Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by nobokov on Jul 6, 2018 15:17:45 GMT 1, I'm surprised this hasn't been discussed before or maybe it was, and was titled, "Art Police: what's it good for?" Or more subtly "Gettin' a divorce, Selling my Pejac."
Another thread made me think of this subject. How many of you ask for input from your wives or husband's, sig others, police commissioners? If you do, to what extent and does it depend on the dollar value or whether you have plans of hanging it in an area other than your man-cave/crawlspace lair? Do you ever wish that the deliveryman would sometimes not ring the doorbell, so that you can quietly open the door and tiptoe your package to your storage shed?

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by Deleted on Jul 6, 2018 15:23:09 GMT 1, Mancave = mine, she has zero say in what I hang there. Shared spaces: She can veto stuff she really doesnt like but it's still all stuff I suggested.
Dollar value is not an issue as I buy stuff with my own money and not shared money. That seems to be like the golden rule: don't use money from a shared account for art. Spend what you make yourself (and can miss) so she can't complain about overspending.

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by Gurn on Jul 6, 2018 15:31:44 GMT 1, All purchases I make are with my own money. I do have walls in the house that are mine to cover as I please. My wife does have some input in what I purchase, though there have been times when I just 'bit the bullet'. She also does the same and has her areas in the house for her pieces..It works well for us, and we have completely different tastes. I purchased a Tracey Emin piece around 10 years ago and she hated it. However, over the decade she has come to love it. It now resides above the head of our bed and she won't let me sell it!

3. Say you sold a print and now it is being returned to you
4. Say Wow, this great artist sent us a gift print, what do you think.
5. Say DON'T Fuken MESS WITH ME ABOUT MY BLOODY ART

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by sircoxson on Jul 6, 2018 16:35:20 GMT 1, some great strategies already!
my wife usually lets me do my thang.
rule #1 for me: never disclose the full buying price.

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by wrigs on Jul 6, 2018 16:56:50 GMT 1, Massive bone of contention in our household. Sheโs really not on board with my new hobby and has attempted to veto any new purchases without her permission as apparently they are โher walls as wellโ ๐ Have attempted the deliver at a certain time however caught out last time round when I got home and she had decided to work from home with her stood next to a bloody great tube with her best unhappy face on. Did manage to get one through un-noticed however I let slip at a meal out when lost out at a live auction whilst out that I could put this up now forgetting I hadnโt mentioned it which went down really well. In short itโs a long running battle which Iโm destined to lose but keep pushing my luck (and lying about the cost even though my cash). Ironically she now loves the Beejoir Imodium 70 and Jago so happy days!

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by soupy on Jul 6, 2018 17:06:04 GMT 1, she gets my hobby... and is supportive for the most part. she likes the majority of the stuff that i buy and/or like. she has no problem giving a thumbs down on stuff she doesn't like and i usually get where she is coming from. as with most SOs/wives, she is consistently NOT a fan of Dface (which i get to some degree). typically i don't get her input prior to purchase unless i, myself, are on the fence. she is usually a good gauge of whether it is a good buy or if it is just impulse / consumerism. i like having that objective input away from the hype of the artist or release or whatever.
i have pretty much free reign on wall hanging, but always get her input. would hate to live with someone who doesn't like the same stuff or at least appreciate it. money isn't an issue as it is my money and my hobby. although i have had to sell off some stuff here and there for life funds.

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by shinkaiser on Jul 6, 2018 17:18:00 GMT 1, I buy art with all my own money and get my other half's opinion on pieces that may be questionable up on a wall in a house with kids (images of violence and nudity for example) If she has a good point on why I shouldn't buy it, I don't buy it. I generally wouldn't want to get a piece that she doesn't like and has to look at everyday.
Some pieces I've bought straight out without consulting her as I feel they look good regardless of what she thinks. Then there's a few pieces of comicart which I also collect which I put up in my 'mancave'
I've realised it goes both ways though, my over half really liked the JR print Ladj Ly but I was reluctant to put up anything that resembles someone holding a loaded gun up on our walls.

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by shinkaiser on Jul 6, 2018 17:24:44 GMT 1, Actually to add to this, one time a particular artist released a range of prints in the Saatchi Gallery and I was intent on buying one. I went along with my other half to the collectors preview and let her choose the piece that I was going to buy, we had just bought a new home and it woukld be the first piece on our walls . There were other prints that I liked maybe more than the one she chose but the one she did choose was a good one and gave us a story to tell our guests... ...that and she got to see the types of people this hobby attracts in the collectors preview!

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by Deleted on Jul 6, 2018 17:28:50 GMT 1, Whoa.....
I am seriously curious. I am guessing you're not married?
I have never had my own money, its our money. we spend it on what we want
I dont think I could do 'my own money' . where do people get their own money from? How does it become your own money?
I just buy the bits and she nods knowingly. she buys all her stuff that always costs about ยฃ20 and i nod knowingly.
we ignore bank statements as thats the best way to keep a relationship
Whoa.....

My money is the money I earn, from work or other means.
Her money is the money she earns etc.
We have a joint account for shopping, bills, mortgage etc everything that we spend together, this is our money.
She doesn't get a say on what I spend my money on and vice versa. We're not married but have been together for 10 years with one kid and another on the way. If we did marry, this model would remain the same.

There's no right or wrong way as long as you are both fine with it right?
We both just put a portion of our income on our shared account which we use for shared expenses, and we use our own money to buy things for our own (like handbags for her, art for me).
That way she can spend $500 on clothes where i'm like, eh..do you really need that? And I can spend $600 on two plush kaws dolls where she's like..wtf it's a doll.
Also this would definitely not change if we were to get married (together for 12+ years now). It would be a source of a lot of unnecessary fights if we just put all of our money together and used it at will.

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by qest on Jul 6, 2018 17:49:32 GMT 1, It's "our" money in my (our) house too. I get my wife's reaction to both the piece and the cost, unless it's nominal. I'd rather hash it out on the front end and am typically satisfied with the outcome, even in the rare event of a veto. I find it helps keep me in check.
When I left open my spreadsheet that tracks pieces and aggregates costs, all I got was a brief mocking. If I had tried to hide the expense, it could've been ugly.

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by k2 on Jul 6, 2018 17:53:11 GMT 1, Whoa..... I am seriously curious. I am guessing you're not married? I have never had my own money, its our money. we spend it on what we want I dont think I could do 'my own money' . where do people get their own money from? How does it become your own money? I just buy the bits and she nods knowingly. she buys all her stuff that always costs about ยฃ20 and i nod knowingly. we ignore bank statements as thats the best way to keep a relationship Same in our house, it's all 'our' money - I do have friends and family who have the personal account / shared account thing, but it also seems a bit strange to me.
I do cringe when my wife sheepishly shows me something she's bought for ยฃ6 after waiting for 3 months for it to be on sale. Meanwhile I'm nervously waiting for the doorbell to ring with another delivery, hoping she goes out before it arrives.
She's probably on a bingo forum right now, confessing that she gambles away all our money, thankful that I'm too distracted looking at my funny pictures to have noticed.

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by Criminal Mischief on Jul 6, 2018 17:55:24 GMT 1, My last relationship was long-distance. After the first few months I started to spend my money on art rather than flights. Now I have no wall spaceโor girlfriend.

Buying art Does anyone solicit input from your sig others?, by butterknife on Jul 6, 2018 17:57:50 GMT 1, It is much easier to obtain one quality piece of art per year than several smaller impulses. My partner shares my enthusiasm, taste and self control.
