured on AM regularly including Banksy, KAWS, ZEVS, Shepard Fairey, Audrey Kawasaki, FUTURA, JR, Josh Keyes, and Faile to name just a few. If youโre fortunate enough to be in Spain in the next few months be sure to stop by as this show which will be on view until June 16th."

I'm torn Wiz - When a collection is this extensive, and hung in this manner (I personally love tightly packed cluster hanging like this), it's an amazing thing.
Although I also agree that the simplicity of one or two pieces that you adore, with their own walls, with space to breath, can be equally as brilliant...

Selim Varol Collection, by Deleted on Jul 18, 2014 11:50:26 GMT 1, I get you, I too like full walls but when its like this ie. 3 DSTQ in one blob it all looks a bit catalogued and alphabetical order to be a real loved collection to me. Wouldnt mind half a minute in there with a large sack though.

Wouldnt mind half a minute in there with a large sack though. I agree - it was when I saw the 4 DFace 'American Depress' cards that really drove that home. I'm sure the conversation with BRP went something along the lines of
"so we've got four of large American Depress pieces"
"i'll take them"
"what - all of them?"
"yes - in every colour"
"riiight. errrr..."
"my people will be in touch regarding payment and shipping." phone goes dead....
I agree - all very unconsidered. Incredible, but under the umbrella of what I would call 'blanket collecting'...

... I wouldn't expect everyone to agree with my view, but I would expect to be able to express it.

Selim Varol Collection, by Loobaz on Jul 18, 2014 13:19:28 GMT 1, I think it's an amazing collection and it's great for him to share it with so many people. Whilst not something any normal house or collector could accommodate, I'm in awe.
That Os Gemeos piece is fantastic, and I'd love a better shot of the Herakut(s).
Who did this one, please? (It reminds me of a Zevs piece, but not quite the same....)

Selim Varol Collection, by mace on Jul 18, 2014 20:23:02 GMT 1, Selim is a top bloke, met him several times. He explained to me that he never went on vacation or had a fancy car for many, many years. Just put all his money at a very early stage in urban art. He also has some kind of "collecting disorder" since his mother threw away all his toys when he was 14 or so deciding that he's an adult now.
Interesting, always positive and modest fellow. He was also curiously listening what (few) pieces I have.
Also talked with him about the Radar Rat piece. It's a tribute piece by some artist that I forgot so doesn't belong to the Banksy section....

Selim Varol Collection, by johnnyh on Jul 19, 2014 6:43:16 GMT 1, Wow that's completely mad. Not quite sure what t think really. One sense way too many etc but again lots of people have more pieces than walls so although the degree is different not sure the concept is.
He obviously doesn't sell either any or much which again I think is nice.
Would love to see it the difficulty as mentioned would be giving focus to each piece individually but then again where else do you see a decent reflection of an artists work through the years. But must say I do like looking at a cracking piece or two per wall as Wiz said.
I suppose it is what it is, just not quite sure what or why it is but could also say that about most people collections I suppose.
Bit like the old George Best joke "spent all his money on birds, booze and gambling; but at least he didn't waste it."

Hope I don't get too personal telling he's good friends with many artists now. He met his wife via JR and JR was his best man at his marriage. Selim (Turkish) inspired Shep to do his Atatรผrk image and Shep visits him when he's in Germany etc. etc.
Selim if you read this I hope you don't mind me telling those info. I got the impression that some members' envy want to see your person in a light where you absolutely don't belong to...

Selim Varol Collection, by Shoot Again on Jul 19, 2014 19:06:16 GMT 1, Think you got me a bit wrong mace, there was no bad intention/envy/misplaced jealousy towards Selim from my side, his collection is simply the best in the world and I was genuinely asking myself how he managed to gathered every single piece of Streetart that ever got released, simple as that. Obviously, with a collection like that, he must be friend with plenty of artists, not just JR and Shepard ;-) That's part of the beauty of that artistic movement, ie. that geniune collectors can really get to know artists, become long term friends and share their mutual passion ;-)
