The End of The World - NEXT WEDNESDAY , by spirit on Sept 5, 2008 13:33:51 GMT 1, What's the point of their experiment?
They are trying to discover the fundamental building blocks of the Universe in order to be able to explain why it all exists as it does.
They are essentially looking for proof of the existence of the Higgs boson, the "God" particle which is predicted to exist by the standard model of particle physics.
The Higgs boson is what is supposed to be responsible for giving matter it's mass.
They are also looking for evidence of the Graviton which is the particle which carries the force of gravity.
Well you did ask... ;D
What worries me is that it is only "almost" impossible that this experiment will create a black hole that swallows the earth. And that risk assesment is based on a lot of theory as opposed to facts. There are a lot of unknowns - If scientists knew exactly what was going to happen there would be no need to carry out the experiment.
When the risk of getting it wrong entails the destruction of the entire planet, "almost" impossible is not really good enough in my book.

Their theory always sounds to me like 'that guy over there kicked that cat and it's fine... so i can carry on kicking this one as much as i like without it exploding!' :-)

The End of The World - NEXT WEDNESDAY , by spirit on Sept 5, 2008 13:46:52 GMT 1, I'm half wondering if some alien galactic police will turn up on Tuesday and say "Humans, the machine you have just built has been banned throughout the universe for the last 10 deceons due to the fact that it can destroy everything. You may not be aware that it was against galactic law to create such a machine but that is really no excuse. The penalty for creating such a machine is immediate planetary destruction. That may sound a bit harsh but this is a very serious offense. Sorry. Goodbye. Bang.

The End of The World - NEXT WEDNESDAY , by Gentle Mental on Sept 10, 2008 14:39:22 GMT 1, Why would 20 countries pay so much for such an abstract experiment? a new kind of weapon is why.
They want that black hole. They want the world to shake and rumble.

Which coincides nicely with 2012 theory

The End of The World - NEXT WEDNESDAY , by bostonlongstroke on Sept 10, 2008 15:17:04 GMT 1, I'm wondering that if they can turn this really f@ckin' fast roller-coaster on, without any particle collisions, could I belt myself into a harnessed vessel and go for a quick jaunt at the speed of light, through/in the LHC???
If so, that'd be koo-koo-f@ckin'-bananas type crazy-awesome!!!
The mere thought of this idea, has made the crotchville area of my pants look like a big-top circus tent!
Up 'til now, the fastest I've ever been was just under 200mph on my buddies street bike. However, I'd like to try and trump that. And, I'm thinkin' the LHC can help me achieve that!
Wait a sec... Let me grab my helmet and goggles.

There's been a long talked about theory on the end of days in Dec 2012. The very old and accurate Mayan calendar, goes out only as far as Dec 2012.
Doomsday prophets have been talkin' it up about this for eons.
