BONGO ONCE AGAIN RAISE QUESTION ON BANKSYART.ORG, by BONGO on May 8, 2008 17:22:13 GMT 1, "Banksy is the most influential and well known guerrilla artist in the world and on 21 May 2007 he gained the award for Art's Greatest living Briton.
Our gallery is the only available source of his street art; carefully collected, verified and preserved.
We are part of the Banksy Reclamation Project which was established to collect his various pieces produced in Bristol and London and safeguard them.
It is estimated that 70%-85% of Banksyโs outdoor work has already been lost, owing to local authority cleaning operations or subsequent vandalism.
We have managed to appropriate several of his most famous works created since 2001 and provide them for international distribution.
We continue to collect his pieces through a network of agents and private sellers and are set to expand the collection by another 25-40 pieces by July 2009.
Bankyโs pieces command consistently high prices in high profile sales and his street art, as distributed here, is solidly positioned to increase in value as his work becomes more scarce. BBC NEWS- Contemporary Art Value Increases by 55% in One Year
A recent work of Banksy's sourced from a private wall in Notting Hill, London, fetched a bid of ยฃ208,000. Banksy Sky News
In addition Banksy's fame as an artist continues to rise as shown by the traffic volume to his website. This will correlate in increased value and a wider customer base.
On 7 February 2007, Sotheby's auction house in London auctioned three Banksy works, reaching the highest ever price for a Banksy work at auction: over ยฃ102,000 for his Bombing Middle England. Two of his other graffiti works, Balloon Girl and Bomb Hugger, sold for ยฃ37,200 and ยฃ31,200 respectively, which were well above their estimated prices. The following day's auction saw a further three Banksy works reach soaring prices. Ballerina With Action Man Parts reached ยฃ96,000; Glory sold for ยฃ72,000; Untitled (2004) sold for ยฃ33,600 - all prices being significantly above estimated values. On April 27, 2007, a new record high for the sale of Banksy's work was set with the auction of the work 'Space Girl & Bird' fetching ยฃ288,000 ($576,000), around 20 times the estimate at Bonhams of London.
We provide access to the widest available range of Banksy's street art and represent both purchasers and sellers throughout the world."

BONGO ONCE AGAIN RAISE QUESTION ON BANKSYART.ORG, by BONGO on May 8, 2008 17:36:26 GMT 1, LATER IMPROVISED AND PERMANENT IMPROVEMENTS TO A TRANSIENT PIECE OF STREET ART COULD BE INTERPRETED AS AN EXPECTED PART OF THE LIFE OF SUCH A WORK AND AS AN IDEA, SHOULD BE APPLAUDED IN MANY WAYS
STATIC ART IS DEAD ART SOME WOULD ARGUE
CREATIVE EMBELLISHMENT WOULD BE THE NEXT STAGE OF STREET ART EVOLUTION AND CONVERSLEY ENHANCE THE WORKS LIKELEYHOOD OF REMAINING IN SITU AS IT WOULD REDUCE ITS MARKETABLE VALUE FOR THESE PARASITES
TAKING CONTROL CAN HAVE MANY FACETS

BONGO ONCE AGAIN RAISE QUESTION ON BANKSYART.ORG, by G-Man on May 9, 2008 10:40:10 GMT 1, I say that embellishment is the way forward
Street art has always been transient and should remain that way
If people wanted to add their own touches to street art then that was the way it was long may it continue
If the artists wanted their art to stay the same forever they would paint on canvas and put in dusty galleries
Keep it real and if adding embellishment to the work means that some b a s t a r d cant sell it for a fortune to a rich w a n k e r then hurrah
Rant over

BONGO ONCE AGAIN RAISE QUESTION ON BANKSYART.ORG, by skylarkin on May 9, 2008 12:25:43 GMT 1, A FAVORITE OF BONGOS NOW HIDDEN UNDER A COAT OF PAINT FOR OBVIOUS REASONS IF THEY INTEND TO DEPRIVE OF SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT BELONG TO THEM, THEN IT IS OUR CHOICE TO DEPRIVE THEM THAT LUXURY OF CHOICE
So I guess that the answer is to try and change the art so that it is still accessable to view, but at the same time losses its on-sale value. Are you thinking along the lines of a large stamp such as www.nedarc.org/nedarc/analyzingData/images/stampOfApproval.gif But with 'Not for Resale' for example, these could be stamped over any art under threat? But it does raise the issue, that if they have covered the piece, then they must be quite skilled in removing single layers of paint at a time so maybe this wont be that effective. Unless an oil based paint could be used??? Removing them prior to them being stolen, kinda defeats the object. Whats ya cunning Bongo.....??

BONGO ONCE AGAIN RAISE QUESTION ON BANKSYART.ORG, by BONGO on May 9, 2008 12:48:43 GMT 1, THE PROBLEM WITH REMOVING AN EXAMPLE OF A RAT AS ABOVE IS MAINTAINING THE INTEGRITY OF THE WORK ITSELF THROUGH A POTENTIALLY DISRUPTIVE EXTRACTION PROCESS
MANY BANKSY PIECES ARE ON RENDERED WALLS THAT PROVIDE THE INTEGRITY TO MAKE REMOVAL A POSSIBILITY
BY UTILISATION OF THE TOOLS OF THE OPPORTUNITS, SAY AN ANGLE GRINDER, IT IS POSSIBLE TO DISRUPT THE STABILITY OF THE IMAGE AND ENSURE THAT THE PIECE IS UNLIKEY TO BE REMOVED INTACT OR WITHOUT SIGNIFICANT DAMAGE
MARKING THE PIECE AS BEING THUS SABOTAGED WOULD ENSURE NO ATTEMPT IS MADE FOR ITS REMOVAL. A NOT FOR REASALE TAG MAY BE APT.
BONGO HAS NOTICED THE PROLIFERATION OF RAPACIOUS PRIVATELY OWNED CASHPOINT MACHINES IN CORNERS SHOPS THAT AS WELL AS TAKING A COMMISSION FOR THE SERVICE ARE BOOBY TRAPPED TO ENSURE ATTEMPTED THEFT IS LARGELY FUTILE

BONGO ONCE AGAIN RAISE QUESTION ON BANKSYART.ORG, by BONGO on May 9, 2008 13:00:37 GMT 1, STREET ART IS NOT STATIC AND A PINK AND BLACK RAT WOULD NOT OFFEND BONGO AS MUCH AS THE RATS REMOVAL AND SUBSEQUENT SALE
AS WE CONTRIBUTED TO THE CANS FESTIVAL ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS , WE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO EXISTING WORKS, ESPECIALLY THOSES UNDER THREAT FROM RAMPANT AND COLD BLOODED COMMERICAL INTERESTS

BONGO ONCE AGAIN RAISE QUESTION ON BANKSYART.ORG, by Harveyn on May 9, 2008 13:07:23 GMT 1, What about a chemical spray that would fade the piece over a period of 2 or 3 months (accelerated aging). Something that could not be reversed. The piece could then be tagged to the side (rather than on top) stating the inevitable and unavoidable deterioration of the work. This way people could enjoy the piece in it full glory for a period of time and if some idiot choose to ignore the warning at least we could bask in the glory that they would eventually only have a blank wall to stare at.
Or we could get Banksy to work with spray paints that fade with time.
Note to self....get out more..... ;D

BONGO ONCE AGAIN RAISE QUESTION ON BANKSYART.ORG, by holden on May 9, 2008 13:09:09 GMT 1, Its clearly become a problem and I think it is good to consider solutions if you still want to see work on the streets for free as it was intended to be seen. They are most definitely going to be disappearing faster than Mr B can bang em out and I too (if I made it back to London Town) would rather see colourway rats than no rats at all
