BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by robotoil on Nov 22, 2008 15:09:27 GMT 1, Of course there are scripts, don't be so naive. I've been sent one in the past, but am too thick to know how to install and use it. But they do exist. I am sorry I am not being naive, I know a thing or two about IT and this whole script business is a myth.
arcam,
....edited to remove any ideas.I am 100% certain of this having written the script to test my theory. Being in IT for 20 years as I have is not a prerequisite for figuring it out. If I was mildly entertained enough to want to figure this out, I believe others probably have gone ahead with running with it.
What stops me from acting on my normal impulsive desire to run this script? My wife is a lawyer and has advised me against acting on my base impulses in what could easily be considered a crime. A Banksy print at that cost just isn't worth the hassle of litigation to me.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by leumasdarnley on Nov 22, 2008 16:29:39 GMT 1, I'm sure this has been brought up but everyone is aware there was only 289 prints right. So add up the lurkers the forum members other art collector/flippers from other forums watching POW and amazing it sells out in seconds. POW has no one to blame for these script rumors than themselves hire a good tech consultant and use a cart based on flash or java. Is it that amazing that when given a chance to make thousands on a Banksy release that people find away to do it. I have heard for months how you can't do that with POW and they monitor traffic well I say Bulls**t.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by Gentle Mental on Nov 22, 2008 17:25:14 GMT 1, Could someone explain to me what is legally wrong with using scripts? these script guys did pay for the prints with genuine credit cards, yes?
it's like saying it's wrong to use the calculator to add because that's just too fast, you should use only your fingers.
So out with it already! For the sake of making this a fair game for all - Let everyone have the scripts!

I would not say that it is wrong to use scripts. I would say, there are some scripts that are OK and some that are not.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by snausages on Nov 22, 2008 19:18:22 GMT 1, I think these scripts do exist, but I think mainly it is down to 30,000 people trying to buy 289 prints. Its a b**ch for sure, but I like the thrill of seeing the add to basket button. Its my rock and roll. They exist in other areas i.e Ticketmaster have been a target. But Iโm not convinced thatโs the problem here. I agree, let's just consider that the last Banksy print went on sale about 11 months ago. And let's wonder how fruitful it would be for anyone to spend hours and hours developing this software that they might get to use once a year if they're lucky enough to get the email in time and set up their fancy scripts. It seems highly implausible. The company that developed software to use on ticketmaster charges a whole lot of money if you want to buy that software. About as much as you'd make in profit from the print. It's just not worth it when lots of people were still able to get the print without scripts. I think this myth just naturally come up every time people get disappointed.
Here's some other problem with scripts. 1. when I clicked the add to cart button it took a good 20-30 seconds to load the next page and get the print into my cart, having script software wouldn't speed that up. 2. People who buy scalped tickets don't report the tickets to ticketmaster. People who buy Banksy prints email POW with their numbers to verify them so they know which prints were flipped and those people will probably be banned. You'd need countless identities to keep doing this unlike ticket scalpers. 3. Using scripts you'd also need to buy each print on a different ISP, if you're trying to buy multiples, which isn't impossible to do and I'm sure scripts could be written to do that but it's another major step in the process making it all so convoluted and can't imagine anyone writings software so complicated when they might have 1 chance a year to use it just to make about 1-2 grand. Big deal.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by Gentle Mental on Nov 22, 2008 19:22:34 GMT 1, what makes a script not OK? it's odd to me that people are placing morals and values on technology and tools. they are just tools - some have them, others don't. those who don't - lose out!
A script helps you get to cashier faster. it's like a store with lots of people shopping. I don't think using a script mean you've cut queue, it just means you've found a shorter and faster queue.
NOW, professional touts have them - it's bloody obvious - some of the online "GALLERIES" on ebay have ALL the good stuff - i'm sure there are more than a dozen online galleries out there with half of everything POW produces, and they're offloading a bit by a bit - long as they can sell a couple of pounds above cost, they'll cruise along just fine...
Now, if we don't do scripts, we will forever be at the disadvantage - those who scored the NOLA might disagree, but please, do consider how you'd feel, if you'd missed it after 10 hours of trying, and the truth is, it's because you didn't install the right software. I'll tell you how it feels, it feels like being abused and then blackmailed. it feels like you've queued 2 nights for a concert ticket, and finally realised it's been sold out, and now you have to pay some stinking tout with a clever script 10 times that money just to see the band you love.
it feels like shit.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by snausages on Nov 22, 2008 19:27:20 GMT 1, except it could well be many more people after these releases than that estimate. Thanks HC and I'm really curious myself, and just a guess but was also assuming that a lot of people that might gun for the print were out or unaware or in meetings or sleeping or working etc. I think there were about 450 to 500 people online at the Banksy forum during the drop, (I know there would be a lot more than that overall) but using that as a guide too. You'd have to have the POW tech guru figure out how many unique IP addresses hit the site that morning. Anyone know POWs tech guy?

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by robotoil on Nov 22, 2008 20:13:42 GMT 1, what makes a script not OK?
A script that intentionally interferes with someone elses buying experience with the intent of denying them product. That would be an instance of when a script is not OK.
A script that merely helps you check out faster would be OK in my book.

Yes I think that is what came up when i pressed proceed to payment, it was on a white screen. If that is the case that is so out of order, I thought that maybe it was some sort of mistake or error because so many people where trying to buy it, but to find out someone nicked my print, what a bitter taste...

Yes. White screen.
Is this the type of error message you received? Some text omitted to deny the script kiddies a leg up. ------------------------------------------------------------------- ADODB.Field error '800a0bcd' Either BOF or EOF is True, or the ###### ####### ### #### #####. Requested operation requires # ####### ######. -------------------------------------------------------------------- If that is the message you received, then your print has been nicked.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by tommyboy on Nov 22, 2008 21:28:53 GMT 1, is this not the error message you get when you click buy button and there are none in stock,
i dont think it has anything to do with nicking out of others cart
i got this message after clicking on the buy button, i took it to mean that i refeshed and the buy button appeared, then inbetween the time i saw the button and i pressed it, someone else got there before me
I did lose one out my cart when they were first realeased, but this was due to the site crashing on me

Nope. This is when there are prints in stock and you get one in your cart. When you are in the 20 minute zone and the print is reserved for you.

BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by Daniel Silk on Nov 23, 2008 2:44:43 GMT 1, I have not really gone into this thread too much, but I think I just about get whats being talked about
Going by the Banksy releases over the last couple of years it really does start look like its all about who you know, and being told about back doors into the ordering system Its getting to the point now where I fully expect never to be able to get any new Banksy prints, and I dont think Im the only one. Its never gonna be easy form POW to fix this problem but the longer they leave it, the harder its gonna be to regain the trust of people believing the system is fair
