The history makers, by mcster on Apr 16, 2008 18:57:48 GMT 1, Banksy, Blek, Faile - from a pure street perspective Parla, Neate, Micallef - from a brilliant painting perspective, I think Parla will be hailed as THE American painter of the next 20 years. But maybe we will be talking about a Bristol school and a Shoreditch school in 50 years who knows. Whatever, it's f**kin brilliant!
Agreed about how brilliant this all is; maybe the best Gallery of all will be the tatty remains of classic pieces on the street; I certainly do see the lastest Banksy piece being removed or painted over. ;D

The history makers, by otomi on Apr 16, 2008 19:03:47 GMT 1, Banksy ... Faile (did a lot - several artist copy their style now - they kinda created a sub-movement in the street art scene) Swoon (unique style - great art - a true street artist - art world loves her) Space Invader (several books - allover the world - well documented - sells well - comes up with new materials), Obey (he is just everywhere) Paul Insect (great artist - touches all kinds of topics but you can always recognise his style) Ben Eine (pumps out a lot of work - does still a lot of street art - hangs out with all the right people) sorry I'm not questioning your choices, just your reasons!... Space invader - sells well and comes up with new material? Faile created a sub-movement? you mean wannabes try and copy? Swoon - a true street artist? whats a true street artist? hope this doesn't read bad and I'm not attacking you, just curious to a little more explanation, and maybe i might learn a thing or two!
No problem - glad we are talking about art.
Space Invader - In order to get into history books you have to be well documented and he is books maps etc. Money is a fact to be remembered if noone buys/collects you people will forget because street art disappears over time. He uses tiles and rubik cubes something different than just stencils.
Swoon does a lot of street art all over the world and her shows are amazing it always feels like you are on the street/outside even if you are in a gallery. Most of her print sales are for charity and she is always supporting some good cause. There are a lot of former street artist that mostly release prints now thats why I think she is a real street artist.
Faile - Imitation is the highest form of flattery.

The history makers, by saltandiron on Apr 16, 2008 20:39:29 GMT 1, I think that when we discuss now, what may be remembered in the future, there are so many uncertainties, that encompass not only the art itself but the culture providing a context/backdrop to it, which will be remembered for many reasons/events over and above the art it offered in most cases. Today's art is a reflection of today's society, so the factors contributing to who is and isn't remembered are numerous and range far beyond the art itself. Very good point.

The history makers, by BME on Apr 17, 2008 1:13:35 GMT 1, My 2 cents worth
I think that Banksy is in a league of his own but other significant players in the movement are/ will be Faile, Dface and Eine.
Micallef, Neate and Lister all have huge futures but, will not, I suggest be as closely associated with the street art movement as time goes by.

when you say this, are you referring to Faile's 'flattering' of Mimmo Rotella and the New Realism movement?

The history makers, by daveart on Apr 17, 2008 2:28:17 GMT 1, a bit new to all of this... but have also been collecting art since before Banksy came along. so I would respectfully point out that he is not really the start of a movement.. but possibly picking up from where keith Haring, Basquait would have gone had they not met untimely deaths. add in John Matos (crash) and others...and you get more of a continuum than a clean break with a new start? I believe these artists are already well shown in museums around the world - maybe save Crash - and valuations much much higher than any of the other artists listed so far have come close to.. will be interesting to see how this plays out .. only have 30 years to wait i guess. I hope they are all successful as I own a small bit from most of the names mentioned in the thread.. and if not .. we all have good art around for the ride.
