BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by snausages on Nov 21, 2008 20:08:39 GMT 1, Nice post Snausages, think the Karma is working. I'd give you a +1 but can't. Just negged someone because I was sure their avatar was looking at my wife. LOL, whatever, I guess some people in this world get their rocks off by negging people they don't like or something. (or who looks at their wife funny) It's all good, takes all kinds.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by robotoil on Nov 22, 2008 2:45:14 GMT 1, Let me state this up front lest any of you call foul. I did not get a NOLA.
POWs check out system is rife with problems. Without revealing exactly how it is done. I ask, has anyone ever had a print in their 20 minute cart only to find that it went missing? Guess what. Someone stole your print. After this happened to me two times, I engineered how this was done and contacted POW to help them resolve this issue. I never heard back from them. If someone wanted.... A lottery might not be such a bad way to go considering POW could give a rat's ass about the the integrity of their cart system.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by wildbill on Nov 22, 2008 5:58:44 GMT 1, I liked this release, would prefer to sit refreshing for 2 hours than for a full month like Trolleys. For me,giving notice on the day of release is the way to go.
So True!!!

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by jam on Nov 22, 2008 6:16:26 GMT 1, WildBill... geez you're avatar makes it tough to concentrate! ;D
My opinion is that POW should sell lottery tickets for a fiver each (as many as you'd like to buy and as many as they can sell) and put all the revenue aside for charity... then randomly select ticket numbers and send out invoices. It could raise loads for charity, and at least if flippers did get a hold of prints, some good would still come from the sale.
I'd also like to see more efforts put in place to blacklist people that are known flippers. If you get a print and sell within the first 6 months, you're blacklisted if you're caught. For example, they could offer free upcoming lotto tickets or something to anyone who buys a recently released Banksy and provides the name of the flipper to POW.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by Grubster on Nov 22, 2008 8:00:33 GMT 1, I really hope some1 from POW & LAZ get a chance to read this thread and actually give a sh*t. I'm crossing my fingers cause FairQ is the way to go IMO and it's obv so many others that still haven't been able to snag a Mr.B release. look at the lineup.. There are quality, respectable forum members who actually collect art don't get the chance to own 1 at cost! just leaves a bitter taste in your mouth

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by kennas on Nov 22, 2008 9:52:40 GMT 1, My tuppence worth.... Looking at another NOLA thread, it appears at least 36 people on here did manage to bag one. Would that number be more or less with a lottery? In my opinion significantly less, not a desireable outcome. Also who says that a lottery would be any less open to malpractice! I think the status quo seems to work OK, granted though far from ideal!
Full disclousure- I did manage to bag a NOLA using nothing other than 2 laptops, one running IE and the other on mozilla. Constant refreshing on both, managed to get one on the IE machine. By the time the mozilla one refreshed, literally less than 2 seconds later all gone. I got a pretty low number one (in the 60s). Gives an idea of the window these were available for.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by howler on Nov 22, 2008 10:18:10 GMT 1, How about a print for the fans.. only people who have posted over 100 posts on the banksy forum are eligible and base the run size on who here wants one. Also each assigned print gets marked with the individuals forum username so we all know who has flipped their print.
I hope that's just a wind up mate. I was a fan of Banksy long before I found this place, then I was a still a fan while I lurked and still a fan before I wrote any posts. Oddly though it was Adam Neate that finally got me posting (I know go figure ) I have though read a number of posts on here that basically say Banksys crap, graffiti's wrong and taggers (which Banksy is guilty of being) are scum, are these the real fans ? does someone who doesn't even like the man deserve a chance over someone who's followed him for years ?
The other week I was really up for the Adam Neate thing and found myself checking in here for all the latest goss, I must have banged on about it so much to my mates that one of them got quite into the whole thing and decided to sign up here and get with it but she can't as there's no option to sign up for this forum any more. She's been into Banksy a while why shouldn't she get a chance like everyone else ? because for now it seems you're proposing only selling to a small selected group which IMO would seem to be as unfair as possible. If P.O.W. want to take this route of having a buyers list then I suppose that's their prerogative but surely not the right of a private internet site, that just smacks of elitism to me which is not something I'd associate with Banksy.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by veralynn on Nov 22, 2008 10:47:09 GMT 1, As long as Banksy's prints keep selling out instantly and the secondary market continues to create instantaneous astronomical upcharging, why would Banksy want to change anything? Like Nigo with BAPE, Banksy's allure as an artist thrives on the carefully manipulated idea of limited availability. This is a deliberate and precise marketing maneuver integral to maintaining his desirability as an investment. Agree with this - there's no such thing as bad publicity, sell each of these for ยฃ1K more each and Banksy/POW generate an extra ยฃ289K which they don't need, much more revenue will be generated long term by the advertising/notoriety etc.
As an aside, this thread seems to be littered with people having a dig at POW which is a bit odd and contrary to my limited dealings with them - they are well run with friendly staff who helped out massively when I had a problem, as for the comments about them taking the phone off the hook - what would you do?
And no, I didn't get one either but congrats to every one that did and I hope you enjoy it!

POW's philosophy was to make art available to people other than just the rich and gangsters. If people are using expensive scripts to get ahead of the game then this philosophy is dead. IMO Mr B did not set out to line the pockets of flippers and so POW should be concerned to ensure that no advantage is gained by buyers using scipts, more broadband capability and better computers (or whatever). Fairq illiminates these advantages. And before anyone comes up with it, I do not work for fairq.
The truth is that POW do a great job. They give us an opportunity to buy work we love. I wouldn't mind betting that some of the Nola prints that came up on Friday may have even been back in the mix after some dodgy buying came to light. However, their current system for selling appears to be increasingly at the mercy of people who are able to take advantage of IT developments.
I hope that this is not the case but if it is then IMHO something needs to change.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by tickz on Nov 22, 2008 11:47:25 GMT 1, There is talk of script running, hacking running different browsers etc but let me tell you that I received the e mail on my phone and rang my mother to keep an eye on it for me until I got home from work, she is 60,computer illiterate, she was running xp on a 5 year old laptop with IE,the machine is full of spyware and slow as hell, she was bored and disinterested, sat there f5ing on page 1,and she bagged one for me. Maybe there are people running scripts, hacking etc,but I think it could just be luck and when your page refreshes (this is a kind of lottery anyway). What ever system is used there will always be a bunfight!

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by disorganisation on Nov 22, 2008 12:23:35 GMT 1, Let me state this up front lest any of you call foul. If someone wanted, they could throw all prints out of your carts until they had one safely checked out. A lottery might not be such a bad way to go considering POW could give a rat's ass about the the integrity of their cart system.
I would like to know how this happens as I managed to get a Banksy Nola, i filled out my details, then after about 30 seconds to 1 minute pressed proceed to check out, I was greeted with some sort of error message, I tried and tried again only to find out my print must have disappeared from my basket.
I had an order number, print number sent Dora the copied page in an email but she said she had no record of such order and could not do anything, I was so gutted. I sat there going blind for 4-5 hours only to get one then get completely knocked, this has happened to me once before back at the start of the year with another print.
If there is a way of nicking it out of someone else's basket surely that needs to be corrected.
I am not knocking POW at all, I nearly had a great print for a great price, I can no way afford one on the secondary market and I was grateful for being in with a chance, but I sat there with my s**t internet and managed to bag one only to be completely knocked, life is sometimes cruel and filled with poo!!
Thanks for listening to my sob story/moan
P.S.
if you get an order number, where do they go and why do POW have no record of such number?

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by mcster on Nov 22, 2008 12:58:20 GMT 1, Totally up for some kind of lottery system myself, mainly because there's no other way I am ever going to bag another Banksy release, unless by some miracle I happen to switch to it the second it comes up (I can't access hotmail or the forum from work, so get no warning).
If I lose out in a lottery system then fair enough, I can live with that. What I can't deal with, is knowing that with the current system many of us fans are losing out to people that have no interest in Banksy other than how much profit they are making. Nola isn't my favourite recent Banksy, and I think the hanging klansman would have made a better statement considering Banksy's US trip and the election result, but I would still have liked one to add to my collection.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by arcam on Nov 22, 2008 13:28:45 GMT 1, BONGO KNWS ABOUT THE SCRIPTS THAT ARE BEING USED There are no scripts being used, it's impossible.
All you've got is thousands going for a few hundred prints. A simple laws of averages will tell you most will miss out. There is no need for the horror that is FairQ, the prints sold out in seconds. The only refreshing that was done was in trying not to miss the drop. And even then they gave us notice on the day. I've said it before and I'll say it again, POW couldn't have released these prints any better.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by They call me Stephen on Nov 22, 2008 13:36:35 GMT 1, i have to agree with arcam. even though i missed out i can't see how they could improve the system unless they put banksy prints up on a new page and not under the banksy sub heading so to stop the people using programs to help them obtain one.
if a fair q system was used imagine the number of emails that would register interest! I know i would get all of my family and my girlfriends to register for me if not more people just so to have a chance. imagine the lenghts some flippers would go to and they'd probably manage to buy multiples!

Of course there are scripts, don't be so naive. I've been sent one in the past, but am too thick to know how to install and use it. But they do exist.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by gbh on Nov 22, 2008 14:37:38 GMT 1, they could do with using captcha to weed out the automation which is alleged to be taking place. they may be using asp on a wintel box after jettisoning apache & php a while back. using captcha would help - i'd venture to suggest.
they are hosted on a windows machine/asp
captcha is a waste of time (if you can be arsed to go around it) - arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080415-gone-in-60-seconds-spambot-cracks-livehotmail-captcha.html (there are many more examples)
BONGO SPEAK MIGHTY TRUTH - script is very easily possible if you have the skillset and can be arsed (note key point here)
I was refreshing like a bitch and did not get a NOLA 8+(
if you are not on the site at release, you will not get one (unless your script does for you) . If you do, it is a random act of the universe and ONLY THEN SHOULD YOU CONSIDER LOTTERY (i.e. go buy a ticket)
In my selfish point of view - FAIRQ blows goat Through insane perseverance I have scored several prints through POW releases over the years. That was down to me f5ing with my eyeballs hanging down to the desk (Sydney is GMT +10). My success rate with FAIRQ is FAIRLYFUCKALL
they could do with using captcha to weed out the automation which is alleged to be taking place. they may be using asp on a wintel box after jettisoning apache & php a while back. using captcha would help - i'd venture to suggest. they are hosted on a windows machine/asp captcha is a waste of time (if you can be arsed to go around it) - arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080415-gone-in-60-seconds-spambot-cracks-livehotmail-captcha.html (there are many more examples) BONGO SPEAK MIGHTY TRUTH - script is very easily possible if you have the skillset and can be arsed (note key point here) I was refreshing like a bitch and did not get a NOLA 8+( if you are not on the site at release, you will not get one (unless your script does for you) . BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by gbh on Nov 22, 2008 14:39:04 GMT 1, Of course there are scripts, don't be so naive. I've been sent one in the past, but am too thick to know how to install and use it. But they do exist. I am sorry I am not being naive, I know a thing or two about IT and this whole script business is a myth.
(with all due respect) might be time for some re training then .....

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by mammal2 on Nov 22, 2008 14:41:51 GMT 1, I think these scripts do exist, but I think mainly it is down to 30,000 people trying to buy 289 prints. Its a bitch for sure, but I like the thrill of seeing the add to basket button. Its my rock and roll.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by sm on Nov 22, 2008 14:49:57 GMT 1, lottery works best for me. If a print goes on sale during office hours I have fuck all chance of getting one, I can't sit around f5'ing during the day. I didn't even know about this release till it was over, I usually get POW emails but nothing this time. FAIRQ or just do what Adam Neate did last weekend, I didn't get one of those either but at least I had fun and felt like I had a chance.

But Iโm not convinced thatโs the problem here.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by Heavyconsumer on Nov 22, 2008 14:56:33 GMT 1, I can assure you that no one is using scripts to buy this print. (Ok I can't 100% assure you but if anyone s using anything like that I'm sure it's an extremely small percentage.) It's the third Banksy I bought from POW and I don't use any scripts. I get the email warnings in advance just like almost everyone else and refreshed my ass off for about 3 hours and got lucky. If you think your chance of getting a Banksy from POW is slim now, wait till they get a lottery system and your chance will (I think I'm being realistic here) ...will be about 1 in five to ten thousand or so as the amount of people that signed up would probably be horrific because of banksys notoriety especially in the UK. As it is your chance is probably about 1 in 100, assuming that there were probably about 1 to 2 or 3 thousand hardcore fans gunning for it yesterday morning. The other problem is that Nola sold so quick, you do not have time to buy multiple prints. Get a lottery system going and you'll have one person registering with 5-10 different accounts using friends and relatives addresses. And realistically I don't think POW could be arsed to spend the extra time and manpower to work all that out when they have a website that for the most part worked yesterday. Careful what you wish for. good points, well made. Had'nt thought about it in terms of those numbers before but you are, i suspect, right. I have bagged 3 out of the last 4 Banksy prints but misssed out yesterday. I suspect with a lottery system that number would be 0. I have always lost out on Faile FairQ stuff but apart from yesterday have always done ok in the bunfights so in this way you are correct. Its simple: Not getting a print when you are a real collector is a bitter pill to swallow. I agree with the sentiment of Bongo and everyone here but the bottom line is this: its a crapshoot guys, you pays your money you takes your chances........there is no fairer way for POW to do things that they way the currently do them. HOWEVER.... On the flip side of this argument there are other things that could be done to help things. A large edition print run/open edition/something similar could help ease all this pent up purchasing demand and ease the pain. It would also help lots of people who are genuine fans who have no Banksy for their walls. I also think that staged drops of prints and the use of some sort of security code entry on the details page would help POW not get bombed out by software users who I suspect count for a small number of purchases and give people more than 1 shot at picking up a print. Failing that we can call remember 1 thing: Banksy gave us Cans this year, we all benefited from that, and nothing can be fairer for us surely?
I especially agree with what Snausages had to say (great post sir), except it could well be many more people after these releases than that estimate. POW can only deliver the prints to market. Imo they do better than anyone else has done so far and remember, there were probably 100 times as many people gunning for Nola than have ever tried for a Walker, Dface or Keyes release (just picked them as other popular examples, could have entered any name there).
They will never please everyone because there will never be enough supply to satisfy demand, but that doesn't mean that these arguments about geeks and flippers have any real baring on your chances of getting a print. The odds are simply astronomical!
