BONGO CALL FOR ACTION, by aginghippie on Nov 24, 2008 22:39:25 GMT 1, The whole script thing is overblown.
It's easy enough to write a script, I did it as an experiment and it's about 60 lines of code, but you are still unlikely to get a print even with a script. The problem is the speed of the site and the rate at which the prints sell out. I reckon the POW site was redrawing once every minute, maybe longer, and a script needs the whole page to play with. Based on BRP's comment that VA sold out in something like 6 seconds your chance of a script getting in is no better, and probably worse, than an f5er. The only advantage a script has is that if it sees a buy button it can hit it faster than you can but if you have the mouse on the right part of the screen even that advantage is minimised.
Nett result? Write a script by all means but on a slow site with a print that everyone is after it's going to be a waste of time.

My thoughts are that it should be easy enough to create a static .asp page that has the relevent details (easily obtained by looking at the fields required to purchase any print on POW) , then once the picture has been released all you would need is to gain the ID number of the print and submit the form. This would then bypass the shopping basket and take you directly to the card collection page. By looking at there source code, all the fields are readily avaliable. my two pence worth..

Could this be the reason for all the sold duplicate print numbers and prints going missing from people's baskets before payment? , if people are bypassing the basket and going straight to a payment page it seems that this is a highly plausible and worrying explanation.

Nah, it's a bug in their code. You probably don't see it normally but because of the sheer number of people hitting the system simultaneously several people get through the gate together. They should really code that bit to use locking so only one person can get through at a time. The catch is that if it breaks and leaves the lock in place nobody can get in.
Don't underestimate the power of a few thousand people hitting f5 together.

Nice try but no cigar. I'll leave it as an exercise for the reader to figure out why (although it's fairly simple)...
Also it would be trivial for POW to catch anyone who had done that.

There are a lot of things POW could do relatively easily to make life harder for people using scripts, but the bottom line is that using a script isn't going to get you very far in this game.

I've just been reading the Banksy Nola thread and I am sorry to see you lost your print Ross.
