Has this place changed? , by Coach on Oct 28, 2015 20:51:44 GMT 1, Is it just me, or has this place changed recently? It seems like there is not so much talk of shows, the art, street art, new and emerging artists etc. It seems like almost every other post is about the value of something. Or am I imagining it? Just a thought.

I'm afraid i agree somewhat.....but think it's also indicative of the times. Street art has become a pastiche, mainstream and diluted. However things always go full circle so fear not. A new champion will arise!....keep the faith.

I'm not saying it shouldn't be considered to some degree, but for some, it appears to be the sole motivation in making purchasing decisions.

Has this place changed? , by lee3 on Oct 28, 2015 21:32:41 GMT 1, I'd say this board has had a particularly tumultuous year. The with me or against me nonsense followed by a suspect-at-best former guardian probably accounts for a large share of the decreased older member participation. In its wake we are left with more heated and contested discussions regarding best practice and values. I don't think it's a recent change at all but a rather easy to follow long-term devolution. And i don't believe the artists nor the art has anything to do with it but ymmv. In years past, Cosmic would save the day with some nice old photos but i'm not holding my breath.

Has this place changed? , by Jeezuz Jones Snr on Oct 28, 2015 21:45:03 GMT 1, I post here and on NBF I said when the whole episode about Dan's sales thread was playing out, the forum fast became all about sales. Which would cause sniping, bitching over profit and loss. The majority of posts are about money, it gets boring. I just check out forums on my commute and reply to content added by others, I will try to find more time to add content also..

that amount of knowledge taken out was bound to lead to a drop in the quality of the forum depth and information.

Has this place changed? , by Ottomatik on Oct 28, 2015 21:51:28 GMT 1, I think the forum is what we make it.
If people keep looking in the rear view mirror, you're going to crash.
There are always new artists to talk about. (I just got the new Nelly Duff email about a new artist.)
So instead of threads like this, make one that speaks of new art and/or new artists. Problem solved.
(Coach, you know I love you more than my liver.) xoxo

This should hopefully reduce people getting involved in arguments ? As most use 'recent posts' on a daily basis..

The feeling is mutual Otto! I honestly didn't intend to start a thread having a moan. But I appreciate that I have. My concern, and what I was trying to question, is that so many posts these days are solely about the value of prints, and I wanted to question if that is enough. And of course you are right. I will get on to the new artists thread soon. I have some smashers to share!!

Just a thought. Poster Bob. I feel that is a sweeping generalisation and unfair about Guardians. We do our best to inform people about shows, post photos, introduce new artists and try to mediate where needed within the parameters or rules. Feel free to have a Guardian bash -you of course entitled to your opinion. Where this place is concerned more people have found out this is a place to sell or trade apart from ebay. This is the sole reason some not all join. We introduced a 50 post limit to sell in order that people will discuss and help build a community of urban art lovers and I think think this is working slowly but surely.

I think the vast majority of the FG's do a great job. I suspect (but don't know for certain) that most members think that too. I am not ungrateful for your efforts.

Has this place changed? , by mla on Oct 28, 2015 22:10:26 GMT 1, While I agree with the sentiment of the 50 post rule, in practice, it has seemingly led to strings of inane and utterly meaningless posts by newer registrants in order to hit the quota.
Anyways, like with anywhere, I take the bad with the good. I frequent multiple art forums and each offers their own unique perspective. Regardless of what this place has been or will be, I'll likely still be here reading.

Has this place changed? , by Nick on Oct 28, 2015 22:18:57 GMT 1, Migration of knowledge during guardian gate, and also the fact that the vast proportion of members do only want to chat about the values. Threads get started about shows and street pieces and get very few replies. There's only so many times a member will devote a half hour to uploading photos, only to be met by a luke warm response.

Has this place changed? , by Hairbland on Oct 28, 2015 22:32:33 GMT 1, I think the forum is what we make it. There are always new artists to talk about. So instead of threads like this, make one that speaks of new art and/or new artists. Problem solved. Assuming this is a conversation over a beer...
Most forums I've participated in over the years (art, music and otherwise) tend to go through cycles particularly in an attempt to stay relevant, with the occasional infiltration of trolls that when out of control turn off original members that then get tired of checking out the site. That Chi-town buffoon an example.
I haven't been on this thread since it's inception, but have been for 4 years or so and have discovered and purchased some great art. Some of the artists mentioned on here are discussed long before they make it to galleries like JLG.
I've also noticed (who hasn't) the crossing over of Urban Art to the mainstream, with artists doing sneakers, liquor bottles, retail promotions and more, which is not unusual as the corporations are always looking for new souls to suck the life out of.
In my opinion the crossing over commercialization of Urban Art on this site has been accelerated by print-making facilities (can't really call them galleries), where the hyping and attempt to get as many benjamins as possible while the scene is hot (artists also, see Ben Eine, Martin Whatson, Sandra Chevrier).
But then I find myself on a brief holiday walking in Little Havana, Miami today on Calle Ocho and I find on the Goodwill store Blek Le Rat and Invader works and I smile.

Spot on. I must admit that I've not made the best effort recently. I've been put off by the constant talk of the value of this or that banksy print! But I will make more effort.

I completely agree with you Otto, there are always new artist to talk about and old ones to discover as well which I've been doing more of lately. Just discovered the French (Renaissance Man) Roland Topor, artist, writer, actor/film maker, activist. Really like artists that apply themselves to more than one modality or medium. I also agree that Nelly Duff is a great gallery that has a lot of favorites and many new artist to discover too. They have a great selection and their customer service is first rate. If there are any members who haven't check out their web page I urge you to do so, you won't be disappointed.

As a guardian, I have no issues if you call them out when the 'new' members are racking up their 50 post and you spot it. Or, you can send a guardian a pm in case we have missed it.

People do seem to be more interested in how much their banksy is worth or the dull price check, which is replied by someone who has said piece and hypes it, through the price check. Street art threads have effectly changed but this may be due to the instagram trend, as most members on here use it, and its more accessible on a phone. Show threads also seem to dwindle as well, which is a shame as this introduces more people to new artists. Death in Dalston is a case in point new and up and coming artists in this show, yet this thread will fade on the power of banksy's investment threads.

Amen. Ai Wei Wei thread - did eve make 2 pages? Street art thread gets looked at by about 5 people. Indeed I agree.

Has this place changed? , by pressman on Oct 29, 2015 0:03:44 GMT 1, Yay, almost at 50 posts! I've only been on here about 5 months so I can't comment on days gone by but I've been well impressed by people's knowledge and grateful for everyone's help so far. We all see the odd idiot who likes to belittle newbies like me but they are the minority. I'm not sure what my point is but I think it's generally a really good community. Those helpful members are definetly the reason why I still log on regularly.....

Has this place changed? , by Cornish Crayon on Oct 29, 2015 0:10:51 GMT 1, Poster Bob. ย I think the vast majority of the FG's do a great job. I suspect (but don't know for certain) that most members think that too. I am not ungrateful for your efforts.
I know where I stand thanks coach......... I am trying tho
