Changes to the Guidelines and Rules on Sales Threads, by 11 on Aug 4, 2015 14:41:49 GMT 1, Over the past few months, it has become apparent that the number of sales threads from members that don't otherwise participate have increased significantly.
At the same time, there has also been an increase in the number of sales threads that do not contain an appropriate level of information. For the good of the forum, both issues need to be addressed.
We have therefore implemented a new rule for all sales threads:
Members must have a minimum of 50 posts, and must be a member for a minimum 1 calendar month before they can start selling.
During that period, we would expect our new members to Introduce themselves and use the time to make positive contributions to the forum and the community.
In a similar vein, we have also amended the rules so that apporpriate information is provided in sales threads. There are times when this may not be possible due to rarity or exclusivity of a piece, but that is by exception. Most sales threads should contain the minimum suggested information, so going forward there will be the potential for Guardians to remove sale threads that do not conform to the minimum expectations or are considered insulting to our community.
The actual rules will be amended as follows :

10. In Sales threads you are asked to post as much info as possible.

Size,
Condition,
Edition,
Photos,
Location.
There are occasions where discretion is required and information will be readily available over PM โ which should be made clear in your sales thread.
For Sale Threads that do not provide the minimum suggested information, as indicated above, and/or continually disregard this requirement may be removed or locked.

I guess with originals a gauge of gallery prices could be used as a starting point?

I'm not really talking about the need for discretion. More simply not knowing and so gauging the market for a piece.
If I put an original up for sale and say in my post that I genuinely have no idea of value, so I invite a discussion by pm, will that sale thread be locked/deleted?

The issue has been people use this 'loophole' to avoid giving information about standard sales that don't fall into the above categories, this in-turn upsets the general community as it is seen as a 'thumbed nose' to everyone.

Absolutely - the challenge we have always faced is that we don't want to 'force' people to give information about a piece of work as it could be a previously unseen OG, a rare HPM or by the Artists / previous owners condition of sale, can't be openly displayed on any public platform. As long as the threads keep to the spirit of providing as much info as possible and being clear on pricing - even to say that you are open for offers, is much better than a 5 word sales thread
I hope it will be recognised that we are trying to improve some of the bad habits, on the whole everything is fine and will remain unchanged but we now have some framework to be able to combat those rogue threads that offend the community through the lack of information - and an implied lack of respect to the community in general

I am mainly here as a newbie to this world so don't have a great deal to contribute to discussions but am interested in buying and one day probably selling on the forum however I will most likely not have reached 50 post by this point.

For longer standing members, we would hope they will recognise that as a community we value everyone's contributions and while someone may not feel to comfortable engaging in open discussions there are other ways to participate through the posting of art related news, photos, shows and the like.
If people don't keep within the spirit of the community and try to just nudge up their count with irrelevant posts then we will look into that on a case by case basis but hope, in general, people do see this as a positive step to encourage participation rather than a draconian measure - as it is not intended as such.

We decided to go with a combination of time and posts so that new members have the time to familiarise and acquaint themselves with the forum. There have been so many times that I had to take the time and effort to type up a decent PM, only to hear a totally ludacris asking price. If people would just post in a FS thread they'd like 10k for their unsigned not mint grannies, it saves a lot of people a lot of time. |

I would recommend to anyone that is PM'd about a print that you also ask for some references - this isn't in anyway an unscrupulous practice, especially if you've posted a wanted ad and is applicable on the open boards too but you generally get some commentary as to the credibility of the seller there

Just because a member had just joined and had no posts wouldn't mean I would not buy from them just as if a member had hundreds of post I wouldn't trust them just on that alone. This may just stiffle the forum from growing and getting more people involved in urban art, and as we all know the more people collecting and interested the more all off our artwork will ultimately appreciate in value!

The benefits of selling here are secondary to joining a great forum with a great community - If someone only see's this place for selling then I for one am happy for them to go to eBay - and the reality is that if they aren't already part of this forum they aren't likely to be offering a deal that couldn't be found elsewhere I don't believe we've met Mr. Hughes - why not use one of your posts to make an introduction |

I have sold, bought and traded art via the forum more times than I have posted. I have even helped some long term members achieve their holy grail. I have sold (via pm) on the forum because I wanted my prints to go to a good home and because I couldn't be arsed with eBay, often selling at a lower price. In fact, I have met more forum members than posts. The people who bought early on don't want to post 50 times for your approval so you're just directing them elsewhere - but I suppose there are plenty of fresh Banksy prints out there?

Totally agree, having just done a deal with a member just last week for a Banksy print with a member who had less than 50 posts! Absolutely love my new print and would hate to think that deal wouldnt of been possible this week now the new rules have come into place! |
