I don't think there's to much trolling on this forum. People sometimes get a bit of stick when they're a new member and treat it like a fee free eBay....There's plenty there for interested parties so good luck with the auction.

Dont get me wrong, made plenty buys and sells on here with great people who wanted the items. And not had one problem deal on here. But i get sick to death of people trying to rip things out from good people only to sell them for profit. So to me, id rather not bother with the hastle and put things to auction. Assuming its not instant funds desperatly needed, then its kinda worth the hastle. Just my take on it these days though.

But if you put things up for sale here you would know what i mean. Try selling something, youll get a ton of people telling you you dont know the market and that your way over priced. And that they know far more about the artists prices than you do. There are plenty of chancers on here that make it a massive ball ache and a pain in the arse. I have never created a sales thread on here but have sold a few items by responding to Want To Buy / looking for threads and some of them have been torture. When you think you are doing someone a favour by selling them something they are looking for at a price that is fair to both parties you still get torn to shreds.

Let's for a second assume that every person who places bids on these pieces is knowledgeable to the market value of the pieces he/she is bidding on. Wouldn't those people only bid the fair market value of each minus 25% as they know they have to pay that 25% premium on top of whatever the piece sells for? GET IT?? Unless everyone who bids on this work has just won the lottery and doesn't care about money the pieces will sell for approx 25% less than their market value. It's not guaranteed, but this probably means the seller will receive 25% less than these piecesarextruly worth plus any percentage of the actual sale he has to pay to the auction house. If he is lucky they are only taking the extra 25% being taken on top of the sale that is charged to the buyer but it is likely the auction house is also taking a percentage of the sale. I would argue that the seller would have done much better selling on the Forum for free or eBay for 3%. Just my opinion. Side note; after I canceled my registration after reading about the 25% fee, I started receiving emails and calls from the auction house 5 minutes later. I truly wish the seller good luck but that's not a good sign of a good auction house.

He has 100 pieces with them, he wont be paying commission i shouldnt think. Then add in the time to deal with all the emails from 100 sales here, and the time just makes it a nightmare. Just how it is. Might take an hour to do a deal on one piece, might take a week on another, buyer may leave it on hold and then dissapear, tons of price negotiation emails, packing and sending. Its a hell of a lot of work he will not have to get involved in apart from in bulk to get it to the auction house. And then theres the possibility of 2 people go weird over one of your pieces and setting a new high, not going to be that likely to happen on here! |

He has 100 pieces with them, he wont be paying commission i shouldnt think. Then add in the time to deal with all the emails from 100 sales here, and the time just makes it a nightmare. Just how it is. Might take an hour to do a deal on one piece, might take a week on another, buyer may leave it on hold and then dissapear, tons of price negotiation emails, packing and sending. Its a hell of a lot of work he will not have to get involved in apart from in bulk to get it to the auction house. And then theres the possibility of 2 people go weird over one of your pieces and setting a new high, not going to be that likely to happen on here!ย Rich people problems. Man oh man. Haha Hard work to sell art on a forum. As to the comment about people posting and everyone telling them their prices are wrong. Isn't it usually the truth? Haha |

I think maybe you are missing the point. Let's for a second assume that every person who places bids on these pieces is knowledgeable to the market value of the pieces he/she is bidding on. Wouldn't those people only bid the fair market value of each minus 25% as they know they have to pay that 25% premium on top of whatever the piece sells for? GET IT?? Unless everyone who bids on this work has just won the lottery and doesn't care about money the pieces will sell for approx 25% less than their market value. It's not guaranteed, but this probably means the seller will receive 25% less than these piecesarextruly worth plus any percentage of the actual sale he has to pay to the auction house. If he is lucky they are only taking the extra 25% being taken on top of the sale that is charged to the buyer but it is likely the auction house is also taking a percentage of the sale. I would argue that the seller would have done much better selling on the Forum for free or eBay for 3%. Just my opinion. Side note; after I canceled my registration after reading about the 25% fee, I started receiving emails and calls from the auction house 5 minutes later. What does "doesn't really work like that in reality" mean?? It's a FACT that the auction house is going to charge each buyer 25% more than the closing bid. It's also a FACT that anyone buying from the auction will factor this 25% charge into their bids unless of course the buyer falls into that "I'm too rich to care" category but we all know that's highly unlikely. I would generally speaking agree with your blanket statement of auctions fetching higher prices, but I think you are referring to the Christie's and Sotheby's auction houses of the world and a few others. I'm not sure Juliens falls into this category...actually I am sure they DONT fall into that category. It's also highly likely that they are going to take a percentage of the overall sale if you do your research on them.

I do agree it seems that way at times, but I also think the Forum still has a great core of like minded people that have great conversation and sales threads. Everyone is looking for a deal which makes it tough to sell at times, but I think most everything listed with a fair price sells eventually. It baffles me a little when people list things at 2-3 times their market value and then get pissed or bitter when they don't sell. Funny post by the guy about "first world problems" as I totally agree and personally I would rather deal with a few tire kickers/time wasters rather than take a 25% + hit on selling my entire collection but that's just me/my opinion.
