Has this place changed? , by Deleted on Nov 4, 2015 5:21:49 GMT 1, The art market is hot. That includes all of the art markets, that includes urban art. More and more people are intrigued to join the market and buy art, so the money discussion comes up more and more often. There is literally no other market where you you can double your money year in year out.
But... While there are more and more people talking about money, there are also more people buying art. Thats a positive, no? The unseasoned buyers will likely get burned in the long run, but so long as they love the work and support the artists it wont matter, right?
So, let them talk about money, and the history of art which includes finance as much as it includes anything else, and let them make their decisions, and enjoy the work on the walls. Be honest with them, dont hype. The ones that make bad decisions will learn the hard way. and the ones that dont care, wont care. The others will prosper but at the end of the day, we're enjoying what we love most and at the same time, we're feeding artists families. Thats pretty cool...

Has this place changed? , by Dr Plip on Nov 4, 2015 11:43:26 GMT 1, It's because 'street art' is dead. No, really. If it is, that's the fault of the street artists isn't it?
I think of the "street art" "scene" rather like the art forums. You get out what you put in. It's one big collaboration. Tired of seeing s**t art? Make good art. Tired of seeing artists sell out to high-end galleries or companies? Don't sell out. Sick of seeing multiple print releases in every colour possible? Don't do that.
Street art isn't dead. That's like saying food is s**t because McDonald's sells garbage.
Some people don't like the "gentrification" of street art, but there's no denying that the scene is probably bigger than it's ever been. Sure, a lot of it might be fluff or hollow, but there are some real gems out there. It's a continual process of discovery and rediscovery. Artists will come, artists will go.
The artists have the power though. Whether that's an artist with a big crew, financial backing and cherry picker, or an artist with just a marker pen. They can all have their say. And with social media, it's never been easier to get your street art out there to people.
Edit: Wait. Were you being sarcastic, Rene? I can't tell.

Has this place changed? , by daniel3886 on Nov 4, 2015 16:46:52 GMT 1, Do we want urban art to become a true art movement in its own right? Is it already?
It's already sold by the major auction houses albeit as a subsection of contemporary art with some.
Or can that never happen as the minute it becomes mainstream it will loose the underground/Activist principles it was built on?
Will we all have Sold out once collections start going into 6/7 figures?
I for one hope it goes on to feature heavily in the history of art. Art has been painted for and financed by the rich throughout history. This is obviously happening today to some extent. But when people have the opportunity to create work and share it with the world instantly. That's where I feel the magic can happen.
The forum has changed but with the momentum that's gathering I think that was inevitable. As previously said new members joining all the time. Consistent transparent moderation has improved things in my opinion. Although not being able to fully express myself with colourful language should I deem it necessary. Feels like a nanny state and not inline with the values the art we all love was built on. Would dismaland have been the same with censored language?
422 posts since 2006 is not a great hit rate. I'm going to try to do better. If we all did this the change would be quite something I'm sure
Be the change you want to see. (Not my quote, something I'd read.

Has this place changed? , by Stoko on Nov 4, 2015 21:03:43 GMT 1, Has it changed Coach? You bet. I had enough of this place months ago. Back biting, sniping, profiteering and little talk of street art. I occasionally pop back on as there are some incredibly driven, knowledgable and passionate posters on here - this place has been my education for the past 5 years or so - but the humour and banter seemed to dry up a long time ago. Apologies for humourless, banter-free post.

Has this place changed? , by Wearology on Nov 4, 2015 21:39:52 GMT 1, This place has definitely changed, because we as people have changed over the past 9 years. When I joined this place my marital, financial & social status were completely different than they are almost 10 years later. My taste in art has completely changed over the past few years as well. I am not even sure I really like Bansky's art anymore. He has changed the most in the past few years. I used to think it was so cool that he sold art really cheap and it was available to everyone, I am completely turned off by the fact that his art is only available to VIP's now and everything is a secret and priced for the Elite. He has become the people who used to make fun of and that really does suck.

Not to pick on you Wear, but i recall you looking for a Nola here about 2 days ago and even reported as sorted if memory serves. Unless buying for a friend, why buy art from artists you're don't love? There is more than enough to choose from.

The "board" itself doesn't change but new and existing members on it may and this is how it evolves or regresses in some points of view.
As for Banksy I do not agree at all since I see his true work and his masterpieces are actually free for all to enjoy. BOTI, Gaza, Dismaland and the hundreds of street pieces over the years are his true forte and for the most part free for the world to enjoy. If that is not enough for someone and they want a print or original, then yes, there is a tough acquisition process compared to any other living artist. It seem fitting to me that now the "VIPs", celebs and well-off "insiders" are now the ones who fund all these free exhibitions and IMO this goes along perfectly with Banksy's "Robin Hood" type mentality.

Good post and represents what most have gone through, Banksy has to seek to VIPs too fund his stunts. It is hypocritical and annoying yes but he needs the $$ coming in..

Has this place changed? , by Lroy on Nov 4, 2015 23:05:08 GMT 1, Maybe Banksy has changed. As each of us. The question should've in the title too : Is changing negative ? Could be positive but if I make a screenshot of what it happens here ( apart this thread ) , we will have this in recent threads : " sale sale sale sale sale " j In French " sale " means dirty.

Unless buying for a friend, why buy art from artists you're don't love? There is more than enough to choose from. Pretty sure it wasnt for him Definitely wasn't for me. I bought it for a friend. I do not own even 1 COA worthy Banksy's at this time. If I could afford his art I would buy a Gangsta Rat NYC as my first print and than a CYW and than a NOLA in that order.
