Has this place changed? , by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Oct 29, 2015 23:00:27 GMT 1, By the way - it's not just this forum to be fair, in places like flickr the exchange of information and the culture of comment and exchange has also disappeared. I blame instagram. "like" = dialogue redux. I've often thought that about the "like" button. It's replaced real comments, sadly.
Very good point coach, maybe disable it?

Has this place changed? , by sakyamuni on Oct 29, 2015 23:04:23 GMT 1, Hello. I was suggesting that flippers should take their wares to eBay. But that is just very much my own opinion. For many years flipping has been frowned upon here. It's rather rubbing it in the faces of those that missed out. I subscribe to that view and think it would be a shame if flipping became an accepted practise on here. I am well aware that others don't share that view. Got it. I would add that most of the forum doesn't share that view and if someone can sell at > cost they will want to maximize gain. Whether its on eBay or the forums.
I think you're wrong. I would say that the vast majority of active members are against using the forum for profit. I also share this view, if you're looking for quick money, use ebay.

i get the selling before its arrived thing, but get real otherwise coach. the whole argument is comedic, the same conversations were happening here 9 years ago. its like a time warp on here sometimes.

Has this place changed? , by Agent Provocateur on Oct 29, 2015 23:38:37 GMT 1, WARNING.... big ramble!
Change is good, stagnation is bad... passion and growing popularity create a great environment for adaptation and growth. Standing still, unchanging, breeds apathy, boredom and inevitably disinterest.
So yeah, the exciting emergence of street art from the foundations of graffiti was a breath of fresh air in the usual, bland and stereotyped art world construct (white walled galleries, poncy critics keeping themselves in a job by thinking they're the only people intelligent enough to understand it). One of the main things that gave it an edge was the freedom of the work on the street, free for everyone to view and interpret how they want. The minimal marketing of paintings and stuff to buy (in my little bubble) also made it less a commercial interest, more a visual and philosophical roller coaster.
I knew some of the old masters and their paintings, understood some of the key art movements from the last few centuries, and even noticed some of the modern/contemporary art around me over the past decades. But I was not inspired, there was no passion or drive for me when the same artists and paintings were always wheeled out for my usual luddite lessons in what art I should like..
This changed when I started to engage with the street art phenomenon, there it was in front of me, hard, gritty, stylisticly diverse and philosophically noncomformist. Everything had to be learnt and put in to some understanding because everything was new. My mind was blown.
This is how I felt when I joined the Banksy forum. Listening, chatting and inevitably meeting like minded strangers through the forum, and the expanding knowledge of artists, pieces, politics and the history of street art I was obsorbing made me excited and passionate about art.
[on my phone, with eyesight going, so will hav to pen part 2 in a bit... it will cover popularity explosion, saturation, familiarity, commercialisation, main stream hermoginisation, muralism, investment, disillusionment... and other long words I don't understand. I think]
ps. yep, you may wonder why I've posted this unintelligible monologue in this thread... I thought I'd get to the point sooner! It is about this forum and change, but because I wanted to explain where I was coming from it looks like any sort of relevance will be in my next instalment!

I didn't say anything about members not buying and selling FR. I said that it was my personal opinion that people who try to manipulate the market (sound familiar?) deserve to receive snide comment and that traditionally flipping has been frowned upon. And that was in response to a direct question.

Wrong again assuming everyone buys and sells on here. Wrong again assuming we all live in 1 bed flats with 12 banksy prints.Maybe it is you that needs to get real, maybe your assumptions and based on your own morals (or lack of)
Where do you stand on people quoting fake ebay auctions and then starting threads alluding to the fake price and offering just under the fake price?
You are actually a stain on this site and one of the many reasons things went downhill.

Has this place changed? , by otomi on Oct 30, 2015 10:51:10 GMT 1, Is it just me, or has this place changed recently? It seems like there is not so much talk of shows, the art, street art, new and emerging artists etc. It seems like almost every other post is about the value of something. Or am I imagining it? Just a thought. This question gets asked every two month. So I think it hasn't changed.

Has this place changed? , by estelle getty fan club on Oct 30, 2015 12:13:48 GMT 1, I largely agree with the above
This question gets asked so often that it’s hard to know what or when people are referring to as the ‘good old days’. The question’s been asked when numerous people over the years either got banned or decided to move on; post NYC and now Dismaland; post every general Banksy print release since LA; with any mention of VIP print releases and the realisation that the average Joe might not get the chance to buy an undervalued print at source again; with the rise of WK, NBF and other forums that have popped up and since disappeared; post the Laz/Micallef debacle; post the rise of MBW and post god knows what else.
At its essence it is a board about street art (as broad as that subject is) with a smattering of decent members and a healthy dose of buying selling which is essentially what the art world evolves around – can we honestly say we would still be talking about Banksy had he not had the commercial success he has. I’d like to think yes but I seriously doubt it.
I get on here a lot less than I used to but it’s good to see a few familiar names even if mine has long since changed.

Fair enough Estelle! I think I was having a bad night, and, using recent posts, had noticed again a trend towards every other post being a price check/argument mostly about banksy, and thought it a shame that this seemed to be becoming the focus of the forum. I somewhat regret starting it now. I don't want to be perceived as a discontent. I'm not. I like it here.

You are actually a stain on this site and one of the many reasons things went downhill. You should have said something sooner. Lol. I don't have a 1 bedroom flat either but, I kind of agree that an average person who happens to come across something worth 10X what they paid would be more inclined to sell to pay bills rather than put it on the wall. As POW had a lottery format for a while, I think the ratio of people who "are not true fans" vs "true fans" is higher, thus a secondary market exists.
Wrong again assuming everyone buys and sells on here. Wrong again assuming we all live in 1 bed flats with 12 banksy prints.Maybe it is you that needs to get real, maybe your assumptions and based on your own morals (or lack of) Where do you stand on people quoting fake ebay auctions and then starting threads alluding to the fake price and offering just under the fake price? people getting a bit hung up on the 1 bedroom flat thing. it was just an example. im no estate agent but owning a 1 bedroom flat, in say, Belgravia Square is probably more than your average mansion. It was more an example of no one spending £12,000 on a piece of paper to expect it to not be worth something in the future. If thats the case why make sure its conservation framed and with coa. Pin it up.
true.

If thats the case why make sure its conservation framed and with coa. Pin it up. You get it conservation framed because you've just spent £12,000 on it (and the coa authenticates it as what you bought), whether you think a it'll be worth more or less than £12,000 in the future doesn't make any difference. Why damage it with drawing pins, sun damage and not authenticating, when you can do something to keep it in the condition you bought it? That's what most people do with anything they buy, whether it's expensive or not.
You know if you buy a new car for £12,000 it'll have lost about 40% of it's value in a year, so does that mean because you know it's going down in value you park it in the closets ditch to your house and scratch it with your keys? No, value has nothing to do with it, it your property and you look after it whatever the value.
