Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by stuey09 on Dec 9, 2007 18:08:28 GMT 1, For all those going IGNORE the Hotel they told me like Goz that I wouldn't get in NOT TRUE you'll make it OK. The Israelis just don't want us going or seeing what is going on in there.
Am I to take it that it is an Israeli manned checkpoint that we'll have to go through in order to get in? Do they ask your reason for entering? and is it ok to just let them know you're going in for the SG exhibition? Also, am I correct in assuming that it is Israeli army who man the checkpoint when you return?

I'm sure Vazie will be able to give you a more up to date response, seeing as I went there 3 years ago and she just came back! but yes they will ask you why...simple...say you're going to the church of nativity! I think that's prob better than saying the ghetto...what do you think Vazie?
and yes they will check you leave but there shouldn't be any probs, be polite and cooperative - no matter how idiotic some of the gun toting 16 year olds act and enjoy your trip!

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by twigboy on Dec 9, 2007 18:31:53 GMT 1, I was out there a few months ago, and this is how it works...
When you leave Bethlehem, you will go through a check point... they will want to see you passport, and will ask a few questions. Yeah... the Church of Nativity was great thanks... Short answers.
Then the next checkpoint you will go through is outside of the Airport... At this point you can say you were staying in Telaviv on Holiday. the Girls were great, the beach was nice and I love your country... Yuck!... If you say you were staying in Jeruselum, then they will sticker your passport..., try and get an israel taxi driver, if not and you are with a palasinian driver, then make sure you both have your stories sorted, but you have never met the driver before, and your hotel booked it for you... (never say you stayed in Bethlehem) then once in the airport, you will be questioned again... Once again, say Telaviv, Holiday, Beach was nice, clubs were great (Yuck!) and all should be good... its one of the most stringent security checks you will go though, but this is all part of the experience...
Good luck... I wish I could make it out there to see the show...

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by alsbabar on Dec 9, 2007 18:52:43 GMT 1, Just got back (late last night) from the Ghetto - the less you mention Bethlehem the better - the Israelis have no interest or comprehension of the Ghetto. Anyone who goes to Bethlehem for tourism will still be subjected to questioning, so best advice is, and the Ghetto also states it, JUST SAY YOU ARE GOING TO JERUSALEM. When you go, definitely get a taxi, get a yellow plated one, that takes you to the checkpoint, you will walk through, when you show your passport, they only give Palestinians a shit time. Its all games they play with them.
There are a lot more work at the Ghetto then there is on site - you dont get a full comprehension of the beauty of the work, until you see them in the flesh. Anyone who is pondering going, just do it, its a fantastic opportunity and a fantastic experience.
The Wall, you seen on tv, but you dont realise the magnitude and misery of it, till you get to see it.
Palestinians truly are friendly, and will welcome you with a big smile, the falafels are awesome and make sure you have a Shwarma Kebab.
Here are my pictures taken of my time there

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by alsbabar on Dec 9, 2007 19:04:18 GMT 1, cheers stuey - and i should also mention that the people who put this whole thing together, there intentions really are sincere and the impact it has had on the Palestinians is truly appreciated, as they know it brings awareness to them and their plight. So the more of us who do go out, and support this cause, and the more the word gets around, the less their suffering is, as they know that the world does care.
POW, the artist and the locals who are out there day in day out making the statement, should feel proud

YES say your going to The Church of the Nativity
AND when you get there as well as the Getto go and look in the Church I mean it after all it is the place were Jesus was born you can see the Actual manger
Male security Guards ? ;D
There were Female security guards when I went through and BELIEVE ME they are WORSE than MALE GUARDS ;D
Don't ask me about going IN to Bethlehem I have edited my original post to protect those that got me to the boarder The truth is I had NO problems going IN
It was just getting OUT late at night and having to deal with a serley FEMALE GUARD a male guard had to calm things down before I blew or I might be still there now held in some cell ;D Don't do as this Little Lady did but make sure you BITE YOUR LIP AND BE NICE DO NOT ANSWER BACK OR GET ANNOYED WITH THE GUARDS. DO NOT GET THEM ANNOYED I am sure a male guard would NOT help you out and clam the situation down. I had the advantaqge that I was a woman and HE LIKED ME
MY advice when going IN say you are going for TOURISM and to SEE THE CHURCH OF THE NATIVITY and NOT SANTA'S GHETTO
We don't want the Ghetto closed down do we ;D

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by monstris on Dec 9, 2007 19:38:51 GMT 1, More info from Goz...who's desperately in need of sleep....
"Tell evryone to come. If they are afraid and scared, tell them. Its the safest freaking place. I feel safer here than in my house in kings cross.
Also, I used a taxi guide who brought me everywhere since 7 this morning for a 6 hour tour. His name is nayef and his mobile is 052 2244962 he's brilliannt. I had a in depth account of the situation and he shows u all the art and brings u to places for food too. All for 50 usd.
But honestly, the art fades in the background once u are here. Its the saddest place ever. With the happiest people.
Although the touts get to u though."

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by scottd007 on Dec 9, 2007 20:05:09 GMT 1, I was traveling with Als - just thought I'd add that we encountered some problems when we got back to the airport @ Tel Aviv. Our taxi driver was questioned as to where he had picked us up from and he had no choice but to say that it was Bethlehem - this set off all sorts of alarm bells with the ever-so- slightly "cautious" Israeli security services. We were detained/interrogated for approx 3 hours whilst they established that we were who we said we were and had not been up to any naughty stuff whilst in the West Bank - It was not a pleasant experience. In conclusion, I would suggest that if you do visit "Santa's Ghetto" (and if you can, you should!) you should not come straight back in one taxi from the Check-point. Go to Jerusalem first & take another taxi from there. Then LIE THROUGH YOUR TEETH and say that you have only visited Jerusalem. It will save you a lot of grief!

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by alsbabar on Dec 9, 2007 20:17:23 GMT 1, we used a guy called Yamin, when we got to Bethlehem, he is taxi driver, he was great, he took us around, totall nice guy. He charged us $50 per hour to tour the wall, take us to the sites, like Shepherds Field (were Jesus allegedly tended his sheep), Nativity Church, tour of the street art, including the wall. His mobile is 00972 (0)522 853466.
For Falafel, go to Ruth's Field, which is next to Shepherds Field, freshly made falafels, with all the trimmings.

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by anthoz on Dec 9, 2007 20:20:19 GMT 1, I was out there a few months ago, and this is how it works... Then the next checkpoint you will go through is outside of the Airport... At this point you can say you were staying in Telaviv on Holiday. the Girls were great, the beach was nice and I love your country... Yuck!...
no racism here then.....
