Cock on, Bongo. Few 'open' democratic systems operate a political spectrum as narrow as that which exists in the US...

Good work fella! +
I'm very jealous. Wish I was out there. Not only for the experience and the art etc, but also for the 'chicks with guns' ;D

No he didn't but there is a Banksy directly opposite from the hotel he stayed in in Bethlehem.
He also made a point of saying that the FCO and he are stressing that travel to Bethlehem and Jericho is safe.
And it is. As houses...as long as you're not Palestinian. Don't be nervous for god's sake.
As for the chicks with guns, all conscripts to the Israeli army have to keep their guns with them...even when off duty because losing it could land you in serious shit.

Or perhaps a Dove print, I guess we wont know until we know. Which one do you think it'll be? Well, good luck to you when it finally comes out. Talk to you later,

There is but those who've been to Bethlehem are not at liberty to disclose what the new Banksy is just yet...at least I don't think so.
Plane two and a half hours late at take off...now in freezing London. Big up to all the boys (and girl) we met out there. +1 going all your ways.
If you're on your way out, contact Jalal Askara...he and his son drove around a few peeps along the walls, took you to places to eat etc etc. Do stress to the locals exactly how much some of the work inside is worth.... May motivate them to start chipping bits off the wall to flip on eBay!
Jalal's number is +972 522 365 703.
And do pay a visit to the inside of the Jacir Palace Hotel. It puts Saddam Hussein's palace to shame. And make the effort to see Beit Sahour and Beit Jala...a refugee camp and border town respectively. It's where the bulk of Bethlehemites live.
And as you're going thru Israel, have a Hannukah donut. Mmmmm.
Also recommend the falafel place off Manger Sq next to the Open Bethlehem office. A nice family run outfit with a monster of a bodybuilder doing the cooking when his dad isn't.
The gallery and the bids and the prints are SECONDARY here. The real show is the experience and the wall. Tell us if the catapult leaves as we know when it was set up....

Just had a look through your set of snaps. Very interesting. The photo of the 2 girls with assualt rifles is very disturbing in it's assumed normality.

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by stuey09 on Dec 15, 2007 23:10:51 GMT 1, Just a few things worth mentioning to those still thinking about going over. If you possibly can, then do it.
From a street art perspective it is a very worthwhile experience. The art on the wall and surrounding area is at worst good, but in general it is magnificent. Due to the scale of some works you will have to see it in the flesh to appreciate it, but also to fully get it, you'll have to put it in the context of the surroundings. The work within the SG shop will have you drooling - personal favourite being Peter Kennard and Cat Phillip's Soldier 1. Also there are still plenty of the excellent Flag prints available and it is a superb image.
However, above and beyond the great art, is the opportunity to have a look for yourself at what is going on over there, rather than reading about it. It wasn't too difficult getting into the country, except for one member of staff at Heathrow everyone that I dealt with was polite and reasonably friendly. So I think the earlier posts of intimidation and latex gloves are no longer such an issue as they're now used to us going over.
Not going to harp on about the politics of the place, it's up to each to make up their own mind, but better seeing it for yourself than getting the BBC's version.
So if work commitments allow, book it, pack it and fuck off over to SG. You'll love it.

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by lover on Dec 16, 2007 1:49:58 GMT 1, It is unfortunate that its necessary for national service in a country that is and has been under attack since its formation. Forget all the issues you may have seen, but until a people/religion love themselves more than they hate another people/religion there will not be piece in the region. The Hamas manifesto says they will not stop until they can march freely to the Mediterranean sea. Take from that what you wish, but I take from that they will never accept a 2 state solution. You can not blame one side in the situation, but you can not expect less security at an airport where they are under constant threat. Good night god bless to you all. Peace to the world

this thread has already had a middle east debate so let's not go there please. we could harp on about the hope in the country during the barak years which was flushed down the pan...how israel holds all the cards being the more powerful of the two...how killing leads to more killing no matter who you are...how being born is a political statement...how your average secular tel avivian couldn't give a fuck and just wants to get on with life.... but let's not.
just get your backsides over there before the 24th if you want to see the ghetto show. if you want the wall experience, go over at any time. it's 15 mins from jerusalem, the checkpoint is a bit of a hassle (i don't like having to get my passport out) which is why i drive over through beit jala (other forum members will say the checkpoint is no issue but i've gone thru too many of them in too many countries in my time and they bring me out in a rash).
as mentioned before, the ghetto is secondary to the experience. talk to the locals but avoid that shyster selling you beads and keffiyeh by the wall....

So if work commitments allow, book it, pack it and f**k off over to SG. You'll love it. Well said Stu and Oh monstris well said too Now the rest of you remember it finishes on the 24th so GET GOING and have a great experience

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by stuey09 on Dec 16, 2007 23:56:34 GMT 1, Just a few things worth mentioning to those still thinking about going over. If you possibly can, then do it. From a street art perspective it is a very worthwhile experience. The art on the wall and surrounding area is at worst good, but in general it is magnificent. I did, along with Graeme, Sham 69, Loupy and Monstris. All great forum members and the good company enhanced the experience.
There was some amazing art on the wall by an artist called K-NOB. Any information on him/her?

Yeah...I saw his/her work too -- very simple and straight to the point. The local driver said was British... but I doubt that's any help.... But if he/she is, then some more info and snaps of work on here would be most helpful. Will keep my eye out around Londontown for K-NOB works.

Santas Ghetto = Bethlehem, by lside on Dec 19, 2007 14:12:14 GMT 1, Got back last night and I’d like to say a quick thank you to all the members who had shared their tales and words of advice.
I was fully prepared with the all ‘right’ answers on the way in and had decided that honesty was going to be the best approach on our return. We were lucky enough to have a relatively painless experience but that didn’t mean our nerves weren’t tested at every point! Keeping our answers brief definitely aided the process I think.
Like those who had gone before, we had an incredible, humbling, eye opening and much recommended trip.
We spent (an incredibly quick) 6 hours with our taxi driver, come tour guide, in Bethlehem. Our day ended with a meal in his family home. Funnily enough I believe every taxi driver now has a personal Banksy tale… ‘From London?, ahhhh Banksy is my friend’ ‘Banksy was in my taxi’ ‘I was with Banksy when he did this, at night’. They are receiving a more measurable benefit from the visitors to the Ghetto. Our driver (who incidentally, had also spent 3 days with Banksy ) says that it’s not unusual to go 4 days without having a single person in his taxi. With the number of taxis waiting at the gate and the few people actually arriving through I am surprised it is not longer. I get the feeling (and also hope) that the ‘Banksy Taxi Tour’ will continue long after the show ends.
Everyone we met was genuinely warm and inviting and really interested in saying hello and having a brief chat. Haggling is an art I have never mastered however as the initial prices were always so ridiculously high it was an essential part of our experience. By the end of the process we were happy knowing that we were still being generous but supporting the local community and they are happy knowing that they’d done good business.
And of course the reason for the trip the Santas Ghetto show. How pleasant it was to walk around, enjoy the work and take some photos while being the only ones there. (Asides from the BBC film crew who were looking for an interview that is).
During our visit to the wall we watched Swoon paste up one of her new pieces. There’s a photo of it within the wall section on the Ghetto site. Not sure if it has been mentioned but inside each pocket was a famous quote / message of peace.
If anyone still planning the trip finds they have a night in Tel Aviv with nothing to do, we had a great time in a bar called Nanuchka. The bar/restaurant is in a converted old Georgian home. Great cocktails and the perfect place to get a real taste of how the locals like to party – dancing on the bar top included. This type of organised chaos would never be possible at any bar within the UK. (The food looked pretty special too).
Also – probably mentioned before - for a cheap fixed price way to travel long distance I can really recommend the Sheruts (shared taxis) as the way forward. Once you know the system (and it only takes one ride to be in the know) they run 24 hours, leave when they are full (I don’t think we waited longer than a couple of minutes for one to fill), direct to your destination and did I mention cheap!?.
So on my return I can’t pretend not to be a little disappointed that I’d missed the new Banksy release but hey, I will never forget how I felt as I crossed through into Palestine and walked down the security fencing nor the warmth of the people we met on both sides of the wall and I am not sure that POW could ever find a more fitting location for the Ghetto.
I am a bit out of touch with recent posts but I see a few people are still asking about whether there are any flag prints left. If you are still thinking about the trip this late in the month, just go! Print or no print you will not come home disappointed.
