Bargain (if you like lame taxidermy gone wrong), by loucastel on Dec 23, 2008 21:44:05 GMT 1, Nice title change, but if you are going to do it properly, shouldnt it be "expensive taxidermy gone wrong"
In all seriousness, I have never understood the appeal of her work, with all the dead birds etc, even though I know she has quite a following, I would be interested to hear what it is about this sort of work that appeals to you Afroken,

Bargain (if you like lame taxidermy gone wrong), by afroken on Dec 23, 2008 21:56:24 GMT 1, Why do I like it? Because she's taken a fairly distasteful Victorian tradition and made it beautiful and contemporary. Tradition dictates that stuffed animals aren't supposed to be displayed in peaceful and romantic poses. Her work doesn't make a huge statement about making dead animals look alive, but rather respects the animal's pose in peaceful death. I also really like all the Edgar Allan Poe references in her work.
I can see two of her pieces from where I am sitting now and after two years they still give me immense pleasure.
I'm also a bit morbid and they remind me of classic 80's 4AD album artwork by Vaughan Oliver.

perhaps if she adopted a simple single layer stencil background to her work and gave it some pseudo political twist she would win more favor around these parts
x

Bargain (if you like lame taxidermy gone wrong), by Karl Read on Dec 23, 2008 22:04:12 GMT 1, To me the idea is simply boring, it´s obvious that the artist wanna chock with this piece but it has been seen so many times, and personally I just find it disgusting.
Could'nt agree more.

i take it that means you haven't seen polly morgans work on this forum, therefore you don't have a clue who she is, and no idea about the delicate beauty of her work when seen in real life.
if i had £1k spare i would have one like a shot. Very keenly priced for a Morgan piece.

- the work itself i find peaceful, reflective and makes me consider the fragility and fleeting nature of life.
- the price; because usually it would take at least five times as much to buy a one-off piece.
so, again, why is it disgusting?

By all means, I don´t see the difference whether I´ve seen her work before or not, I have always found taxidermy animals disgusting, her putting it in a machstickbox surrounded by glass doesn´t change that.
I´ve seen several similar artists here in the city where I live and I have always felt the same, bored as hell.
It´s fascination with death, been going on since the beginning of time.

origo, i find Morgans work not morbid in the least. It sounds more like you have some kind of phobia of taxidermy!
i am at a loss as to why you think it is "boring as hell" but there you go.

this piece was from Lazarides wasn't it? I'm sure i saw it there in early '06. Do you turn the light on often? I think i would be concerned at blowing one of the bulbs!

Bargain (if you like lame taxidermy gone wrong), by loucastel on Dec 23, 2008 22:35:04 GMT 1, Why do I like it?
Interesting points, dont know about the "distasteful victorian tradition" taxidermy in itself is considered an artform, if done well and with respect to the animal, this just seems to be a modern take on the subject, sort of stage managed death in a display setting and called art, not so sure about the "peaceful and romantic" bit, dont think any death potrayed as art can really be called romantic, unless it is Romeo and Juliet. Enjoy the works you have, was interested to hear why people collected her work, cheers

I don´t know, just think when something dies it should be buried.
I am having a hard time seeing the genius here, this fascination with death has been done so many times before, leaves me totally numb hence the boring tag.
But as afroken said earlier in the thread, to each his own.
Now, go buy a dead animal in a jar.

Difficult to photo as it's so tall.
The bird is one of her more seminal works, and translates better into a photo, but this the one that always gets people when they see it up close.
