Progression of Your Art Collection, by docean on Dec 8, 2016 3:03:16 GMT 1, I was sitting at work today thinking about how my collecting style has changed since I started. I thought it'd be cool to see what everyone's progression looks like.
For me my first pieces was a Durieux.
From there: I had a long Fairey phase --> Brainwash --> random artists I could afford / wall-filling phase --> current favorites are Chevrier, Whatson, Harland Miller, and Jasper Johns

Progression of Your Art Collection, by bigv on Dec 8, 2016 4:04:51 GMT 1, I started on 1xRun with some prints from Meggs, Above, and Cryptik. I've grown out of the Aboves but I sill like the cryptiks but not nearly as much as I used to. I too went through a Fairey phase and I'm still there, kinda. I've got a few pieces I absolutely love like a red and gold versions of the peace bomber, Dark Wave, and a matching number set of home invasion. From there I got involved with Saber and that's an ongoing relationship. But like you, I've also developed a soft spot for Chevrier (though I don't have anything yet).
The biggest change for me though is I've almost developed a disdain for prints. There's things I like and would even love to have on a wall, but I can't justify the cost for what's essentially a copy of something else. With the exception of bumblebeelovesyou's recent Booked release (I'm a book lover/collector originally) the last things I've purchased have been originals or 1/1 veriations. In fact, I just violated my buying moratorium for a Pokras Lampas original watercolor I've been eying for months ( I got it for a relative steal I think). Basically, my new rule is unless it's a really significant print (Banksy, Stik, etc.), I'm not touching it unless it's hand finished, an HPM, a 1/1 (or some other really low number release), or an original.

Progression of Your Art Collection, by Schrรถdinger's Chat on Dec 8, 2016 7:22:18 GMT 1, About 3 years ago I jumped in with both feet buying prints and started buying Josh Keyes, Roamcouch and Jeremy Geddes.
This year I made a similar rule to Bigv, that I will try and buy OGs or heavily hand finished pieces.
There are exceptions eg if I like a print and it's relatively cheap (preferably a low edition) or if it's something by an artist that I could never afford an OG by anyway.
In terms of style, I've moved from more photorealist stuff to more character based stuff eg Bisser,ador,Zed1,alexface, Nol,Sweler.

Progression of Your Art Collection, by Cutkillavince on Dec 8, 2016 10:46:05 GMT 1, I started with toys (Bearbrick, Michael Lau...) more than 10 years ago, then bought my first prints (3 prints) from Aya Takano also around that time (2005). I have been more and more active in buying prints, OG and toys in the last 3-4 years mostly from D*face, Parra, Jerkface, Kaws and Medicom (Bearbricks).
I'm still buying too many prints unfortunately, but trying to be more selective (AP or hand finished pieces) recently. The focus for 2017 is more OGs but this was also my focus for 2016, so let's see how things go

Progression of Your Art Collection, by Daniel Silk on Feb 16, 2017 1:55:19 GMT 1, What Artist got you into Art and how has your Collection progressed?
I would guess many people here started out with a Banksy as their first serious piece of Art or at least Banksy was the one who got them into the world of Street Art and Urban Art. Do you think your collection has progressed from the first artist and your tastes have changed as you have been exposed to different types of art?
What Artist did I start out with and what other artists did it carry on to over the years?
James Cauty > Banksy > Eine > DFace > Pure Evil > Eelus > Dolk
Of course many other artists in between those, but I think that's the main few
Please try to also post a list of artists showing the progression of your Art Collection.

Progression of Your Art Collection, by ecomwizard on Feb 16, 2017 2:17:45 GMT 1, Great thread Daniel!!
Lora Zombie > Shepard Fairey > DFace > Mau Mau > Eine > Faile > Invader > Dran > Banksy > Kunstrasen > Miss Bugs
As the walls fill up the less I buy but the more thought and exploration before finding a new piece. Just noticed today that it's been three years since I found this forum and I have learned so much, discovered so many great artists and met so many fine people!! Thanks so much!
Someone posted some great advice about how your taste changes the more you collect, that the art you buy in your first year of collecting is much different than what you collect now. I've noticed that myself by replacing a lot of the pieces I bought in my first year. Now I look at my walls and I love every single one.

Progression of Your Art Collection, by tobeannounced on Feb 16, 2017 9:32:06 GMT 1, I started with graffiti on canvases and mixed media (cardboard, aluminium, model trains etc):
Clean2 > DAIM > SEEN > SABE > Cope2 and undeground stuff from Denmark, France and New York.
when I bought a house, I built a dedicated "music shelter" for all my vinyl and hip hop stuff, where I moved all of my graffiti art. As I was searching for new stuff for the main house and I suddenly had massive wall space compared to my small apartment, I quite liked the clean look of framed up prints and started looking into it a bit more.
I started with old graffiti heads turned "limited printers":
HuskMitNavn > Stephen "ESPO" Powers > Todd "REAS" James > Ben Eine > Dran
On the side I got a bit more into "street art", I had always been a bit of a "graffiti purist" thinking that "street art" wasn't "real" and didn't require enough skills. As I saw that street art mostly tackled political and social critique, I started to appreciate it more and more.
Shepard Fairey > Blek Le Rat > Banksy
This led to a couple of other artists...
Barbara Kruger > Hank Willis Thomas
Right now, I'm really into comics, drawings and over the top pop-culture references:
Roy Lichtenstein > Kristian Hammerstad > Lauren YS > Takashi Murakami > Shohei Otomo > Kelly Lu
On the side, I have always had a deep passion for hip hop culture and classic imagery, so as I got older (read: earned more money) I got into fotography:
Chi Modu > Barron Claiborne > Ricky Powell > Danny Clinch > Janette Beckman
Overall for me it's all about the imagery and every piece I have ever bought is on the wall. I follow a lot of artists and appreciate a lot of different artists and styles, but I only find very few pieces that I actually want.

I loved the early collecting phase, stencils, pow releases etc. taste change as you get older and move on. Sold all the nick walkers and dolk. Still love josh Keyes work and will never sell. Always been a big abstract fan , my collection going forward will probably consist of abstract pieces and one or two typography pieces but for nostalgia would love to pick up early prints I missed out on by neate, micallef and bast back in the day...
Oh.. and a small win on the lotto and I will probably pick up a nice OG from both roa and Conor Harrington, great artists..

Progression of Your Art Collection, by kember on Feb 16, 2017 12:37:41 GMT 1, Lucy Mclauchlan was the first urban artist I came across, the Beat13 guys at The Custard Factory in Birmingham had some great screen prints I became obsessed with.
Banksy came next, then I had a book on contemporary illustration ( this one shop.gestalten.com/illusive.html ) that I believe had some Mode 2 stuff in it I absolutely loved, that and the AirSide guys (Lemon Jelly etc)
I took a break for a while and came back maybe 5 years ago with D*Face as my favourite artist.
More recently the conceptual stuff of Pejac I'm a big fan of, and since moving to London, Stik.

The last thing I bought was a Guido Molinari screen print from '65 and that was over a year ago. Pretty far removed from 'street art'. For those who are curious, he is a canadian painter from Montreal who was part of the 'op art' movement. He was included in the 'Responsive Eye' exhibit at MOMA in '65 along with Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely and Joseph Albers (among many others). As for adding to the collection, I still have my eyes open but I'm a lot less 'trigger happy'!
